I don't remember the Virus Attack Strategy card. I do remember that there were 4 missions in the game and each player had to pick out a Mission card that was often a different mission to the opposing player.

Think they were
1. The Assassins (Primary Objective, Kill The Enemy Army Leader)
2. Engage & Destroy (Kill as much of the opposing army that you can in the game)
3. Dawn Raid (Primary Objective, to get a unit into the enemy Deployment Zone by the end of the game)
4. -I can't remember the name of the 4th Mission, but its Primary Objective was the same as Dawn Raid if I remember rightly. Also, all the Missions, except "Engage And Destroy" had Engage & Destroy as secondary objectives.

I can't remember if I've ever posted in this thread, but I was also a 2nd edition starter. I played Chaos Marines at the time, Khornate Terminators had a 2+ save on 2d6. ;)

What I remember most about 2nd edition was my belief that non-terminator infantry were a waste of time, and that we wound up banning Cyclone Missile launchers after a friend "maxed out" a Space Wolf list with a whole bunch of them. At the time, they had something like a dozen missiles they could fire, and you could choose how many you shot each turn? Each shot increased the diameter by a certain amount, and he carpet bombed another [Eldar playing] friend off the board in a single turn. My buddy didn't even get to play, other than to pick his models off the board! Cover didn't grant a save at the time, and strength reduced saves... so with blasts not needing to roll to hit, he multi-krak-missiled everything all at once. Alpha-strike for the win!

I started with a box of Khorne Berzerkers, some Chaos Termies, as they'd just! come out with the Reaper Autocannon armed model, a Chaos Dread with the Power Scourge, and I also bought Abbadon, 'cause the model was badass. I still remember thinking how cool the Claw was on him. :D

I remember all of that, too. Including how cool the claw on Abbadon was.

I played orks. I maxed out on Warbikes and Scorchas and had a huge number of Lootas with Lascannons that would just stand around overwatching. All my bikes would aim directly for enemy units and run them over and then shoot something else. Anybody who didn't make an initiative test was flattened and the other unit would get blown apart by a dozen or so hits with autocannons that did huge amounts of damage.

Then all my bikes would die, but that's okay--they usually took out about 2-3 units with them.

Then I had Kommandos with a Vortex grenade for my enemy's big gribbly. Boom for them, boom for me.

It was completely and utterly bent and silly. My teenaged brain loved the hell out of it, though. The only thing that kept me from having a massive army was my complete lack of money.

Ding! We proxied everything... The old unit boxes were the right size for tanks. We'd tape notes to them about weapons and what they were [Rhino with Havoc Launcher!] and I used Black Orcs [One Axe up, one sword down...] for more 'Zerkers.

I think I used a River Troll for a second Dreadnaught. Man, I wish Guard had "proper" Dreads. I swear, if they come out with a Riptide / Wraithknight type model for Guard in the next codex, I'm gonna post a tactica on how to use three in a 1500 pt army without being cheesy. I'll find a way.

Rapid fire die, and being able to reroll it because the Reaper was built like a brick turd-house. Only Chaos could fire their Plasma every turn, everyone else had to "cool down" between shots. Multi-melta could get an armour pen value of 50 or something... crazy rules and I also loved the hell out of it. I was grateful in 3rd when things sped up, and the really stupid [Vortex Grenade!] rules got phased out, and replaced with different stupid rules. :)

Using green encyclopedia books for hills. Playing on a bare plywood board. Ruins made from the Styrofoam trays that models used to come in. Using empty coke cans for silos... more proxies than actual models. Playing in my parent's basement. Feeling a sense of achievement when all my models were finally primed and no longer grey plastic / pewter.

I have the biggest goofy grin right now.

I also seem to remember Flame Pistols, pistol versions of flamers and Assault Marines could take any close combat weapons that they wanted, so they could all take plasma pistols and powerfists if you wanted, or powerfist and powersword.

Also Dark Angels, Ultramarines and Blood Angels each had their own Tactical squad boxed set at the time as well, (yup, the metal ones...)
Dark Angels I remember had the sergeant with Powersword, a Plasma Gun and Lascannon,
Ultramamrines had a Sergeant with Powerfist, a Flamer and Missile Launcher
Blood Angels had a Sergeant with Chainsword, Meltagun and Heavy Bolter in their box.

Tactical Squad, Devestator Squad and Assault Squads all had to be purchased in the army list as a 10 man unit and ten broken down into 2 5 man Combat Squads if you so desired to split them up. Terminators could actually use Rhino to get around the battlefield (though it was still 1 Terminator to 2 Marines).

In the future, please use the modify button. Double posting is against the forum rules, and for that reason, the system merged your posts.

Just thought, wasn't the 4th Mission in 2nd Edition "Take & Hold", where you had to get a unit into your enemy's deployment zone and hold it until the final turn had finished, whereas, Dawn Raid you scored for getting a squad in the opposing DZ, and they had to stay for a turn, to get the scoring Victory Points, but could then leave the DZ afterwards?

