H's Painting Table!
« on: October 18, 2023, 01:23:49 PM »
Having seen the attempted release of Legions Imperialis I was quite excited to play some tiny scale wargaming. It hasn't turned up but we have plenty of old Epic to play with. So lets see whats been sitting in the bits box for, um, the best part of 20 years!

Classic Warhound Titans. Adorably goofy looking little guys.

A full 24 hours in nail varnish remover to clear off the glooped on paint scheme from the previous owner and gave them a basic checked yellow/black scheme.

The colour pallet available is somewhat limited seeing as most my paints are rock solid and I only purchased a handful of new ones. If I play any games they might take to the field in support of my Crimson Fist Space Marines but... we'll see.

Next up the infantry of Craftworld Alatoc. Bought as part of a job lot in early 2000s, sold, bought back and now finally getting some rennovation and love. These are the classic 1995 plastics, it was an Eldar Dreadnought back in the day, the lascannon/brightlance replaces an arm.

The keen eyed might spot some Spacefleet eldar, these I mostly use as aircraft in Epic.

Lastly some rebased vypers onto cool round bases, and some Fire Prisms that I'm quite happy with. Bases made from cut down GW flying sticks mounted into the plywood discs.

Obviously the perfect goblin green lawn for the 90s feels is the only way to base your minis!  8)

Something for scale right  ;D

While the new style Wave Serpent and Fire Prisms are lovely, I'm less of a fan of the new firestorm Anti Air tank. In Epic bring AA is very important otherwise you're a sad panda watching aircraft have free reign on ground attack runs.

Here we have two ancient metal Firestorms from approx 1995/96, now sat on flying bases and given a paint scheme to try and blend in! Reckon I'll get away with this?

In other thoughts I'm mulling over going back to the wave serpents and giving them fun yellow stripes because they're feeling a bit plain.

I think you should get away with that. For the wave serpents, I might give them a different stripe pattern - on the left wing instead of the right one, or a different number than 2, to distinguish them from the fire prisms. That would add a bit of color while keeping them looking unique.

I'm thinking each squadron should have slightly unique variation on unit markings, this might give me a headache down the road but thats a problem for future H. I like the aethestic of keeping to a limited colour palate with bright contrasts.

Also because only one project isn't enough!

The most glorious White Scars return! I started collecting White Scars in 1999 in 40K so their high speed high risk fighting style has been part of my gaming for a long time.

Its some good feels to be painting them again. The rhinos are 1995 Space Marine originals and this is my first test run with contrast painting and I'm pretty impressed with how they've done on these old low detail vehicles. They probably won't see a Legions Imperialis battlefield but where fun to test put painting on.

Never seen the epic stuff in someone's project log before - awesome!

Love the Aeldari stuff - I do think some stripes will look pretty crisp on the vehicles.

Some of the epic aeldari range looks more new than others - or am I mis-perceiving that?

I love the White Scars. Looking forward to seeing them finished. Teeny tiny space Mongols for the win. Does your ruleset of choice differentiate between them and other Space Marines?

The latest batch for a trip to the nail varnish remover to get paint off them is this selection of classic 1997 metals minis. This version of Land Raider came shortly before the modern 40K land Raider we have now (and then Forgeworld reproduced this one as a variant!)

I love the White Scars. Looking forward to seeing them finished. Teeny tiny space Mongols for the win. Does your ruleset of choice differentiate between them and other Space Marines?

It does! Epic Armageddon has been more or less abandoned to the community in the wind down of specialist games in the mid 2000s and there are well recognised community rulesets commonly collected as NetEpic or EpicUK (there are a fair few tournaments run in the UK to the UK rules).

Short version is the White Scars get a varient list with bigger bike units who can reroll terrain tests!

The new Legion Imperialis rules do have different traits for each Legion as its heresy era but we don't know details. One of the articles revealed White Scars get an improvement to their Jink saves. But no idea who useful that is.

Besides which I picked White Scars because they're cool more than they win games (they definelty didn't win much in 3rd ed!)

Never seen the epic stuff in someone's project log before - awesome!

Epic is a fun game, focus on manoeuvre and units working together. Plus you get very fun games, you might roll up a predator tank squadron to neuralise antiair guns, clear the path for a thunderhawk assault to drop 40 assault marines and a chaplain onto and objective. Marvellous.

(You have a PM!)

Looking great! Just don't sneeze or you'll never find them, haha.

Lol major hazard. Just done a very fiddly kitbash to convert a biker into a captain, will be appearing soon!

I have two of the old Eldar Firestorms as well.  They are painted very differently though.  I tried to follow the original GW studio army colour scheme with the yellow and red, but the colours came out rather too garishly.  I much prefer your colour choices.  For real nostalgia though, you need the original Wave Serpents from the early 1990s second edition Epic Space Marine era.  They were beautiful (I have two, but they are not well painted at all).

For anyone who has never played Epic, you have missed out.  Second edition Epic is arguably GW's best ever game.  NetEpic is an evolution of that set of rules that is free to download and play.  The alternative is Epic Armageddon (a much more streamlined version with more 'realistic' rules) whose rules are also freely available and regularly updated.

These firestorms must be from early 1990s then. For the 1997 version it was different turrets on the modorn(ish) style falcon chassis. I have two of each specialist tank, and lots of the old triangle falcons... in garish bright yellow and red!! (I'll add a pic at some point).

I never played Epic before Epic Armageddon but believe its the perfect balance between detail and streamlining.

Having seen the battlereport of Legion Imperialis game I'm co concerned. It reminds of of the 40K Apocalypse games 14yos played used to play in GW where they stuff everything they own on the table, then take it off again.

Not on the painting table (or likely to be!) But fun to look at for historical purposes...

