hrud background
« on: January 5, 2008, 01:32:18 AM »
I'm thinking of writing a homemade list for the hrud, and eventually collect an army based around this army list. I was wondering if anyone could give me some background for the hrud, so it'll give me some inspiration. Also, could you give me some ideas of the weapons and units that they'd field?
That would be massiely appreciated.

Start with the stickied threads in this board, and thus discover how very very little there is. Only hints about the Hrud are around, and nothing more.

Most of that is fan-facts though. Very little is official. Most of that wiki is just guesswork (at best).

Hrud can also be found in a few other Black Library publications.  One book I believe that has them is one of Gav Thorpes Last Chancer's books.  I'm pretty sure its the one when they go to the tau planet to assassinate a leader or something.  I read it a while back, so I can't remember much about it.

Also, another book that I think has Hrud in it is the first Ciaphas Cain Book For the Emperor, but I'm not to sure on that one either.

Hope this helps out your quest on writing up a Hrud army list.  Post it sometime when   you get around to finishing it.  I'd like to see what you've come up with.

Good Luck.

Thank you for all the responses.

I will be posting up the drafted, not yet playtested army list on the forge. I have been working on this for some time now, and have searched for a lot of background.

I don't have access to black library books, so I have to make up most of the stuff myself. I will be basing it around the studies of one particular warren from an Xenologist <who I still have to name> on a world <which I have still got to name as well>. The style of the finished codex and background will be in the new codeci format seen in Codex: CSM and the Orkdex.

If you know of any ways to improve my background setting, please tell me, as I read all the responses and take them seriously. I will get back to you on them as soon as possible as well.

Thanks for all the help. It really was helpful to me!

I don't know if this will help, but I have this impression that when the name first started being used in GW publications, like the BBB, they were the 40k equivalent to Skaven.  Do you have that "other xenos" image from the 3rd edition rulebook?   It has a picture of pre-Tau Kroot, "Clawed Fiend of the Donorian Sector," Tallerian Dog Soldier (I'm working on a custom list and army of them just like your Hrud project), a Hrud, etc.  Also, in the IG Codex there's a note about the 39th Cadian "Xenobane" regiment, page 31, who were involved in the "Chincare Hrud Infestation, M41," which suggests a few things to me.  The word infestation is important to me, and I think it also is an indication that the Hrud are obviously worthy adversaries.  Best of luck.

That is not correct. There was even a Hrud model from back in 1st ed. They are old, very very old. They just never got developed.

Do you know of a link to said model, Rasmus?

Maybe it was just my bad interpretations, but I always mistook them for Skaven-40k as well.

I cannot locate one now. Possibly I am mistaken and it is just some old conversion I stubled across.

Thanks for that people. I have a lot to do, but I have nearly finished typing up the army list draft. My own fluff will be made (no sources seem reliable enough to be included. Wikipedia looks okay, I might take ideas from that, and xenology definitely).

Thanks again for the responses, they've been very helpful

You know, I think the xenology book mentions somethng about a projected field to cover their appearance, and I think I remember that idea coming up in a few other places.  You may want to use that idea to avoid figuring out what the Hrud look like at all.  You could very well write the dex without ever describing them.  It would keep them all shadowy and cool, while at the same time letting the player make them look how they want for their models.  Alternate appearances could just be alternate disguises.

omg, that saves me time looking for background!!! I might just go ahead and describe the Hrud units individually rather than the whole race. I won't find much, and I can't buy Xenology due to it been online (I don't do online payments). I can take inspiration from the wikipedia website, the other books they can be found in, etc. and use that as unit background, but far from making a full-on army background

Also note a reference in Codex:Eye of Terror to Ursaker Creed having to fight off a 'Hrud Migration' - clearly an event on a large scale given that it required the involvement of someone who was one of Cadia's most senior commanders at the time.

Not blown away by the choice of purple for a skin colour but you could do a lot worse than cherrypicking some of those conversions.

thank you all for your input, Im sorry for digging up an old topic and all but I just wanted to take the time to thank you for all the reference and information you gave me.

I am working on the background at this moment and will be posting my created army list in the forge for review. Once completed I will move it here.

I will be taking all information I have been given to write my own background, making it as accurately as possible to what GW made for it waaaaaaaay back. I only started playing late 3rd edition so I dont remember them being around :P
