Title: Wolfspear 4th Jarldom
Post by: Lord of Winter and War on November 29, 2021, 10:10:51 AM
Started work on a new project, an army based on the Wolfspear Chapter.

Finished a couple of test models, and converted a captain to lead the force.

I had to look these guys up, they're pretty cool! And you did a great job. The leather work is especially impressive.

Thanks!

When I read the white dwarf article about them, I knew I had to make an army of them.

The leather is just gore-grunta contrast paint on grey seer!

Made some progress last night.

I had built an Infiltrator squad out of half a box of reavers, and spare parts I had kicking around from the easy-to-build infiltrators. Most of the backpack ariels are broken, so I'll have to replace them when I eventually get a box of incursors. I primed them last night, as well as the Captain, and started work on him. I also have a picture of the rest of the reaver squad, which is half done.

all of this is 24pl, so that means I have enough to start with crusade games (once I finish painting).

Cool to see someone finally taking on the Wolfspears! And right here on the forum no less  ;D!

They look wonderful, Killersquid. I agree with Godspeed - that's some great leatherwork you created there.

Looking forward to seeing more!

Thank you very much :) The hair is just Gryph Orange contrast paint, very easy!

Thanks man, The Wolfspear, are a fleet based chapter, so I wanted their bases to look like they are on a ship (or something like that).

Thank you!

Spent some time last night working more on my Phobos Captain.

Thanks! it's just apothicary white contrast paint, over greyseer base. Then I edge highlight with Ulthuan grey!

Finished the Phobos Captain, and started basecoats on the infiltrators.

Well, as long as there is one or two new kits, that'll be a huge improvement of all their previous codex releases lol. The bar is set low. Eldar has been so dominant competitively for so long, I'm pretty happy they have their time out of the sun ha ha.

For the wolfspear, Been busy with building stuff.

Built enough models for a 1000pt game agaisnt my buddies Tyranids, which was a lot of fun. Looking forward to start getting the rest built and more paint on the models!

Also, finally finished my Reiver/ Hounds of Morkai squad. Currently building my stormspeeder.

It was one of those games in which everything went well for me, and nothing for my opponent. Besides his hive tyrant being invincible, so wasn't a fair test of the army. I also have a lot of rules to learn.

Finished my stormspeeder, kept the crew out for easy painting. Hopefully I can get them back in lol.

Thanks for the kind words. The armour is very easy, just a coat of contrast paint, and an edge highlight! Makes for easy power armour.

The bases is just a lot of washes and drybrushes. Really enjoy working on them.

Small update. Got the first unit of infiltrator's done. Working on my Stormspeeder now.

Another update. Stormspeeder is almost done, just gotta finish the base, a buddy 3D printed a base for me, but it was a little small (80mm instead of 90MM), but mostly fits. Hard to photograph. Also, started on some eliminators and Incursors.

Amazing job on that speeder! Great placement for the decals and just that hint of green on the missile pods really just helped the finish. The only thing that bugged me was that only one guy had his eye lenses painted, but I am sure that's on the way. So happy that you painted the speeder and put the riders in after, which allowed you to better paint the interior. It allowed such a better overall finish and better painted riders, which I find so many people just ignore in place of getting it finished for the tabletop quicker.

I think I did all the lenses could just be the photo too. It would be way to hard to paint them inside the cockpit. I'm such a messy painter, so it would have been a nightmare with the white armour!

Thank you very much. The Cloak is just snakebite leather contrast paint, with a hughlight of Zandri Dust, so very easy and quick!

Small update, been working on a squad of Incursors, only have 32 infantry to paint after these guys are done.

My plan for my 2000pts list is the following.

Phobos cap (done)
Phobos Librarian (done)
phobos lt (Primed)

x3 invictor warsuits (1/3 done, 2/3 unbuilt)
x2 hounds of morkai squads (1 done, 1 unprimed)

x3 incursor squads (0 done, 2 primed)
x2 infiltrator squads (1 done, 1 unprimed)

x1 stormspeed thunderstrike (1/1 done)

x3 eliminator squads (1 done, 2 primed)

Great work as always KS. The Eliminators and Infiltrators are super, but the real star of the show is definitely the Stormspeeder for me. Such clean lines and such a nice finish. I need to reiterate just how much I love your colour scheme. Really nice, with excellent use of complimentary spot colours.

Thanks! I feel like I'm really slogging with this project, but Real-life (wife, puppy, work) takes up a lot of my time lol.

Had my first game today, Forgive the pictures, my buddy just finished building his army so it's a sea of grey. Play agaisnt Genestealer Cults. Made some horrible deployment mistakes, but fought back pretty well. Lost 60ish to 90sih, so not bad considering how badly I messed up lol.