The first version of the Eldar Falcon was this triangular death star like ship, appearing in 1991 in plastic. The vehicle that would later become a fire prism accompanies as well as a sample jetbike stand and vyper.

Painting bright flat colours was the fashion at the time!

From left to right: Scorpion heavy tank, Warp Hunter, Death spinner and the ever popular transport, the Wave Serpent.

From the first version of Epic in approx 1991 the first generation of Eldar vehicles appeared in 6mm scale long before getting models in 40K. The curving organic design style hasn't appeared yet except possibly the wave serpent.

Edit: go go gadget automerge! :)

These are the models with which I am more familiar.  I love them.  I still have plenty of these.  You've used the 'updated' names though.  Originally, the Scorpion was a Tempest and the Nightspinner was a Doomweaver.  Tempests were absolutely amazing in second edition.  Their firepower was a thing of true beauty.  The aesthetics of all of these models still cut it today in my opinion and I prefer them to later designs, although the newer designs are still good, except for the titans!

The Firestorm came out somewhere around Titan Legions, so 1995/1996 sort of period, not long before second edition was replaced by Epic 40K.  In many ways, it was Titan Legons that killed second edition because it made titans too powerful and infantry increasingly irrelevant.

As for the models, I love the paint work and the runes, especially on the Deathstalker Prism Cannon in the first photo.  Also, you know that you want to finish painting those old models ;).

The old very yellow models were painted are by the previous owner I got the job lot from.

The Tempest/Scorpion super heavies might get some paint, they still lay down some tasty firepower and the models seem good to me, I don't dislike them.

Doomweavers/nightspinners I only have two, three are needed for a formation. I might dismantle a deathstalker prism (the other one is unpainted). to get the hull and adapt a gun for it. An old 40K Dark Eldar spinner gun might do the trick. (Buying one on ebay doesn't look great...)

The falcons I think are getting retired. I have some new style ones that have turned up. I do have some titans but they're in a terrible state so someway off getting reconditioned!

Recent painting progress is back to fabulous Space Machines! (Looking at how much stuff is needed I'll just quietly use them to pad out squadrons in Legions)

A whole bunch of tiny bikey bois queing up for paint...

What are the bases made out of? The top has a wood grain but the sides look like plastic.

Another perk of both second edition and Net Epic is that Doomweavers are fielded in squadrons of two.  You've got all the models to play Net Epic.  If you lived somewhere closer you could play against me.  The alternative would be look for a third one on the internet, as having a second Deathstalker Prism Cannon could be useful.

The Land Raiders are looking good.  Those Epic 40K era models are decent and I always love seeing the less popular Space Marine factions.  White Scars also have a great colour scheme.

So why do you not go on ebay while drunk?

New in box! After a week of hoping to get outbid and eventually winning it for, well, three times more than it sold for in 1997.

But White Scars gotta go fast and this is my favourite design of speeder, although I do already have 8 of them... I'm not sure if I should open it or not!

(And two in 40K scale actually, once won a tournament game by dropping the tiny 2nd edition speeder perfectly inside a ring of infantry trying to block me from the objective. The guy forgot to put one dude in the middle and left a gap the plastic current soeeder would not have fitted. He so was annoyed  ;D)

I was on ebay looking for a third one and only found them in expensive job lots, might keep an eye out.. the other prism cannon is unpainted so could on day get reunited with a chassis?

As much as I appricate the offer of a game there are some local guys who do EpicUK which is mildly rebalanced Epic Armageddon. And I'll try Legions if GW ever manage to actually sell any!

That's a lot of bike bois! Suppressing the urge to make vroom noises...

Nah its cool, I do that a lot...

I wonder if any of my whites scars 40k battle reports survive on the forum. I forget how to make the search feature work...

Not much painting progress this week so heres a couple of photos from the archive. My 40K White Scars in action back in the day! (Probably 2010 or thereabouts, I stopped playing at the end of 6th edition)

Its not retreating if you're tactically relocating for a massive flank attack!

Orks about to get on the wrong end of an awesome flank attack. Whirlwind living dangously as prime distraction.

Yes yes I know, a somewhat aggressive playstyle... anyow, more epic painting coming this week. Its Thunderhawk time, because gotta go fast!  ;D

Edit: dug out my post history for battle reports, still looking for my old painting blogs! (This list is for my own benefit mostly, I fully understand if no one else looks though these old links  ;) )

Cheers for the pictures from way back when!

Its not retreating if you're tactically relocating for a massive flank attack!

That reminds me of a mega battle at the local GW where I'd brought my fledgling White Scars force. The Khorne player opposite me (a teen like me at the time) resorted to insulting my masculinity because I kept pulling my bikers back out of the charge range of his unmounted Berzerkers. That's what you get for bringing an army without a single model that can reach out beyond 12", as several people including me pointed out to him! ;D I believe I eventually charged and wiped out his by-then depleted lead unit before time ran out. Happily not an opponent I ever played again.

Its beating rather unsavoury chap, what-ho old bean?s, doubly so if you can do it in a manner that really rubs it in. I remember a warhammer tournament where a khorne deamon army was destroying everything, in my game he spent 6 turns chasing a high elf great eagle around because frenzy means go for the closest model... while I pelted him with bolt throwers and longbows. Wiped the smirk off his face!

Offically this is an old forge world resin model I found in my attic.

Unoffically I'm slightly worried I overcooked the scaling aiming for 8mm. It is slightly smaller than the Aeronautica Imperialis T-hawk and obviously dwarfs the woefully underscale but beautiful 1997 metal t-hawk. (Very pretty model but its hull is narrower than a rhino...)

Going to get a White Scars paint scheme because I'm not prepared to rob my old Crimson Fists army to equip my new force!

But airplanes, because gotta go fast!

Paint progress, lots still do do!
