Title: Knuckles on Necrodermis - Portraits of Campaign Heroes
Post by: Gutstikk on September 8, 2010, 07:11:06 PM
Campaign Hero Portrait guidelines

What I'm looking for from participants is the following:
Have a good picture of your Campaign hero - it ought to be an HQ, Squad Leader, or an MVP who's worth painting up. Try to make it a bust if possible - meaning the photo ends at the collarbones, sort of like a painted portrait.

If you can, have some step-by step photos - these'll be helpful
If not, or in addition, have a couple pictures of the fig from different angles

Have a small writeup of the following:
-who the model is - name, and perhaps a bit of background
-why you've taken the time to paint him up special
-what he's accomplishing/already accomplished in the campaign
-any distinguishing marks you've added to the model [insignia, notches in his knife for kills, etc]
-the distinguishing marks need photos to go with them!
-everything's gotta fit in a single post! Do all your updates via the modify button!

Follow my example below, and PM me if you need help with formatting [though you can steal mine by quoting this post then changing the text]:

EXAMPLE: You can quote this post to get the feel for the sort of code you'll be needing when you go to enter your own Campaign Hero portrait.

King Klide of the Vandalz:
Known for his brazen disregard for most enemy armor and the the preference for 'uge choppas of the nobs who ride under him. King Klide's main claim to fame is how he tends to gather as much speed as possible as he approaches enemy lines, then collide head-first with their most forward elements, smashing through enemy tanks if possible with one outstretched power klaw. He's also [thankfully!] the only King of the Vandalz ever known to have found a female ork to ride with him.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.static.flickr.com%2F3145%2F3076784103_682596a759_s.jpg&hash=f483f4f829e7ddedacdeffa455d3d04e590ef8cd) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3145/3076784103_682596a759_b.jpg)

King Klide and Dirty Nel - I decided to paint this model up as he's a special character [counts as Wazdakka Gutsmek] and forms one of the centerpieces of my old Biker army, added in when the new codex came out - also right around the time I ceased having space to do serious mini painting.

note none of these pictures are actually busts - I've not enough time before my anniversary comes up to do this proper; pretend this photo is a close-up of Klide's head. Also pretend he's fully painted! Only the first image ought to be a bust; the rest are intended to be illustrative of key features of the model. It's also quite alright if you can't do a bust, though it'd be neat to have all the posts besides mine begin with the same sort of picture.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.static.flickr.com%2F3249%2F3076783375_781b4ebaae_s.jpg&hash=602088335d7fdfca66845e267e001934339590d3) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3249/3076783375_781b4ebaae_b.jpg)

This close-up shows the hideous features of Dirty Nel, King Klide's biker butch. You can also see Klide's Power Klaw, a heinous tear n' patch from an Ogre Kingdoms iron fist. If I ever finished the model, I could also point you to the hazard striping on the gun barrels, which sadly hasn't been painted yet. I realize I'm doing you all an injustice with these pictures, but this is the sort of picture sequence I'm looking for, where you call attention with a picture to a cool feature of your model.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.static.flickr.com%2F3193%2F3076784683_5fccd111eb_s.jpg&hash=a5cca4929d8aedcead354d3a474313a3c6830baf) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3193/3076784683_5fccd111eb_b.jpg)

Here you see the [many] exhaust pipes of Betsy Rust, King Klide's kustom bike. You can also notice the auxillary flame vents [totally unnecessary for the bikes proper operation, they just shoot fire for the heck of it], and an extra gun he's looted from somewhere best left unmentioned. Yes, I know you're laughing, but I hope you follow me with the post a pic and discuss a feature of the model.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.static.flickr.com%2F3138%2F3076781211_10f29957e2_s.jpg&hash=95bc3bdca07b11d9f88b676d0bd6f79b8cd346de) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3138/3076781211_10f29957e2_b.jpg)

King Klide and his bike somewhat behind a fellow biker, for the sake of size comparison. His bike's a bit bigger and has a lot more mass than the old school Ork bikes. It's also pretty much built entirely from bits and greenstuff. and looks pretty lousy too, so save yourself some embarrassment when you enter your mini and do a good job of it!

