New Player looking to defend against Necrons...
« on: February 19, 2015, 03:53:14 PM »
Hello Everyone!!

I'm new to this site and to 40k(Well in this decade).  Recently a buddy and I decided to actually get in to 40k this summer.  I played back when I was a kid(10+ years ago) very casually.  Didn't know much, didn't have much, etc.  Well now my friend and I actually want to have a good game night once a month or so and decided 40k as the winner.

I need to come up with a race, and relatively soon!  My friend(of whom has no previous knowledge of 40k) was excited when he finally chose his race... Necrons.  GDI!!  Out of all the ridiculousness of 40k, I remembered Necrons to be the hardest to kill and biggest pains in the butt.  So yes, there is my dilemma!

I'm pretty open to just about any race/squad.  Any suggestions or experience with taking down Necrons whilst still having a full head of hair at the end of the match?  I appreciate any input!!

Welcome to the forum :).

Which armies did you play when you were a child?  Did of any of them appeal to you?  This might be a useful starting point for you when it comes to choosing a new army.

Welcome Lando.

Pretty much any army can be configured to be competitive. So it's more about what you enjoy playing as. Glass Cannon style, or redundancy built into every squad, or implacable phalanx, or swift specialists.  Even within armies that focus on a particular style you can manipulate the lists represent a nice variety.

So:shooting or cc or a good balance?

Long range, close or medium?

Mechanized or foot?

Elite or swarm?

Know that's not a lot of help yet, but help us help you  :)
So, what your saying is it's not your fault you look stupid by using words you don't get?
Flawless logic.

'Crons just got a new book, and they are pretty tough to kill.  Some of their old weaknesses (like being swept in melee) went away too.  The good news is, unless your buddy plans to spend hundreds of dollars on flyers, he'll probably be relatively slow moving.

Whatever army you go with, you'll want to focus fire.  If you let his units live, he'll reinforce them with fresh bodies.   He'll also have tons of units with a special rule that makes them AV 13 until you inflict a penetrating hit, so you'll want to make sure you have at least a few high-strength weapons running around.

'Crons are super durable, but they don't have an abundance of overwhelmingly strong powerful weapons. They have good weapons, don't get me wrong, but nothing you can't deal with.  Just keep hitting each machine until it drops. :)