I was pretty happy with my list. My Librarian with the Armour of Russ, and my Hounds of Morkai were the MVP's for sure. Genestealer cults just had a lot of multi-damage attacks, and lots of bonuses to hit/wound and re-rolls, it was pretty crazy how devastating their shooting was. looking forward to getting in my practice.

Hi friends, small progress today.

I bought a third box of las-fusil eliminators (no pictures), which I think will be good fire support. Also, I built and painted a new Phobos Wolfguard.

Looking like I might want play that new Vanguard-Spearhead army of renown, but I can't use my stormspeeder. What do you folks think would be a good way to replace that 160pts? I'm thinking a unit of supressors, and then 60pts of just extra hounds of morkai or infiltrators. Not sure though.

A hood makes him so much more sneaky! The whole 9' tall, and bulky power armour is completely negated by the hood lol.

I feel I need to say again how amazing your colour scheme is; it has such a nice balance of warm and cold tones. I could definitely see it being a colour scheme produced by the GW guys.

On top of that, you're executing at such a high level. Outstanding work.

Thanks again everyone for the kind words!

Played my second game with the Wolfspears against Aledari on the weekend. He was new to the book, it was a good practice for getting the army out. My opponent misinterpreted one of his abilities, which had a huge effect on the results of the game, and we didn't realize until afterwards, so we decided not to count it as a win for either of us. It was certainly very fun deploying models all over the board, and then re-deploying with Lords of Deceit. The Captain in Gravis armour was fun to use. With Hunter, he moved 5", advanced d6+2" and then could charge 2d6+2", so he was very fast.

It's at my buddy's place. The table were originally made to accommodate 6'x4' tables, but put in foam inserts to make it the size for 9th edition games. This has the added bonus of giving a bunch of extra room to store models!

Ah right, I forgot they changed the game size. I felt like the table looked small xD, What was the point size for the game?

Cool board, very GW style in the amount of terrain I feel like. Poor eldar guy, got boxed in really fast during the game it seems. A cool looking Saim Han on that side too.

But yeah like all the other guy's, I have to stress how amazing your color scheme and painting skills look. And once you put everything on the board it just looks amazing. I noticed on the i Victor warsuit, you have a lighter color under the decalco, on the shoulder pads, but barely brighter. How do you do these highlight on the bulbous metal pieces?

Keep up the good work it's a really coming along cleanly.

I boxed him in, but he tabled me in three turns lol. It was a 2000pt game. The pictures were taken after deployment, most of my army can deploy outside of my deployment zone.

Arf... Eldar are kinda busted as beslubber at the moment not gonna lie. What was the rule he miss read by any chance, since I play eldar too. So I don't make the same mistake.

He had four farseers, and he thought that the eldrich storm strat repeated the whole damage for each psychic action, so instead of just once.

So, he read it that (assuming each farseer completed the psychic actions)

The first farseer did d3 mortal wounds to all units,  the second would do d3+1, the third d3+2, and the fourth d3+3,

So he did 4d3+5 mortal wounds to my units,  instead of d3+3. So in one eldrich storm he killed my librarian, one warsuit and four units of primaris marines.

Turns out,  not the case lol. But that basically ended the game for me.

I didn't mention the metallics on the cables for the snipers, but holy crap that is sublime.

Ooooffff. Seriously good looking army you have there. It's an incredible spectacle and it looks even better when you move in to check the details. As I've said before, it's just such a clean, coherent colour scheme that ties every model together so naturally.

Excellent work.

Just absolutely mind blowing - I love how crisp that white-grey is! Beautiful! I don't see how you paint so fast and keep up that level of quality - but I'd love to gain that ability over time, haha  :).

How much of the army do you have to go?

Keep it up!

Thanks man, just leadbelcher, black wash and highlight.

Thank you! I have a LT and a squad of Suppressor, and I'm done working on these guys for a while. My next plan is to build a display board for them, but I think I will work on my terrain collection first.

Yup that army look amazing. Nobody can say otherwise.

Are you planning on making your terrain piece as part of you display shelf? Like usable diorama kinda thing or are you just free styling both?

Mainly for when I go to tournaments, you're often graded on having a detailed display board when they consider scoring for appearance awards.

That captain looks sick!

On a bit of a tangent: your army made me realize how much the SM range has changed since the early 2000s look when I discovered the hobby. It's a whole different vibe to them now. Less boxy and blunt. More... tech-y? Not sure, just made me think.

Thanks!

The Primaris range certainly has a new aesthetic to it. I wasn't a huge fan of the space marine models until they came out,  I like the tacti-cool look about them, particularly the phobos line.

The hover vehicles I think are really cool, especially once I had them in hand, I eventually want to get some more to go along with the gladiator.
