What Space Marine Chapter??
« on: October 30, 2002, 04:20:08 PM »
I am starting a new space marine army.
I want to know out of all the chapters, which ones have units that compliment each other the most?
I was looking at the templars, and they seem good, but i cant take devastators. i was looking at the blood angels, but they have the blood rage, and i dont really like to much randomness in my army.
i looked at the ultra marines, but everyone and their dog has an ultra marines army. the dark angels seem ok, but i dont want an all terminator army, or a ravenwing.  i looked at the space wolves, and they look good, but I cant really spend alot fo money on this army, and i would like the wolves to accompany my army if i did get into them. as for the sally's, they are to dam slow.
I dont know which chapter to go with.

can someone please help me here. i am looking for a solid army. one that the units can compliment each other greatly.   ie dragons and banshees.

please help!!

thanks.

hmm i think what your looking for is an eldar equivalent of space marines, which doesnt really exsist.  I find sallies a really nice list, they have lots of fire power, backed up with some dual flamer sqauds.

Space wovles are more assaulty though they have, their firepower units, kinda vunerable because of their low numbers though.

Angels are great, they have lots of awsome wargear, and too many disadvantages, all those plasma cannons will rip up just about anything.  and they dont have to take termies or bikes.

I think you need to be more specific in order for me to really help you.

templars:  Basic marines that get all sorts of benefits without really any drawbacks.  They lose devastators, but it really doesn't have an effect.

Vs troops, the tac squads are usually more than enough to take care of hordes.  Plus a chappie and the champ can add some real hitting power to a couple of units.

Vs vehicles, take a pred.  About the same amount firepower as a dev squad, but a lot cheaper.

Vs characters, the emperor's champion can really do some damage.  As can the chaplain.

The vows are great, as is the ability to focus tac squads on CC.

The only problem is that the type of list that works best is going to cost you some cash.  You'll need marines + rhinos, which can run up the cost.  My advice is to start small.  Buy 500 pts worth.  Paint it, play with it.  When you're done painting, buy another 500 pts.  Repeat.  You can even hold off on upgrading to 1500 for a while, as most ppl will play at 1k points.

i'd go with DA,of sourse i might be a bit buyest (i play them) .  Their tactics are simple and funcional.  upgrade all sargents to vets and put them in the deathwing, there is nothing like a stuborn army   ;).  their wargear is great! a pwr weapon that gives the user str 6! can't beat that! and plus the master of the ravenwing OWNS ALL! i took down a c'tan easy! so thats my two cents.

I like sallies, but only for character.  Crimson Fists are very much like vanilla, but have a bias towards cc and some anti-ork rules.  The combat master is a ws 5 squad upgrade for any squad in the army, which is just crazy for an assault squad or something.  they've got devs too.  Really there're no drawbacks and some nice extra stuff.  You've got to dig that maroon and blue color schem.  someone should suggest white scars, but not me.  chaos chaos chaos! play chaos

I dont really want to go with sallys, as my firend plays them. also, i want to be able to kill stuff in assault.
not be killed in assault.

I really like the Dark Angels, and their assault squad can really kick it, especially when accopanied by a Chaplain with the weaken resolve power.  I've had a DA player tear through my Ulthwe army and even Seer Councils will break when having to roll fallback with 3d6.

Plus with DAs you can still stick a tac squad in a Rhino to support your assault troops.

Go with Brazen Claw.  Noone plays them (except for me), so you'll never see any one else with your colors.  You can either play them as a vanilla army (which I do), or as a successor of the Iron Hands, and use the Iron Hands rules.

Play Space Wolves, there the best.
Blood Claws are nutters and come in units of 15, plus they get 4 attacks if they charge. Grey Hunters are great because they are equipped for close combat with pistols and ccw's but they have the true grit rule. Then you have long fangs who are devestators thst can split fire.
You also have some really strong characters, including the venerble dreadnought. They also have one of the best backgrounds in the entire game.
SO PLAY SPACE WOLVES

really? I had the empression that SWs would be easily defeated by a deathwing army.  I have played SW numerous times agisnt a really experienced player and won everytime with my deathwing, even in cc.