It was Warhammer Online - I was extremely hyped for it more than a year before launch (2006-7...I played WoW before that) and I played it till the very last second: it was shut down forever on that sad December the 18th 2013.

I got into Warhammer 40k because a friend of mine began running a Rogue Trader game. I always liked playing more or less support roles in tabletop RPGs so I picked out the Navigator class, mainly because it seemed like someone was going to have to do it otherwise how could we run our ship? I had no idea what I was getting into.

"You mean I get a third eye that makes people go insane if they look into it? Yeah, count me in."

Trying to be a good player, I started looking up all the lore that I thought would be pertinent to a good Navigator-- The Warp, Warp Travel, Navis Nobilite, history of The Imperium etc etc. I was hooked. The fiction I am used to lately, mainly due to my profession, is a bit more (don't take this the wrong way) balanced. Reading 40k lore, however, I felt like a fourteen year old in a comic book shop again, flipping through art looking for the most "hardcore" images I could find.

"You're telling me Iron Maiden wrote the Arthurian Legend and set it in space?"
"Yeah, it's something like that."

So I followed the pattern anyone follows when they jump into a complex fictional setting with a rich history. That is, one topic leads to another, finally culminating in a browser window with at least ten tabs open at a time, all pointing to some 40k wiki article or image. It became sort of a guilty pleasure to read up on 40k history in my spare time.

Now, I run a rouge trader game myself; and I made it a group policy not to punish those players who wish to read the texts by making the game as canonical as possible without, at the same time, sacrificing player options. So far it's working fairly well and everyone is having a good time learning about the 40k universe while in their own way adding to it.

In short, more than anything, I enjoy the 40k lore. To be honest I only play Rogue Trader and have never touched the traditional model game. I have nothing against it; it's just that I enjoy the storytelling aspect of 40k much more than anything else. Thanks for reading my little spiel.

Welcome to 40K Online :).

That seems like a very enjoyable and fulfilling way to play the game to me. I'm glad that you're getting so much out of the narrative aspect of it.  It's also great to have someone more focussed on the background around here, as there haven't been so many players whose main interest is in this area in recent times.
You haunt my in-box like an ex-girl friend could only dream of.

It was Robotech P&P RPG books, the store we got them from had the new 2nd edition stuff in. The Eldar codex is what sold me on it, enjoyed the fluff around the race, the idea of grouping specialists in an army just clicked with me. Then there was the Avatar and the Phoenix Lords were all awesome.

A mate introduced me to Warhammer. He had three armies in epic. I was sooo amazed. He bought his models in another state. When I went shopping in my home town, there were only the 40K models. We thought, Ok! Glen will have the epic version and I'll have the 40K. I didn't know there were codex's back then. My first army was Eldar. My mate had several different races in Epic. So I figured I should do the same.

I didn't know that the Space Marines had different chapters.
I bought a Death Company unit, a Deathwing unit and a Long Fang unit. Didn't know they belonged to different chapters till I met another 40K gamer... Doh!

I first learned about it from an old friend and just loved the lore. After reading enough novels I got an Ork army with lots of Lootas.

Fell out for awhile after having trouble finding a local group, but have been getting back in now that I moved and found a local GW store that is good at teaching newbies and such.

Well, honestly, it was a scavenger my mom went on for one of her college courses.  She had to go to all these places and took me with her.  She got extra credit for various things at the different locations, and one of the places was a local GW store.  Her extra credit there was to acquire any miniature; being that neither of us knew what it was she just bought me one model.  So, I bought a Dragon Prince from fantasy, then the rest is history!

Having bought my first box of models at the tender age of 7 (a 5 man box of slot together 2nd ed Khorne Berzerkers) from a Virgin Megastore my older brother informed me that there "was a shop that done those kind of things" and furthermore that "he would take me there".

True to his word, the next week he took me into the local Games Workshop store on a Sunday afternoon. It was full of kids that one of the staffers was whipping into a frenzy, one side of the table shouting "Blood for the Blood God" that was then answered with a "For the Emperor!" in response from the opposite side of the table. This went back and forth for a good few minutes with the loudest side winning first turn. I picked up more models there and then and have been hooked ever since.

Welcome to the site papanurgel.

Does your friend still play? I am guessing you must be a good Painter if you play and paint Nurgle.

What made you get in to warhammer and what did you get first?
Me first my dad and the website and I got a Catachan starter army box set
now you

Had to be from the lore and painting. I love lore. It’s my favourite game element. The deeper the better. And W40k has so much of that. Plus there’s cool minis. Plus I’m a nerd

Had to be from the lore and painting.

Is it only 40k lore and figures that you read/paint, or do you read/paint some of the other Tabletop games that are out there?
