The El'lahaun Campaign (Updated: 10/31/09)
« on: October 12, 2009, 04:57:56 PM »
Harro folks!

The school year has been off to a spiffy start, and in my constant struggle against mediocrity, I have decided to participate in a several-month escalation campaign that's going to be hosted by a LGS in my area. So far, the organizer has decided the campaign should last late October to early December, giving us locals a good month and a half to hack it out.

The campaign is going to be fought over the following premise, as posted on the organizers site;

"A long time ago, longer now than it seems, the world of El'Lahaun was
a lush paradise.  It's location known only to a few, this precious gem
amongst so much interstellar flotsam and jetsam.  Those who were once
known as the Necrontyr called it home, and built a vast network of
tombs and caves into the ancient rock formations.  It was here they
discovered a most curious artifact, resonating in that psychic
frequency those without souls are not privy to, and by chance of fate,
activated it.  Their lord, Anakharis, could discern no function to
this item and cast it aside, becoming just another trinket in his
collection from around the galaxy.

The lush beauty and teeming biome proved to be too great a lure for
another...the vast Hive Fleet Vestis had broken through this corner of
the galaxy, light years ahead of its brothers, eyes focused hungrily
on this feast before it.  Years of fighting erupted, as Tyranid
monstrosities stalked the jungles and devoured all they could find,
while the golden skeletons of the Necrons emerged from their tombs to
defend their resting place.  It was only after the direct intervention
of Anakharis and his newly harvested pariah wardens that they were
able to sever the hive-mind link and push back the tyranids to the
northern wastelands.  With their enemy sufficiently corralled, the
Necrons withdrew into their tombs deep in the heart of the planet to
rebuild and wait for the great awakening to occur.

--011.M42--
A human expedition has discovered this once forgotten planet, and has
set up colonies on it.  Due to the vast natural resources, they have
rapidly spread across a great area, but troubling matters have
arisen.  Those who are warp-sensitive complain constantly of headaches
and nightmares of a dark choir casting a voice out into the void and
disturbing reports of homesteads on the periphery vanishing, and of
wild animal attacks that have left people horribly mauled still
trouble the populace.  Requests for aid have been sent out, and the
Iimperium, eager to secure so rich a world, has responded, but they
are not the only ones who have noticed the shifting below the sands of
the great deserts and the ripples in the warp..."

Each player will be signing up with a single army of their choice to participate in the battle for El'lahaun. The overall event will happen over a series of phases; each specifying exactly what each faction will be working towards, and the results of the last determining what events occur in the next and so on. The final phase will be a massive apocalpyse battle between all remaining factions!

Players will be fighting over a series of territories, outlined by a planetary map. Point limits will be set for each territory, denoting its importance to the overall campaign (IE less important battles will be fought with less points). However, bonuses will be given to players for controlling certain territories or meeting certain criteria; so far, this means a % point cap bonus for your army if you either control a certain territory, or if you bring particular units (some territories favor heavy support, for instance). Territories will be fought over and controlled Shogun Total War style.

As an added stipulation, each player must pick a designated HQ choice to serve as his armies commander. This Commander will be required to participate in some battles, notably any that directly relate to the progress of the campaign. The choice cannot change throughout the campaign (if you pick marneus you can't switch to cato later), but may enter battle with different wargear options if allowed (if you take a Captain with one set of equipment, you may take him with a different set for the next battle; but you may not take a chapter master).

***

I decided that I wanted to start a progress report on this campaign for two reasons; 1) I've never done anything like this before, 2) It sounds fun as hell. In addition, the organizer is doing certain things that would make the campaign really fun to follow. There's going to be a large planetary map that's going to be updated regularly as the battles unfold. In addition, all the boards for the territories are going to be pre-made, meaning drawn up on paper and posted as a PDF file. This makes it really easy for me to write up battle reports because digital cameras are difficult for me to get ahold of, and you'll at least have some idea what I'm talking about as I describe the battles.

And as an interesting note, as we all know the Space Wolf codex has just begun cutting its teeth, and there is at least one confirmed wolf player thats going to be playing in the campaign. If anything this even can serve as a gauge as to how well wolfs will fare in the long run (so you wolf fanatics out there, pay attention!).

I will be, of course, taking along my bumbling but lovable Moon Knights, led by the stalwart Captain Badass (lesser known as Jonathan Cassiel, as the official name for the narrative). As of right now, there are over 20 players signed up for the campaign, so unfortunately it will be impossible for me to cover every battle that takes place on the face of El'lahaun, but you can bet that I'll be tracking my own progress, and if not giving a full-scale report on a major battle that decided the fate of a massive territory, then at least giving minor updates over who controls which smaller territories, any small gains that I've made in the campaign, etc. You can also count on seeing the large territory map with the names of the armies that control them, as well as updates to the overall story and the different battles described in the league.

I don't expect my next update to be until the campaign is underway, so until then you'll have to wait on more specific story elements pertaining to the first phase.

Wish me luck!

Hello again!

It's taken a bit longer than I thought for the LGS to get the campaign underway, so I've decided to post a minor update just to keep you guys interested. This is directly from the organizer's post (with the names of the players omitted).

