KoN BFG Necron Raiders Vs Ork Fleet 1000pts
« on: October 22, 2010, 11:16:07 AM »
So, getting my Necron BFG fleet kicking into gear,in my second ever game. My first was not to long before this one, against the Dark Eldar fleet. needless to say, Necrons are quite good against eldar fleets.

My Fleet consisted of..

Two Scythe Class harvester ships, one Shroud class light cruiser, one squadron of three dirge class raiders, and three separate jackal class raiders.

The Ork fleets (of which I am unsure what is what) consisted of two squadrons of two kill krooza cruisers, One Death Dealla battleship, one brute ram ship.

There was no celestial phenomenon, as we played this as a quick game before the shop closed.

The beginning of the game, saw his fleet head towards mine in a solid clump line, with the Brute in the lead, and the two Kroozer squadrons in the flanks. I sent my Dirges to outflank on his right, while the Jackals did the same on the left. My Crusiers adjusted their movement to move through his lines, heading to the left.

I withstood some minimal damage before I was able to start shooting proper (a couple hits lost on one scythe, as well as a critical, and one Jackel shot out of the sky). My Scythes opened up with their Star Pulse generators, eliminating the Kroozers sheilds (after a few hits) and then with their Particle Whips and Lighting Arcs managed to cripple one of the Kroozers, while the other suffered an extreme critical hit and exploded, killing another of my Jackels and causing heavy damage on my scythes and his Death Dealla battleship and crippled Kroozer. His Brute Ram was easily annihilated by the explosion as well.

His remaining fleet then turned to their starboard, blasting weapon batteries at my wounded Scythe, crippling it and turning it into a drifting flaming hulk. The rest of the game saw my Shroud and Scythe try to flank around the back of his force, crippled, while the escorts fired at, and damaged his other Kroozer squadron. We basically traded pot shots at each other, crippling a few of each others ships. (The Kroot are the Death Dealers bomber Squadrons).

We had to end the game early, due to the store closing. However, at the end the battlefield as very close, however due to my scythe getting destroyed, I lost out on Victory points (Necron ships are worth 300%vp if left as drifting hulks). However, we were both still learning the game, but after the couple of games at the store today, more people are picking up fleets to play at our GW. Should be fun.

Quite the triumph for the Orks considering that those two fleets are probably one of the more uneven match ups in BFG. I think it is always a good idea to contain some celestial phenomena, at least some dust clouds or something, just because it helps to break up the battle a bit, forcing some manoeuvring on the fleets but it does get in the way of learning a bit. It sounded like the Ork player really took a pummelling while your damages were minimal, lucky him that your Scythe became a drifting Hulk, I wager if it would have continued you would probably have more or less destroyed his fleet. The Ork fleet look quite interesting, any chance of any close ups or descriptions on what they are?

To be honest, It was not all that in my favor this game.

In the end, both of my remaining cruisers were crippled, while all his ships (bar the one I shot at and lived) were still above half hit points. My escorts were still kicking around though, but the Orks hit me really hard, as well as the exploding ship.

Mostly this may be due to my inexperience at the game, I am still learning it (as are the others in the group). My previous game we used a few planets and an asteroid belt, but in this one we just didn't have a lot of time, thus made it as simple as we could. Pretty much drop and go sort of game.

I love BFG; its a great game that can be a lot of fun. I suggest aiming to get a campaign running if you can as thats where the game really shines.

As an aside, you're generally required to squadron up escorts if possible so you shouldn't have three seperate Jackals. I think you're allowed a lone escort if you only have one escort in your whole fleet* but he then gets a 'no friends' leadership penalty. I like the paint job and good conversions by the ork player too.

*(and sometimes in the privateer skirmish variant which isn't really relevant)

Nice to see gothic going - and doubly nice to see da orks making a showing.

Oddly, despite usually being picked on as a weak fleet, they're one of the best things to take on necrons with - necrons lack bombers (the ork's key weakness), and rely on hit points, not shields (so your particle whips are less scary than they might be). Deathdeala is a -ing awesome warship, with bombardment cannons something a shield-less necron fleet can't ignore.

Generally, try to avoid going 'up the centre' with necrons against orks. Your ships are just too expensive, his armour is as good as yours (on the front), and once things get close, 'eavy gunz will make a right mess of you.

You did the right thing, peel off to one flank and try to hold the range open, but you need to focus more on that - starpulses and lighting arcs don't add enough extra damage potential to justify letting the enemy return fire with gun batteries and bombardment cannon - if you can stick in the 30-60cm bracket, you'll win.

Of course, that won't hold for some fleets. Certainly don't try it against chaos, as they can get heavy lance power for far fewer points.