You can also do a step-by-step from spraycoat to full-finish if you think you can accomplish this during the campaign. I'd prefer 5-6 pictures of each mini if possible, 5-8 if you're going for the step-by-step. More would be okay but this thread could get very long, no need to overkill it!

1001110111111  El-Deceivio (Deceiver)      (https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi188.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz251%2Fmoc065%2FBatReps%2FTMGM%2F1750vsIG%2Fth_P7080026.jpg&hash=5d76771c584c6895f72372f4f71030b0fbf0f588) (http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z251/moc065/BatReps/TMGM/1750vsIG/P7080026.jpg)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi188.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz251%2Fmoc065%2FBatReps%2FTMGM%2F1750vsIG%2Fth_P7080025.jpg&hash=ad930a8b6b5d3919ccad9b96bf9a4b157d78d5c7) (http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z251/moc065/BatReps/TMGM/1750vsIG/P7080025.jpg)

El-Decievio is the Ultimate in the way of Deception, Support, and Leadership. He has often led TMGM to victory and although he works alone, his machine code is always followed for the overall stratagem of each battle, and he is in overall control of all units. From pre-battle to end-battle El-Decievio uses every opportunity to effect the enemy in some manner, or to outright crush them in Close Combat.
In the Pre-Campaign Battle El-Deceivio pounded on Space Wolves for fun but he did allow his minions to butcher a few as well. As usual he set himself as the King Pin within the Second Wave Assault just so some other could have a turn ahead of him, as once he entered a battle he pretty well finished it.
In the First Campaign Game he worked as the Second Wave CC Finisher again. Mowing through Imperial Guardsman like a hot knife through butter, he then Pummeled some Sentinals to add insult to injury in a Major Victory. El-Deceivio was not impressed with the preformance of SupREME-10 when he took a minimal force to try and Secure the Tablet; thus he took it upon himself to hunt down Imperial armies that might have seen or heard of the Tablet. He assembled his 1700-1750 pt CC force and eradicated some Imperial Guardsman that got in his way as he was catching up to the Space Marines. When he did catch up to the Space Marine General that "Drew" out vs SupREME-10 he quickly ensured that there were no bio-mass survivors of the battle. Thus he took the Tablet back in an effort to get the Necrodermus Generator fully functioning.

1001110101010   SupREME-10 (Necron Lord)   (https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs188.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz251%2Fmoc065%2F40%2520K%2FNecron%2520WIPs%2FPainting%25201st%2520500pts%2Fth_P8070003.jpg&hash=cf801f4db767587759e716587ef9e72a1914f9ba) (http://s188.photobucket.com/albums/z251/moc065/40%20K/Necron%20WIPs/Painting%201st%20500pts/P8070003.jpg)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs188.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz251%2Fmoc065%2F40%2520K%2FNecron%2520WIPs%2FPainting%25201st%2520500pts%2Fth_P7270002.jpg&hash=b058040a9dad4482fac703ff679e8406493704f4) (http://s188.photobucket.com/albums/z251/moc065/40%20K/Necron%20WIPs/Painting%201st%20500pts/P7270002.jpg)
SupREME-10 is the second in command of TMGM, and personal sribe to El-Deceivio. He is often put in charge of TMG when El-Deceivio is busy elsewhere in the multi-verse. He has been know to have a new data uploads but they are rare in comparison to other Necrons as he seldom finds the need to alter his presonna.
He has fought in the Arena of Death as there was profit in it for TMGM; but normally he is an unbiassed observer that tracks the progress of other combatants so that -11 can take them out when the time is right. In battle he is unwaivering and his ability to direct other Necrons is the reason that El-Deceivio often does leave him in command. He often dominates enemies in battle as shown when he faced harald DeathWolf in the bonus mission of round 1, "interrupted" which is also known as "Kill Box"; but in this case became the box from which SupREME-10 could kill from. He did require a new data upload after the battle; but that was minor in comparison to what his bio-mass foe required.
In the bonus game for round 1 (Kill Box), -10 used his superior cunning to manipulate his opponent in such a manner to slowly and steadily attrition out their resources so that he could maintain his possition even though he had been "Interupted" by one of the most shooty Space Wolf armies in the multi-verse.

