I hate this rule. Logical, but bloody annoying.
My Lord has the MoT and I wanted my terminator chosen to have the MoCU but NO, I'm not allowed. I had to waste 45 extra pts to give them the MoT too.

Anyways, I was thinking... could I give the Lord the MoT and the Chosen the MoCU and just let the Lord walk around with them? That way he's not joining the unit, but still has the same effect right?

your lord can walk around with them, thus not being able to be targetted when he is within 6" of them (unless he is the closest target within 12").

Good. I mean extra 45 points to upgrade the squad from MoCU to MoT? I could get another Terminator for those points. Just have to make sure I keep at least one of them in front of the Lord at all times.

You could have a separate squad of Chosen with the MoCU, and have the Tzeenthian Lord join the squad. There is nothing against that in the rules, unless you wanted to make the Chosen a Retinue.

The only real problem you face doing that is in missions that restrict the deployment of units. At that point the Lord and his "retinue" so to speak maynot show up at the same time, which could be bad for you....

That's illegal. Check p38, first paragraph second column.

It says a character with a mark cannot join a squad with another mark, unless the character has MoCU. The reverse (a mark of tzeentch joining a MoCU squad) isn't legal.

If your looking to just hide him in a unit why not throw him in with some regular 'ole rubrics?

Why don't you just give the Lord MoCU with the Sorcerer upgrade.

Or just don't give your termies a mark and make sure there not his Retinue (so they aren't forced to take the MoT), cuz it say's nothing about marked IC joining non marked units.
