Background: The Cadian 101st was formed in M40.775, by the remains of the 99th and 100th Cadian infantry, after a vicious battle on Demitus, a deserted mining planet terraformed into an Agri-world, in one of the outer systems of the Hydraphur sector in Segmentum Pacificus. An Ork fleet from the ork world Jakart had appeared almost un-noticed. A truly massive Space Hulk had warp jumped in-system. Within weeks the ork warbands numbering several hundred thousand ork in total had started their assault on the poorly defended, backwater planet. Demitus was the only Agri-world in the Sub-sector to feed the still active mining worlds surrounding it, so the Imperium had no choice but to send what forces were available in the area to deal with the attack. That task was given to the 98th, 99th and 100th Cadian regiments who at the point were en-route to Hydraphur for re-arming. One standard month after the initial distress signal was received, the Cadian battle force made planet-fall on Demitus. They had learned from orbital images that the orks had completely taken over the planet, and the only tactically applicable landing zone was behind a hundred miles worth of dense pinewoods, west of the capitol city. Intelligence had discovered the position of the Warboss uniting the ork tribes that had traveled on the Space Hulk, within the city center. After securing the drop zone, the cadians started their advance on the city. The infantry and Sentinel companies were forced to advance through the thick belt of pinewoods to the city, this was the only path not held by the Orks. Their Amoured Companies joined forces and were ordered to fight their way though the Ork lines, around the forested areas and then strike the city from the south. As a result, the three infantry regiments were left to march though the woods on foot, without armour support. This would have dire results. The Orks had not left the pine-woods unguarded, and the guardsmen soon faced fierce opposition by thousands of Ork Kommandos. These cunning Orks had littered the dense undergrowth with booby traps and had set up numerous ambushes for the Cadians. The fighting was fierce and bloody all the way to the city. It almost goes without saying that the casualties to the imperial soldiers were terrible. By the time they reached the city limits, their numbers were decimated to a little less than one regiment, and more than two-thirds of the force had been killed in the two weeks it took to pass the woodlands. The Orks however, were not found wanting. They had unexpectedly dug in and were waiting for the Cadians in an immense trench system, spanning a several miles from the outskirts of the city. The roles had been swapped and the guardsmen were forced to assault the entrenched Orks. It was the commander of the 99th cadian, Major Envicius Armand that saved the day. He had been field-promoted to Colonel and put in command of the army. Under his leadership, the cadians made one vicious assault through the ork lines after another, playing on the battle weary soldiers thirst for vengeance over they comrades killed in the pine woods. For 72 hours straight the army pushed in spear formation towards the city limit, cutting down all greenskins in their wake with a strength and speed only cadian guardsmen in the service of the God-Emperor, can muster. As they reached the first major streets, the Ork opposition was more scattered and a lot of the greenskins had retreated to the center of the city. The force was now reduced to the strength of approximately eight companies. They linked up with the Armoured Companies that had pushed virtually un-damaged up to the city from the south. The following battle was a textbook example of an armoured assault on the center of the city. The remaining die-hard guardsmen flushed out any dug-in resistance the tanks faced. The Armoured companies shelled the Orks and their Warboss into oblivion, leveling the ancient metropolis center in the process. The Orks had lost their commander and fled into the country-side and woodlands. By the time the battle was over, additional imperial forces had arrived along with elements of Battle Fleet Hydraphur. The first to land was no-other than the 5th company of the Blood-Angels Adeptus Astartes chapter which quickly took to the task of eradicating the fleeing Orks with their known brutal efficiency. The remaining companies of the cadian force were soon reformed into the 101st Cadian Field Regiment. Major Armand was chosen to command them and was relieved of his field-promotion, only to be properly promoted to Commander-Colonel by the High Castellan of Cadia. The 101st have since repeated its success in anti-xeno warfare, and have since seen action across the Segmentum Pacificus. They retain the pride of being cadians, but have adopted several new fighting tactics. Since they remain a field regiment they are always on the move, always fighting for the Emperor and Cadia even so far away from their home-world. They are a force of grizzled veterans proud of their ability to adapt to any methods, tactics or strategies on their way to victory. Over the years, the regiment has developed into a very hard and disciplined regiment that knows no retreat. Their assaults are a brutal and relentless, knowing that the enemy must be utterly be destroyed with as much force and firepower as possible. Captain-Colonel Armand is still the supreme commander of the regiment, despite the fact that he is well into his hundred-and-forties. He is a bitter and uncompromising man, only caring for his men and the Emperor. Thus his regiment, view other regiments with some content, but are quick to ally or recruit from their ranks, should they have some abilities useful against the enemy faced in the conflict. This adaptability and grim determination is the key factor to their continued success. As a mobile regiment, they have in their short regimental history seen many bloody battles. They were there on Armageddon, at Infernus Hive, under the command of Commissar Yarrick. However, when Abaddon’s Thirteenth Black Crusade spilled from the Eye towards Cadia, the 101st was engaged in the Chiros Cardinal World subsectors, fighting off a Tyranid splinter fleet of Hive Fleet Leviathan. They are currently at 95% operational strength and stationed in the the Arius Sub-system, part of another mining zone in the Hydraphur Sector of segmentum pacifcus. Here they await the arrival of a major Tyranid splinter fleet, observed moving in from uncharted deep space.