Okay guys, here's the breakdown for the League.  The players will be
divided into seperate factions based on their armies 'storyline'.  The
four groups are:

--Protectorate--
These represent the imperial forces already on the planet, or those
coming to their aid.  The players assigned to this faction are:

576th Kordian (Imperial Guard)
Ryujin Legion (Space Marines)
Space Wolves
19th Hadratus Legion (Renegade Legion)

--Aggressor--
These are the forces that are hear with an agenda that extends little
beyond conquering and fighting.  El'Lahaun is a resource-rich world
ripe for the picking and the battle on the horizon promises a good
fight for it.  Players assigned to this faction are:

Iron Warriors (Chaos)
WAAAAGH! Biggrin (Orcs)
Dameons
Dracos Brood (Tyranids)
Hive Fleet Orochi (Tyranids)

--Investigator--
Armies that are here to investigate (duh) the rumors of the chaos
artifact as well as the recent Necron activity in the area.  Players
assigned to this faction are:

(Chaos Marines)
Craftworld Revan (Eldar)
Shan'Al Cekayun (Tau)
Space Marines (Moon Knights)
Embar's Troupe (Eldar)

--The Reclaimers--
These are the armies that I will be playing, the ones that were there
first who are trying to throw off the invasion.

Hive Fleet Vestis (Tyranids)
Tombworld El'Lahaun (Necrons)

The faction that you are playing will determine which missions you
will fight at particular territories.  Members within a faction may
find themselves in situations where they are fighting against each
other as well; there are mysterious forces at work on El'Lahaun and
not everything, or everyone, is as it seems.

The first two weeks will be 500pts.  This will essentially be the
'seating chart', as games are played I will seat players onto the
territory map.

Please keep replies to this topic about faction assignments and
related issues.

In order to start off the campaign properly, the organizer decided to have a bit of a primer in order to decide who starts at which territory, rather than pre assign them. For the first two weeks, players will duke it out over a series of 500 point matches, and depending on how well he does in those, will decide which players start where on the world map. As these are pretty small matches and don't necessarily have an impact on the overall campaign, I will omit reporting these and rather update after the two weeks are over.

As you can see, I've been assigned to the investigator faction. I want to wait and see what the first "official" missions will be like before I make an official write up for the Moon Knights plotline, but for now I can say that they're there because they have a bone to pick with the Necrons.

I'll be sure to update as time goes on!

This looks like an interesting campaign.

I am planning on starting a Planetary Empires campaign myself soon, but I doubt I will manage to spare the time for a fully detailed Narrative.

Anyway, good luck, and I look forwards to seeing how you progress

As will the others, I will try to keep up on this interesting story-line.

Can you give us a link to the LGS website so we can see the maps, etc?

New Update!

The campaign has officially started!

All three factions are making planet fall, and are now competing for a position on the global map! The beginning scenarios have been laid out, point values assigned, special rules initiated, etc. So without further ado...

***

All of these missions will follow these rules:

-4'x4' table setup
-500pt Army Lists
-You do not need to bring an HQ, though you may have one if you wish
-You must have at least one Troop choice
-Dice off to see whose mission you are playing (highest roll is the
mission you play_
-No models with more than 2 wounds
-No models may have better than a 3+ armor save
-No vehicles with combined armor vaule above 33 (Add front, side &
rear)
-You may challenge any number of times, though you may not play the
same opponent more than once (for the league, you can play as much for
fun as you want. lol).
-Please post your results in the "Escalation League Starting Scenarios
Resluts" topic.

--Protectorate Mission: Planetfall Interception--
You have encountered a rival faction attempting planetfall, you must
attempt to keep them from gaining ground in this area.

-Dawn of War Deployment.
-Protectorate player has first turn (if both players are protecterate,
dice off to see who is attacker/defender, highest roll picks).
-Defending player places one objective in thier deployment zone.  It
may not be within 12" of a table edge.
-Player who controls the objective (within 3" at end of game) wins the
scenario.  In case of tie or no claims, player with most points left
on the table is the winner.

--Investigator Mission: Searching for a Clue--
Shuttle craft from the main fleet have landed in the area to look for
clues to the whereabouts of the mysterious artifact.

-Pitched Battle Deployment
-Dice off for first turn
-Each player places an objective, these may not be placed in a players
deployment zone, within 12" of a table edge, another objective, number
these Data Cache 1 and 2.
-Players earn one point for each killpoint earned, and one point for
holding an objective.
-After the game ends but before victor is determined, roll a die:
1-2 Data Cache #1 has very accurate information and is worth 2 points
instead of 1.
3-4 Data Cache #2 has very accurate information and is worth 2 points
instead of 1.
5-6 Neither data cache was very useful and is worth no additional
points (just the 1 for holding it).

--Aggressor Mission: You're in for a Surprise!--
You have encounterd an enemy patrol, wipe them out before they make it
back to their base and warn their companions of your location.

