Eldar Cousin Playstyles
« on: April 30, 2020, 12:16:11 AM »
How do the playstyles differ between Craftworld, Drukhari, and Harlequins?

Before we continue, I have to say that I am a slow player, and have had issues with slow turns when I used to play Guard.

Also, how would a pure Drukhari force deal with an Alaitoc Eldar, with lots of minuses to hit?

Harlies are an elite force, low numbers, can be tricky to use, typically used as an allied force. There is a slight variation between Harlie factions, but since hve a small number of units to select from, they don't differ in plays style too much, basically, nrush in and stab things with blistering speed... a troupe be a really dangerous thing, killed Magnus with Kisses.. .. what do you expect from follower of the laughing god... :)

This is an elite force, so be warned, the sheer volume of fire that is in 40k now will see them crumble.

For Craftworlder and drew carries.. both of these armies can be tinkered with to make them run really differently, you can have fast moving hard hitting glass cannons, or high resiliency low model count.. So, it might be better to say what play styles you are attracted to.

In addition to what Magenb said, craftworlds has so many different units and a multiverse of builds you can do to play slow or ludicrous speed, a bit of finesse. Dark eldar, not as many tough builds, but lots of fast, in your face units but harlequins, as he said, just flat fast. I play a pure harli army and it is difficult at best to win but funds all get out. I haven't mixed any of my armies together yet but feeling like I may try after this lock down is over. Hope this helps but either way any of the 4 eldar armies is fun to play.SAIM-HANN!

I keep telling myself that I want to get into one of the 3 factions of Eldar once I finish painting my Thousand Sons ... SO hopefully within the next decade, you know :P

In a way, it's a good thing, because I see that GW is still updating the line to plastic, so they should be mostly there once I finally start to pick them up.

Hey bud. Best way to describe them in my experience is this:

Asuryani/Craftworlds: An army of specialists where almost every unit has a single dedicated job. The challenge is in getting the right balance to handle any opponent. When you can coordinate everything they smash your opponent, when they dont, they get picked apart.

Drukhari: Death by a thousand cuts. They come at you in swarms with lots of guns, and lots of specialist weapons scattered in low across the entire army. Hyper mobile, lots of guns, lots of attacks in melee, but fragile. Drukhari gang up in numbers against priority targets and overwhelm you with their numbers and mobility.

Harlequins: Assassination squads that rely on trickery and careful selection of wargear to take their opponents apart. You really need to know your stratagems, psychic powers and have excellent skills in deployment, the movement phase and model placement to get the job done, but they CRUSH when you know what you how to use them. Demand a high level of skill but can run rings around opponents when well used. They have incredible damage denial abilities when using lightening fast reactions, psychic penalties to hit, built in penalties to hit on their vehicles and bikes.

Hope that helps!

Cool, thanks! I'm getting the vibe that I shouldn't play any of these armies against new players. It feels like some people might get angry if they can't interact with your units.

I definitely like the idea of Ninja Clowns from outer space. I've always like the Eldar Craftworld models, and the Drukhari.

The more I hear about the Drukhari lore though, the more, it just seems too real to me ... Kinda off-putting. I was watching a lore video about the Ynnari though, and I guess I can always think of them as having joined the Ynnari, and maybe not needing to rely on torture to survive.

Hey Dread, you're from Texas? How is the gaming scene over there? My half-brother and little cousin live in Houston. I wanted to go visit them, and check out TX.

The Drukhari are probably not the most cuddly of factions, they are pretty brutal if that's something that concerns you. They have a society that revolves around murder, slavery, and torture.

Well I live on the other side of Texas from Houston but I know a few people from the big cities here and it's pretty good from what I hear. I know San Antonio and Austin have some big gaming going on and I've heard that Houston has some big game con`s every year. The Dallas area has a big gaming community. I'm over in West Texas, San Angelo. We have a decent size gaming community, 3 game stores which is big for our area. When you get here, I hope you have a good time, hopefully this virus thing will be over by then so you can enjoy seeing our beautiful state. 8)

there isn't really a true "good" in the 40k universe, its just how much digging you have to do to before that nasty streak comes out. Craftworld Eldar and Tau are probably the ones who you have to do the most digging to find their dark side.

Ynnari doesn't have enough lore yet to flesh out where they sit in the grim dark scale, but they basically directly use the energy of their fellow dead to power themselves up and their Avatar has all the physical signs of being something slaanesh might spit out...

@dbecer01- None of the armies non-interactive. They are very fragile and have many bad match-ups. Hordes and fast assault armies are a bane for Aeldari. Describing them as non-interactive is like saying Thousand Sons are unfair in the psychic phase. Speed and elusiveness are the defining characteristics of the Aeldari armies as is their fragility.

Its worth noting if the nastier aspects of the Drukhari are unappealing to you, you can play them as Corsairs as well which are a major theme throughout the book. Phil Kelly who helped reinvented the Drukhari plays a Corsair themed Drukhari army, and while rutheless Corsairs are more like wild Eldar pirates or rogue Craftworlders/Kabalites than anything else.

I play harlequins as my primary 40k army for the past 5 years.

Close ranged,  deadly in combat, but die to a stiff breeze.

L0ts of special rules, and they break a lot of the core rules in the game.

They struggle against high volume of fire, and long ranged fire. They are pretty durable against single, or low volume of powerful attacks but crumble if forced to make a lot of saves.

Yeah, I like the idea of playing as space pirates.. or Ninja space clowns ... or pompous space elves.

In my playing group people don't like Eldar ... but I want some, because they are some of the best-looking models when painted well.

Yeah you can make a Corsair themed army out of either Drukhari or Asuryani. Drukhari Kabals can be Corsairs right out of the box. For Craftworlders, a few headswaps is really all it takes. Windriders, Fire Prisms, Falcons, Nightspinners, War Walkers, Vypers were all legit Corsair units when they still had a codex. Crimson Hunters are really just Nightshade Interceptors which are standard Craftworld flyers with no narrative reason not to take them. Of course the Forgeworld options such as the Hornet, the Warp Hunter and the Nightwing are all classic Corsair units as well.

Harlequins are natural allies to Corsairs as well. I've been running a Corsair themed Asuryani battalion with a patrol of Harlequins and absolutley loved it. Some of the most fun I've had in 40k and its very thematic.