1001110101011   SupRINM-11 (Necron Destroyer Lord)   (https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi188.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz251%2Fmoc065%2F40%2520K%2FNecron%2520WIPs%2FCtan%2Fth_P6250121.jpg&hash=50331adf8e92e6db57eb4969d84f461306fe3d62) (http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z251/moc065/40%20K/Necron%20WIPs/Ctan/P6250121.jpg)
SupRINM-11 is the Force organizer of the True Necrons, as all coding to them goes directly through him. He assists El-Decievio with the decimination of software in each battle so that the True Necrons Phase into existance as needed, where needed, and in perfect unison with each others design. SupRINM-11 tends to focus on the Close Combat part of a Battle as he actually revels in the Thirll of the Kill.
In the Pre-Campign game he worked as a Front Runner or First Wave CC specialist vs Spce Wolves that fell like wheat before his Scythe. He worked with some Wraiths to make sure the job got done and he also went for some solo action to help turn the tide of battle.
In the First Campaign Game he hit the IG lines hard on turn 2, and along with some Wariths he butchered Guardsmen by the masses as well as a certain IronFist character. His only regret was that he ran out of opponents to butcher before the battle was over. In the Round 2 game and the Campaign bonus game vs Orks (It's Them), -11 was instrumental in the way he helped a squad of Wraiths to bring down 3 "Green Baron's" in the orks 1st turn assualt, and then in the way he was used to bring down the Ork Warboss and his 10 ork Knob Biker squad in the Necron turn 1. SupRINM-11 used his battle prowess very well to beat his opponents into submission and help his faction, showing once again that tactics might be one thing; but sometimes pure agresstion is what is called for.

I am borrowing from Hekkastor the skater ork idea, this will count as a warboss on a bike, more details later.

It has started, here are the bits

Lol, and here I thought I had this locked! The competition is now opened and that means this thread is too. Feel free to enter a few portraits of your campaign heroes if desired, or to update your existing ones as they gain battle scars and notoriety!

Even if you have no desire to particpate in any actual games, please note, you are still permitted to join a team with the express intent to participate solely in the campaign hero portrait element of the campaign. I look forward to seeing what all of you turn out! Direct your questions to myself, NecronCell2131, or OD from TV.

Hero's of the Brotherhood of the Spiraling Worm.

Nyarlathotep

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv472%2Fkillersquid%2Fwarhammer%2FNecrons%2FIMG_2665.jpg&hash=bd390386193057aa2047331701938549d50aa008) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v472/killersquid/warhammer/Necrons/IMG_2665.jpg)

The God who commands the Brotherhood. Not truely a C'tan, but an insane Necron Lord who demanded his own body of living metal. The results of this, is an incredibly powerful creature. It's ability to affect the minds of those fighting it, and to create illusions is notorious.

The Dark Pharaoh
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv472%2Fkillersquid%2Fwarhammer%2FNecrons%2FIMG_3739.jpg&hash=19573289f10ff64871a9e14af71788a9e87cce51) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v472/killersquid/warhammer/Necrons/IMG_3739.jpg)

The Latest of the Necron Lords to awaken from the tomb, it has taken a personal interesting in commanding the legions of warriors in the Necron cell. It has shown the ability to shroud itself in darkness, only to reappear elsewhere. This has proven to be an extremely deadly ability.

King of Dawn.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv472%2Fkillersquid%2Fwarhammer%2FNecrons%2FIMG_3384.jpg&hash=621a2cafc527d7f3a84a153cccefaf1987a34bad) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v472/killersquid/warhammer/Necrons/IMG_3384.jpg)

One of the first lords to awaken, and appears to be the most highest ranking. It's body is wreathing in fire, and has shown the ability to suck the confidence and will to fight out of it's enemy. Terror spreads when this lord walks the battlefield, especially when accompanied by his Pariah bodyguard.