-Pitched Battle Deployment
-Aggressor has first turn (if both players are the same faction, dice
off as normal)
-Annihilation scoring rules.
-Any defender units that make it to the attacker's table edge may be
removed from play and a kill point awareded to the defending player
(since these units have successfully escaped the ambush).

--Reclaimer Mission: Rumors from Below--
This is a special scenario that can only be played with me (the
reclaimer army) here at the store.

***

This period of the phase will last until next Sunday. In case you missed it, you can only "officially" play against any single opponent once, though there is no limit to how many opponents you can play. I plan on getting my first game in this weekend, and I'll see where it goes from there.

My first battle report is going to take me a bit to write up, since I want it also has to be the primer as to why my army is participating in the campaign. I didn't want to start writing it until I saw the missions so it made some kinda sense.

Check back for updates!

Escalation Caimpaign Phase 1 Results: Landfall

(players/mission/victor)

Ryujin Legion vs. Waaggh! Biggrin; Planetfall Interception; Ryujin Legion

Waaggh! Biggrin vs. Chaos Daemons; You're in for a Surprise; Chaos Daemons

Craftworld Revan vs. Moon Knights; Searching for a Clue; Craftworld Revan
Needless to say I was taken a little off guard. Josh took some aspect scorpions, and although I was equipped to deal with them, I had no idea how well they performed in CC. The game breaker came when I had a choice of charging a guardian squad, or rapid firing and getting charged by scorpions. Like an idiot I did the latter. I was wiped off the board shortly thereafter.

Craftworld Revan vs. Embar's Troupe; Searching for a Clue; Craftworld Revan

Embar's Troupe vs. Shan'Al Cekayun; Searching for a Clue; Embar's Troupe

Craftworld Revan vs Shan'Al Cekayun; Searching for a Clue; Craftworld Revan

Space Wolves (Will) vs Iron Warriors (pre heresy); You're in for a Surprise!; Space Wolves

Moon Knights vs. Hive Fleet Lovesthedick; Searching for a Clue; Hive Fleet Lovesthedick
Another case of inexperience on my part. Apparently warriors are very good in close combat, and if equipped right can charge 12" into an assault. Both of my tactical squads got tied up early, although both tanks I took survived the whole fight. We tied up in KPs, so he won via the tie breaker (victory points).

Moon Knights vs. Space Wolves (not Will); Searching for a Clue; Moon Knights
The other player was new to Space Wolves, so he hadn't quite gotten over the whole "they're really not all that invincible" thing. I, on the other hand, had been playing against the SWs for several games now, and have learned their tricks. I caught a unit of long fangs dead to rights out in the open. Afterwards I charged a grey hunter pack with both of my tactical squads. I won handily, 2 points over the other guy.

Player Summary (Wins: Planetfall Interception/Searching for a Clue/You're in for a Surprise!)

Protectorate
Ryujin Legion: 1/0/0
Space Wolves (Will): 0/0/1
Space Wolves (not Will): 0/0/0

Investigators
Craftworld Revan: 0/2/0
Moon Knights: 0/1/0
Embar's Troupe: 0/1/0
Shan'Al Cekayun: 0/0/0

Aggressors
Waagh! Biggrin: 0/0/0
Chaos Daemons: 0/0/1
Hive Fleet Lovesthedick: 0/1/0
Iron Warriors (pre heresy): 0/0/0

Ryujin Legion vs. Waaggh! Biggrin; Planetfall Interception; Ryujin Legion

Waaggh! Biggrin vs. Chaos Daemons; You're in for a Surprise; Chaos Daemons

Aggressors
Planetfall Interception:     0/1
Searching for a Clue:       0/0
You're in for a Surprise:   1/1
Rumors from below:        0/0

Are you sure this is correct?  From the above, it appears that the Ork player lost both games he played.  How did he both win and lose the "You're In For A Surprise" scenario?  :-\

Both the Chaos Daemons and Waaggh! Biggrin are part of the same faction (the Aggressors), so if they go head to head, a win is pretty much going to equal a loss as well, so there's no actual gain for the faction.

I'm not sure how this is going to mean anything in the long run, so I'm just keeping track of it to stay consistent. I might end up tracking individual player scores as well to make it clear that a gain is being made somewhere.

!!!!UPDATE!!!!

The first round of results are in! Please check the results box to see how its going!

All the summaries are very basic, saying only who played who and then who won, with the exception of the matches I've played, which I VERY BRIEFLY summarized in italics (I'm writing a battle report on my fight against the Space Wolves). A few things to note; for one, you might notice some armies have names listed next to them, notably the Space Wolves. Those players haven't given names for their armies yet, or haven't registered with the organizer, but are still going to be part of the league. You might also notice that the investigator scenario is being played alot. That's just how its being rolled, and alot of the active players right now are the investigators anyway.

I also changed the format of the results summary. The factions only determine which scenarios the players play. I'm now tracking the player's wins in each scenario individually. Losses don't play a role in this campaign (at least not yet, I don't think), so I'm not tracking those.

Players right now are still fighting over the "seating chart" for the actual campaign (how well they do now determines where they get to start on the main map). Please lemme know if anything is un clear.
