my 'nid army (for now)
« on: August 4, 2006, 12:26:37 PM »
I've started 'nids a while ago and I now have a boxed
set of gaunts, a boxed set warriors and the 'nids that
came with the battle for maccrage set.
I'm planning on buying a battleforce and about 40
euro's worth of other stuff, but I don't know what to
get. I was thinking about zoanthrope(s), ravener(s) and/
or lictor(s). For a 1000 pts. list, what would be the best
purchase? And of course it needs to fit within my 1500
pts. list

here's my 1500 pts. list:
Hive Tyrant                                         113 pts
-Adrenal Gland (+1 WS)
- Toxin Sacs
- Toxic Miasma
- 2x Scything Talons

2x Tyrant Guard                                    90 pts

3x Warriors                                           93 pts
-Enhanced Senses
-Extended Carapache
-Deathspitter
-Scything Talons

3x Warriors                                            93 pts
Same as the previous warriors

1x Lictor                                                  80 pts

12x Hormagaunts                                    132 pts
- Adrenal Gland (+1 I)

12x Hormagaunts                                     132 pts

11x Termagaunts                                      66 pts

11x Termagaunts                                      66 pts

12x Termagaunts                                      72 pts

2x Raveners                                               80 pts
- Scything Talons
- Rending Claws

2x Raveners                                               80 pts
Same as previous

2x Zoanthrope                                           130 pts
- Synapse Creature
- Warp Blast

2x Carnifex                                                 272 pts (136 each)
-Enhanced Senses
-Venom Cannon
-Scything Talons

I'm also not sure if this list is good enough, I feel it
may be lacking a really hard punch. Any suggestions or
comments? I was thinking about maybe putting some
genestealers in, because I'll be owning 14.

The Hive Tyrant and  guard will have no long-range capability, so I don't think your opponent will target them early on.  I would have the Hive Tyrant alone on foot, or with 1 guard at the most to shave off some points other areas.

The Carnifexes could upgrade the scythings talons to TL-Devourers, and still stay pretty cheap.  This would give them a heck of an anti-tank punch on lower armour values, and also be a problem for any infantry that are nearby.

Two units of 1 Ravener are much better than a unit of 2 of them.  Split one of the units up, and consider getting 3 units of 1 each (dropping 1).

If you've dropped 1 or 2 guard, and a ravener, bring in the Genestealers.  They are too awesome to not be used.  :)

If you buy the battleforce, and plus what you already have, you are short 1 Carnifex, the Zoanthropes, the Hive Tyrant, the Lictor and the Raveners: 706 pts worth.  So you need 200pts or so to get up to 1000pts.  I would buy the Hive Tyrant, and field some genestealers to bring them up to 1000pts.  You will be a bit lacking in anti-tank shooting.  You could always give the Hive Tyrant a Venom Cannon to make up for it at this point level.  Later on when you get your zoanthropes and other carnifex, you won't have to worry about it.

For Hive tyrants there are mainly two options a) take guards meaning he is slow on foot and is better equipped with guns or b) don't take guards and make him CC with wings to get him there as fast as possible (there is also the double twin-linked devourer winged hive tyrant...which seriously owns but is tricky to use)
So think about what you want him to do, equip him and unleash the beast!  ;)

When making ranged warriors either twin-link their guns or give them rending claws instead of scything talons, those thing are much deadlier than an extra attack.
Not many people use lictors any more... I like them, give them a try.
Hormagaunts and termagants look good.

Just as Scalu said, split the raveners in two but use them as one, go after the same targets etc... they are amazing....
Zoanthropes are good, but their BS keeps them from being amazing so taking two is much better...which is pretty logical actually  :P
The most effective carnifex against tanks is a ranged one with only ES, VC+BS... and that's about it... but for troops and whatnot double twin-linked devourers are pretty good and they can also penetrate certain tanks. I have the anti-tank one, the anti infantry one and a CC one. The anti tank has never died on me but has also done the least damage during battles (but does take out vital targets). The anti-infantry is (for me) the most effective one, the low BS of the fex is less of a factor with that many shots which you can re-roll and you can destroy tanks if needed...solid choice and can be taken as elite!
My CC carnifex always goes on a rampage and has his share of killings but always dies in the end...still doing more then my long ranged fex actually.... :-\

I would take the suggestion of Scalu and put in some genestealers... even a group of 8 is deadlier in CC than 2 or more squads of marines (talking CC only here  :P)

Also, if you have lots of stealers then you might want to buy a Broodlord... if that thing gets in CC...whatever it is, it'll be dead even against another CC kitted Hive Tyrant. So powerfull it's scary  ;D
Sorry to say... but you'll get bitten when you click... I warned you!

I think I'll drop the guards and one ravener as you said.
Instead I'll put in some genestealers, they'll add more
punch to my CC and it's also cheaper for me to take
them  :P

I first wanted to put rending claws on my warriors but
I wouldn't have enough rending claws to put on them.
I can now use the claws from the genestealers I won't
use and put them on the warriors.
They come with the battleforce anyway and then I can
use the rending claws from the MC's to put on the
raveners.

@ Scalu
I'll think about putting TL-devourers on the carnifex,
that would make him more versatile in shooting and
much more deadly to low armoured vehicles.
He probably won't do that much in CC anyway, but
I was also thinking about looks. I just can't picture a
carnifex without claws....

@ Hybrid-9
is there also an option c) ?  :P Would it be usefull to
have the tyrant without guards but tooled for CC?
I don't want to give him wings, it costs quite a lot of
points and it will probably be very difficult to transport.
I like the tyrant the way it is now and it could be
usefull, arriving after the bulk.

of course you could make a CC tyrant without wings  :D and that's all up to your own preferences but that kind of tyrant is just a little too slow to be a huge threat... but then again you save a lot of points that way!
Try out whatever you want to try and if it works for you then good to know, but keep trying something new to keep your army fresh  ;)