Haunter in the Dark
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv472%2Fkillersquid%2Fwarhammer%2FNecrons%2FIMG_2825.jpg&hash=6b2985b6f1325cd6c863bcdfa7d378460bd6e197) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v472/killersquid/warhammer/Necrons/IMG_2825.jpg)

Mounted on a destroyer body, this Lord is the most aggressive. Most accustomed to working with hordes of scarabs to assault the enemy flank. Phase fields within it's chassis enable it to survive even the most destructive enemy weaponry. Lighting projectors which spring from within it, spread to those who stand near it, making close combat with it and it's scarab retinue something to be avoided at all costs.

BAM!
It's an Ork on a skateboard.
sorry, guys, but I haven't found a way to correctly model this guy yet. I hope that my drawing is clear enough for you guys to get the concept, though.

++++

Recently, a new Ork opponent of surprising power. Everyone knows that the Ork Warbosses have some sort of psychic charisma to draw in smaller breeds of their kind in order to wage war on the Imperium, buth this one seems to have gathered a crowd much larger than natural, which is much more anarchistic and unstructured than the normal Ork Tribes.
This Warboss, known to his followers as Dakka Hawk, has started the something that can only equated to a cultural rebellion within the Ork "society". First and foremost, he has a terrifying fascination with "skateboards", a childish toy he first encountered in the Third War for Armageddon. Instead of using it as a mode of transportation like the lowly hive children, he uses the damnable object as a tool for fighting. He can travel at far greater speed than when running, and through his Ork physiology, even propel himself at a rate of an Imperial bike for a short period of time. Unlike other crude Ork vehicles, such as bikes, a skateboard can be weaved in an out of difficult terrain easily, and can be used in Urban fighting. Using tricks and jumps, Dakka Hawk and his fellow "Skaaterz" enter buildings through windows, jump roof tops, and the like. Essentially, the Emperor hating bastard can travel at full speed through hive cities without worrying about crashing.
He is the head of a mob of highly mobile Orks, and in a manner most unlike his fellow Bosses, he runs as close to democratic form of government as Ork mentality could manage. This essentially boils down to him asking his fellow Orks whether they should fight army/planet A, or army/planet B, or both. at which point they roar "WAAAGH!" and go ahead and fight pillage, loot and destroy both targets anyways. Regardless of his policy, due to his iconic image, he is revered enough among other Orks so that when he shouts loudly enough they still obey him without question.
However, this idea of freedom to disobey the warboss and fight without any prior planning irritated Ghazghkull Thraka, who personally sought Dakka Hawk out to give a good thrashing for ruining one of the major ambushes that Tharka had planned by simply rushing in to the fight because he and his fellows decided that would be best.
Dakka Hawk quickly ran off planet, finding that he had greater things to do that spend the rest of eternity on Ghazghkull's trophy rack. Recently, he has found something else to work for. After a brief scuttle with a Necron Cell, he had found the next evolution for his skateboard. The Necron Skimmer.
Intent as hell on finding this technology, Dakka Hawk, and all the speed freaks who chose to follow him, made a beeline for a campaign seething between Orks and Necrons over a tablet that could potentially unlock the secrets to Necron technology.
Now, he and an anarchistic mob of skimmer-board obsessed Orks have decided (by manner of shouting until they could no more) that the tablet would be theirs, no matter the cost.
He and his fellows no spend their time riding around the planet non-stop, beating the living and robotic crap out of everything and anything that happens to be in their line of sight. A majority of them ride these "skateboards" and using rockets strapped to their boards, they can now match the actual speed of a bike consistently and for long periods of time. Even more horryinfingly, with the help of a competent big mekk, the bulky boards can fire the same ammunition as an Ork biker.
Emperor save any fool who comes across these monsters

I'm in the process of making a biker army with skateboards as my first big conversion project, with the hope that people will actually let me play them as bikers. If not, than my models will be highly stylized boys, Nobz, and Posses, which will still make me happy.
I figured that Orks and skateboard culture could go hand in hand with each other. Too outrageous?

As a skater, I love this, any idea what you'd use for the boards? I'd love to see a conversion of an ork grinding down a rail  ;D

Well, due to my current lack of bits (I just started collecting, so I only have the AoBR models), I am using a cut of Popsicle sticks for the boards, with the left over wood for terrain. I'm adding bits of cut up legos, wire and such, but my biggest problems with modeling are wheels and guns, which I'm still trying to get around.

