Space volves vs Eldar, 500pts, recon
« on: May 16, 2005, 11:02:33 AM »

The 4'x4' map was dominated by a huge terraced mountain in the center.
There were various other rock piles and pieces of cover around that.

Eldar:
Farseer with estorm , CCW
6 fire dragons + exarch upgrade + firepike
10 defender guardians, in wave serpent with stones and TL scatter lasers
6 defender guadians + scatter laser platform and crew

Space Wolves:
10 gray hunters in a rhino
4 long fangs, 3 with missile launchers, sargeant with plasma pistol
6 scouts, one with missile launcher, others with sniper rifles.

There was some disagreement as to whether the scouts should be able to fire their
heavy weapons on the round they came into play. In the end it didnt affect the battle,
but if anyone has an opinion on this please state it.

Space wolves won deployment. The game was escalation, so he chose to only place
his long-fangs. He places them fairly far forward to the right side of the large mountain.
The eldar player placed his scatter laser guardians near his board edge, tucked behind
a rock for some cover. The farseer joined the fire dragons at the base of the mountain,
and as close as possible to the longfangs pack.

TURN 1

Eldar win initiative.
the farseer and dragons burst out from ther hidden position to close on the longfangs.
The farseer nails the with a estorm, but kills none. The longfangs pass their pinning test.
The firepike misses, and the rest of the dragons are out of range. The scatter lasers
guardians miss all shots as well.

The longfangs, on their turn, decide to fire frag at the dragons. The first rocket destroys
no less that four dragons, the other rockets leave the exarch standing net to the farseer.
( all saves were failed :( ) plasma is out of range.

TURN 2
Reserves roll is failed for the wave serpent.
The farseer and exarch move up. towards the long fangs, the guardians stay put.
The scatter laser causes two wounds, but both are saved. The firepike kills one
long fang, and the space wolf player decides to remove the sargeant. Estorm
is useless again, leader ship and pining tests are passed.

The space wolf scouts pack arrives, and it decides to appear directly behind the
guardian defenders. The forgo shooting their heavy weapons, while the long
fangs  shoot three crack missiles at the farseer and exarch duo. The exarch
goes down, but the farseer resists the missiles.

In assault two space wolf scouts are slain by the guardians, and 4 guardians go
down. Their morale holds.

TURN 3
The eldar mechanized infantry arrives on the battlefield. It moves forward over
the guardian melee, and unloads its troops within firing range of the remaining
longfangs. The farseer scabbles over some terrain, to get close to them as well.
Estorm kills an amazing two long fangs, and the last man is pinned. But the
scatter laser picks off the last long fang leaving the guardians with noone to
shoot at.

Assault goes poorly for the guardians, who lose 2 more of their number, but their
morales holds firm.

The gray hunters arrive in their rhino, but decide to start all the way on the left side of
the board- hoping to get into the eldar deployment zone without fighting too much.
the zoom 12" forward. The scouts finish off another guardian, leaving only one
gunner. He stands firm.

TURN 4:
The guardans pile back into their serpent, which hops behind the far side of the mountain
The farseer heads towards to ongoing melee, hoping to relieve the last brave guardian.
He then FoF's behind some cover. The wave serpent takes a long range shot at the rhino
through some cover, but fails to penetrate its armor.

In assault, the last guardian manages to survive another round, killing nothing.

The Rhino moves another 12", approaching the recon victory objective. In assault,
the last guardian finally dies, the scouts consolidate deeper into the eldar
deployment zone.

TURN 5

The farseer moves out of cover, to get LoS on the scout pack.
The Wave serpent hops right onto the mountain, with LoS to the Rhino.
The farseer casts his estorm, to no effect whatsoever. The serpents
riddles the rhino with scatter laser fire, netting 3 glances and one
penetrating hit. The gray hunters lose one of their number in the explosion.

Now entagled, they do nothing, while the scouts fire at the farseer.
They manage to wound him with a sniper shot, but the krak missile
fails to penetrate his psykic defenses.

TURN 6

The farseer moves closer to the scouts, now within charging range.
The wave serpent hops into the space wolf deployment zone.
The farseer kills two scouts with his estorm, but they are not pinned.
Now they are no longer scoring, and cannot net the objective.
The wave serpent picks off one more gray hunter with its lasers.

The farseer charges the scouts, but they easily finish him off.

The gray hunters cannot move far enough to become completely
within the eldar deployment zone, so the game ends here.

The spaces wolves were ahead in kills, but the eldar player ekes out
a narrow victory with the 125pts award for the objective, because his
wave serpent is within the enemy  deployment zone while the wolf
scouts are no longer scoring.
