Using an Avatar agaisnt Daemonhunters
« on: December 25, 2004, 11:40:23 PM »
How do I use him? He would easyliy get shot down by them, and he would not last as long in CC because of thier huge strenght improvement, so How would I effectivley use one agaisnt a Daemonhunter force?

You need the fabled 'Oh My God' squad. It's the avatar and his three wraithlord bodyguard. The wraithlords actually block line of sight so you can shield him quite effectively.

If that is not your cup of tea (it's no one's really) then you should conceal him behind terrain in a likely place for teleporters, then counter assault with his Awesomeness.

The Oh My God squad doesn't work so well anymore in 4th ed.... still they would be higher in the target priority. I guess that would be the best way to go about it but i wuoldn't suggest using an avatar at all, with their NFW, they have a high enough S to effectively wound it, and an avatar's save isn't exactly impressive. Getting shot at with Psycannons would also ruin an avatar's day, so a teleporting squad with dual psycannons can put dirty great dents in your avatar. The charachters are even worse, with anti daemon skills and other things, things like the force weapon 4++ save having Grand master.

Your best bet is leaving him at home, but when you can't (say in a tournament) just be careful to engage units without special rules against him.  Head for the Guard or Inducted Marine units.  Just steer clear of the Grey Knights, that's what you have Starcannons for.

Just remember that you can't have IC's form a unit, and the Avatar would only be able to join one Wraithlord, if at all.  Don't bother with the IC rules anyway, just put the Avatar behind the three WL's and out of sight.  As Large Targets, they would block LoS to the Avatar if they're abreast to one-another.

Taking a daemon against an army of daemon killers just seems plain silly to me!

Once in CC this low-cost giant actually plows through a lot of bodies before taken down. Yes, given that he has no save he is vulnerable to these special attacks, but with decent T and good WS he is still a while in the fight before taken down, and he is cheap considering that every blow he lands ends a high-price grey knight.

Lost Roads - finally released!