My warboss is going to be grinding on a rail now, thanks for the suggestion.

Toys R Us sells those finger skate boards, sure you will have to paint them as the colors are definitly not orky, but at least they already have the right shape and wheels. Not sure on price, I think it was 10 bucks for a 5 pack.
I have looked at them before wondering how to pin an ork onto one, now I think I may have to get some and convert them to full orkyness. Maybe mine will be storm boys, or commandoes... Hmmmm, brain working must go get coffee now.

Finger skateboards would be massive though, they'd be over the height of the model whereas the average board is under 3' in length. Not sure there's an easy way of doing it. Also what wargear are you running on your Warboss?

I really enjoy the entries so far and hope everyone gets a chance to post something in. I'm also hoping some of these get tied into a fiction submission as well - the opportunity to learn a bit more about the character's exploits should be too good to pass up!

Well I couldn't resist so went and got some finger boards, X-game boards for 4 for $9.99, and your right the boards are a little wider and the about the same length as a biker base(maybe an 1/8" wider and 3/4" longer). But they look so koooolll. So I think I will use some left over loota parts and make a warbuggy. A  loota boy on a skateboard, counts as warbuggy with TL big shoota. Maybe figure out a way to make it look like he is airborn so he can also count as having a ram....

I know this is not even close to having a hero thingie, but it is just continuing on with the discussion. Now if I use the AoBR boss model then it would be the right size, Hmmm, must go get codex and see if boss can have a jump pack... If not then he could count as a "biker" boss.

BAM!
It's an Ork on a skateboard.
sorry, guys, but I haven't found a way to correctly model this guy yet. I hope that my drawing is clear enough for you guys to get the concept, though.

I have stolen your idea and have started by using a spare AoBR warboss with a "little" modification. You can look at my post above to see the assembly is completed, I used a fingerboard and stole a assault cannon from the SM dred kit and added a whfb squig to the front.

I do not know if I should add something to count as an engine or to leave it as it is. I will post more when I get it painted and when I think of a story for him.

I'm glad to have started a a Skateboard subculture within the Orks. I'll do my best to nail the ninty five thesis of skateboarding on the nearest Speed Freek Big Mek's door, but I won't make any promises.
I myself am working on a warboss on a skateboard (also the AoBR), though I am making the board much smaller, and will be suing a lot of legos, spare bits, green stuff and the like to make as dynamic a model as I can. I've already started a modeling post on it (linky: http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=206038.0 (http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=206038.0))
I'm currently trying to make the base so that there is a rail for my boss to grind on, without making the model to unstable or shakey. Hopefully, I'll have updated pics by tomorrow, or for sure the day after that.

Your conversion looks nice, don't forget there are skateboards called long board that are more rough terrain friendly, basically a surfboard on wheels.

Orks being not the most civilized of the races would not have smooth streets to ride the smaller boards, so having a long board for riding the war torn streets of the world they just crushed would be more their style, not to mention the weight issue as orks weigh more than a human.

So I am considering mine to be on a long board, this way I can use the premade finger boards. So do you think I should add an engine, or something that looks like a thing that will make the board go like a bike?

Sorry to take this long to responmd, but I've had some major SNAFUs with my computer... I'd try adding an engine, but I wouldn't say it's a hundred percent necessary. I like the idea longboards, the only concern I'd have is base size, but these are probably friendly game onlys, so its not that big of an issue. If not an engine, try maybe having a couple of grots hanging on for their lives, if you want a comedic effect.

Right now, I've made some process on mine, so here is Dakka Hawk in all his unfinished glory.

I don't know how clear everything is, but i keep getting forced to do photos indoors due to horrid timing and bad weather. Still, I hope you guys can get the gist of the model.

So here's the base. I tried going for a trashed industrial look, and I don't know how well it looks in the picture but at least from a far away distance, it looks like steel rods, pipes and dirty broken glass, so I'm happy with it.

The warboss in an experimental pose on the base: ( I apologize for the grittyness)

And a close up of my so far favorite model.
