The Coliseum (Game-Thread)
« on: January 29, 2013, 06:53:13 AM »
Thump, thump, thump. The loud stamp of boots slamming on ceramite echoed through the underground network below the coliseum. Millions of booted feet stomped in the grandstands as the crowds roared and cheered, booed and jeered at the gladiators in the centre of the sand covered arena. The mobile hovering cameras zoomed around the fighters as they in turn circled each other; one was a heavily scarred un-armoured astartes, his physique so huge as to be inhuman, the other a large greenskin, both wore only leggings covering to just below their knees, tattered and torn from hard wear, blood leaked in crimson drabs from numerous cuts on their bodies. The Astartes carried a brutal serrated combat knife in one hand and a combat shield strapped to his other, the Orc carried a pair of axe shaped choppas.

With a guttural roar the orc lashed left and right trying to cut the annoying astartes to shreds, they’d been battling for over twenty minutes and the crowd was starting to turn on their champion. Soon the entire mass of fans would be cheering on this pathetic over grown humie. The marine continued his agile dance around the brutal green humanoid avoiding devastating blows that would tear right through him if they landed, and with a lightning-like blow the fight was done. The marine’s hand shot out, jamming his knife up to the hilt in the greenskin’s chest and slamming the full force of his body behind the shield and directly into the orc’s face. Kraga the Mighty, Champion of Taroque IV’s renowned arena fell unconscious to the arena floor. Within minutes medical crews had arrived to carry the wounded orc away for treatment and media crews had arrived to congratulate the new champion, Captain Tarik Vaughn.

Deep in the bowels of the arena three new fighters, their hands still cuffed were seated in a dank cell, each seated against a separate wall on a bench that was no more than a ceramite extension of the wall. One was an orc, though not as large as Kraga he held all the savage brutality of his kind and may one day reach such epic proportions as the former champion. The next was a human man of impressive physique, he was not of the astartes like Tarik but all the same he dwarfed all lesser men. The final cell occupant was the only female, a member of the Dark Eldar, a Wych, the only one of the three to be wearing a shirt, torn and worn as it was. Before them, in the centre of the room stood a human man, well into his fifties he nonetheless held a bearing of strength, the kind only seen in those who have delivered a life time of hard work and bore the scars to prove it. He had aged gracefully, his white hair trimmed short and his full beard flowing down his chest.
“Well you’ve seen it and now you’ll be part of it, you each represent a large investment on my part and I would see it returned, you will each fight tonight before the crowd, you will learn what it is like, not to kill for you already know this, but what it is like to be cheered for doing it. Beat your opponent and the crowd will love you for it, and perhaps in time, you will come to love them for it. Fight like champions and champions you will become, and earn your freedom. I’m sure it came as a shock that you’d become no more than slaves upon signing that form but here you are. I don’t necessarily agree with it but that doesn’t mean I’ll coddle you, tonight all fights are Ad gladiatum essentially your opponents are criminals sentenced to death, end their lives and you will be proud fighters of the house of Unor, fail and your blood will wet the sands.” The speech sent chills up the spines of the guards, the old man raised a hand and gave a loud click with his thumb and middle finger soon a group of people entered and began to undo the manacles and present each fighter with their weapons of choice. “Now any questions before I send you to your destiny?” Old man Unor asked.

"Yes" said Lithe in her drawl voice "how long till I get a chance to spill some blood? after all, isn't that what we are here for?"

Agreed, also how long do you want us to make these wretches squirm, do you want an efficient routine or should we drag this out for the cameras? " the Mordian inquired, gauging the balance of the sword in his hands, it would do nicely.

Old man Unor appraised them all with a curious eye before giving a brief nod, “Make it quick, these are merely prisoners sentenced to death, if it takes too long the crowd will begin to turn on you and that is not a good thing.” He gestured the human man over first, “Flavius, your victim is Caius Tratus, he is convicted of harbouring a Genestealer cult within his living space, end his life and see your own exalted.”  With a flick of his wrist the old man showed a vid-display of the soon-to-be opponent, he was somewhat human, though mutations had begun to form, a second pair of arms sprouted just below the normal two and from each finger extended a long black talon, and razor sharp fangs jutted out of his upper lip, “He’s fast, do not let him get to you first.” The guards then grabbed the Mordian by the shoulders and forced him out of the cell towards his respective arena.

