Commissioning prices
« on: October 20, 2018, 10:53:14 PM »
I've been thinking for a while about possibly getting into doing commission work.  I like to think that I paint to a decent table top quality.

The one barrier I keep coming up against is, if I do decide to jump into this business, what to charge?  How do I come up with the numbers?  How do I justify the price?
If there is anything that recent politics has taught us, it is that quotes taken out of context can mean what ever you want them to.

This is a very good question.  Is there any way you can find out how others do it?

I'm sure if anyone knows around here, it would be Cavalier since he is a commission painter. I would try to shoot him a message or an email and see if you can get in touch with him. Other than that, I'm stumped on the subject ;).

It's all relative. What are you willing to charge for your time that still makes it worth it? Everyone wants a lot for nothing but you need to make an acceptable profit. For a tabletop standard I've seen anywhere from $7/fig to $15/fig (for something like a Space Marine).

You could send some make believe quotes out to a few companies and see what they're going to charge for different types of models.

Here is a video from a commission painter on how to set your prices.