I say go with the "Vanilla" Codex: Space Marines

Choose your own Chapter name, colour scheme, and history, the play them how you want to play them.

In my Marine army (The Dark Paladins) I have enough units to use them as most of the "special" Chapters anyway.

With a little variation, my Landspeeders and Bikes can be used as a Ravenwing army:

My Terminators, Dreadnoughts and Land Raiders can be fielded as a Deathwing Force:

More Stand & Shoot tactics allow me to use them as Dark Angels, and I have enough Close Combat guys to play a Blood Angel or Black Templar Crusade.

My 2 Imperial Credits...
Thus spaketh Grundz, Druid, Seer, Bard, Ashaman, Pandion Knight, Ranger, Sage, Eshu, Lexicon, Apothecary, Slayer of Gods and all round nice guy!

thank you all for your help, but i am not looking for people to say stuff like
"go with DA cause they are the best"

if i wanted to hear crap like that, i could have imagined it myself. you guys can see what i have, and see what i want out of the army.  if you guys are just gonna say stuff like the above formentioned, please do not comment on it.  I would prefer a proffesional helping me out and giving me the answers that i am looking for, than a whole bunch of other people saying

"play this because i play them and they kick @$$"
I dont want to play them cause you think they kick ass.
i am looking for a very specialised marine army, not an army that kicks ass because you say so.

thanks,
Apocalypse

hmm...hate to break it to you but you don't have the type of models that decide a list.  But I'm going to chime in for BT again.

wirlwind.
crusader
5 marines with bolters
5 marines with pistol and ccw
2 plasma marines, 2 flamre marines
land speeder
force commander

These are all the models you could use.  You'd need to pick up more tac marines, preferably of the p/ccw variety.  You can do this easily by buying a blood claws package.

To give you an idea on an effective BT list, here's mine:

Chaplain
Emperor's Champion (converted Ezekiel)

4 Tac squads in rhinos, geared for assault - each has powerfist and flamer

2 tac squads in razorbacks, geared for shooting - each has plasma gun, 1 has missle launcher, 1 has plasma cannon

Land Speeder

Whirlwind

1700 pts

If you cut down the size some(in points), you'll be able to field a similar list for relatively little money.  I built this army for right around 200$.

Based on what you have, you are pretty open on what you army you CAN build just by giving or taking a few units.  Basically almost any chapter you choose can use some if not all of these units.  Here is kind of my unbiased opinion....

Since it seems that you have quirks with some of the special rules/limitations of the other "Mainstream chapters", I'd say go for a Vannilla Marine army and make up your own chapter.  First off, there are no limitations on what kind of units you can like Dev. Squads, Landspeeders, bikes, ect.  Second of all, with Vanilla Marines you can still modify the list to likings either straight shooty, Close Combat, or a balance of both.  To point out another thing, all Marines are tough all around in CC.  Even the basic Tactical squad can defeat most other troop types.  To better hepl you in CC you can always take some Assault Squads.  They have Jump packs, and can be givin powerweapons which are defnitly close combat material!  Either way, you don't really have to worry about getting eaten up in close combat.....unless you are fighting squads like banshees.  Lastly, you can always just balance your army out by haveing atleast one "cc style squad for every shooty squad".

Sorry for the long post, I hope this kinda helps.  It is unbaised you know......after all I DO play the Blood Angels! ;D

Bored1 did make a good point too.  Based on some of the stuf you have, you good easily make a Templars army.  I've seen severall Templar armies that have done good in RTTs.  Whatever you do choose, use the Wirlwind.....I've never used them but I've fought against them before **Shivers**.  PLus, the color scheme is quite easy, and their backround (The Crusader concept) is pretty cool.  Just a thought in case you didin't want to play Vannilla.