The Old man turned to the Dark Eldar, “Your assignment should bring some pleasure, his name is Captain Enura, an Eldar pirate, he is sentenced to death for raiding an outer-rim world.” Once more the holo-display shone to life, showing a tall Eldar male in simple garb and carrying a long, curved sword. “Do not under estimate him; he killed many enforcers before he was brought down.”

Flavius and Lithe are lead out to two separate arenas to meet their opponents.

Flavius stepped out into the arena for the first time, the noise, the light, the cries for blood, he could get used to this. But that was a thought for later when there wasn't a horrific mutant across from him. What he wouldn't do for a lasgun right now, one shot through the forehead, problem solved, but he didn't have that, he had a sword, a blunt tool to be used to achieve a goal. He raised the sword above his head in the falcon position ready to strike down onto the beast, aiming to remove two of the arms at once, whilst sweeping a leg to trip the beast, a complex move he had been taught in the academy to dispatch a charging opponent, now to see if it worked in this arena.

Lithe bares her teeth in what could have been a smile and makes her way into the arena. breathing in the death that permeates the arena, energy races through her. her opponents sword is suited to slashing, not stabbing. expecting a horizontal or vertical swing, Lithe plans to divert the strike with her daggers and follow with a round house kick, which will hopefully stun him long enough for her to finish off.

The old man looked to the orc with a sympathetic smile, “I’m afraid I could only get you one fight…the twins.” He gestured to the holo-slate and a hologram of two wild looking Tau warriors appeared, each was small of frame, but wiry muscles stood out on their gangly limbs. Each wore a woven kilt and possessed an array of large combat knives. “Out of my new recruits you are the only one who will fight actual gladiators, I’d rather you didn’t but it was the only fight offered and I believed you the only one capable of taking these particular opponents. Strike hard and fast and you will earn glory on the sands.” And with that the guards escorted the ork out of the cell, “May the Emperor finally grant me some bloody luck.”

Elsewhere the Mordian stood face to face with his mutant opponent. The fight started quickly with the mutant proving that the man had underestimated the speed of the Tyranids, even a malformed half breed such as this. Caius’ outstretched claw flashed, thankfully the new gladiator’s reflexes were sharp and the claws only grazed his chest, his own weapon sliced downwards removing two of the mutant’s limbs and a good portion of his shoulder. With a screech the creature thrashed around on the ground as great rivulets of its black blood and ichor leaked onto the sands. The crowd’s chant began, “Kill, kill, kill, kill!”

In the Eldar stocked arena Lithe was faring very well, the cocky Eldar pirate not taking the Wych seriously had paid for his error, not expecting the kick the male hadn’t even braced himself and in turn his leg shattered from the impact driving him down, the Wych now stood behind him with a handful of hair and a dagger pressed to his throat, her crowd starting their own chant.

The old man looked to his right where a much younger man surveyed the screens with him, “Not bad Grandfather, you may have struck gold here.” The old man grimaced.

“Careful boy, there’s at least one fight left yet.”

Ungkard’s blood started to boil and his thoughts began to race. He had no real previous fighting experience, but thousands of years of collective memory hammered at him. His predisposed nature urged at him to rip the two Tau apart. He gripped his choppa at a new thought… He started to charge and at the top of his lungs let out a horrific “Waaagh!”

He would start with the closest one, then move on to the next. He would use his axe to hammer down at them, not giving them time to defend themselves. If they went to block, he would trust in his orkish strength to overpower it.

Flavius cursed himself, to have been caught that off guard to have struck his torso like that, never mind it added to the theatricallity of it all, and the scars would serve to remind him of his failure, though he could swear he could hear his instructor sergeant screaming himself red in the face at insulting Flaviu's competency as a man and his right to bear this sword. But there was no time for such thoughts right now, there was still a job to finish. He decapitated the mutant with a strong double handed downward stroke of his sword sending blood spurting across the sands, he raised the sword the crowd
"I am Flavius, D company, 52nd regiment of the holy Emperor's Mordian Iron Guard and I offer this death to you the people!"
That ought to do it, he thought to himself and walked back towards the gate he had entered through, he was glad he didn't have to clean that mess up!

Lithe took her knife away from the man's throat and slide it, almost casually, into his spine between his shoulder blades, immobilising  him. Then, baring her teeth in that vicious smile of hers, bit into her victim's neck, ripping out his jugular and leaving him to bleed to death into the sand. She looked up at the crowd, bared her teeth, now glistening red with blood, at let loose a roar, an animalistic and feral noise. There was silence, the crowd stunned by what they had just witnessed. Then all of a sudden, the air filled with the earsplitting roar of the crowd, enthralled by the vicious and bloodthirsty event that had just taken place. As the crowd cheered and yelled, Lithe looked down at her opponent, who's eyes, the only thing he still had control over, darted around, wide open, as if unable to comprehend what had happened to him. Then, she turned and made her way out of the arena, the crowd still roaring behind her. in truth, she probably could have just killed him and been done with it, but the reputation of a blood thirsty psychopath was one she quite liked. Besides, the purist's blood had tasted magnificent........

The crowd roared in its blood lusting exultance. Millions of fans roared their approval to the Guardsman and Wych, the cries for more blood intensifying as the combatants made their way from the sands back to the underground network. Each was met by a pair of Guards who removed their weapons and manacled them once more, looking to the Mordian one of said guards gave him a wink, “Well fought mate, I put half of my wages on you.” The grinning guard gave him a slap on the back and sent him on his way.

Elsewhere old man Unor and his Grandson nodded appreciatively, “You do have an eye for the best Grandfather,” The boy acknowledged, “Will they be competing in league fights?” he pressed. The old man smiled benevolently at his favoured pupil.
“We shall see boy, we shall see.” Then all eyes turned to the orc’s fight, and it was not going as well as expected.

The Tau twins were quick, something the orc was not prepared for, his swings with his choppa were often far from the mark, one of the twins getting behind him and leaping onto his back. The smaller xenos’ teeth sank into the orc’s shoulder, a knife appearing in his hand and ramming down into the meat of his right bicep. The tau would not have it all their own way however as one of the mighty swings finally found its mark, stunning the small creature and sending it rolling across the sands.

The Ork took full advantage to one of his assailants being temporarily out of the picture. Like a wrestler from ancient Terra he jumped on his back to crush the Tau hanging on it. Once on the ground his enemy would not be able to escape, and he woudl rely on his strength to break its grasp and rip the blue skin menace apart. "Datz it ya weedy git. Im gonna kill ya good."

Flavius smiled at the guard who had spoken to him "I thank you for your confidence in me friend, I will seek to keep up your profit levels!" That seemed to get a laugh out of the man. "I ask you to look after that sword of mine, it was better than anything I could have hoped for when signing up to this! I would appreciate if it were cleaned and sharpened a bit before I next face the crowds. Also where can I go to get this thing strapped up a bit" he said nodding and the shallow wounds on his torso " I know its nothing serious, just you never know where that thing has been putting those claws and I would rather not rot in my sleep!" With that Flavius followed the guards instructions to receiving treatment of the medicae staff for the wound flushing it out with saline water, wrapping it tight in a sheath of tight white bandages then returning to his cell to get the rest his body so badly desired. On returning to the cell he saw the wych already sat in the cell "Hail, congratulations on your victory, as I'm presuming the losers rarely come back in this place. I find it crazy, our forefathers would have fought each other across the galaxy yet here we are, in the exact same situation! How did you find the roar of the crowd?"

Upon leaving the arena, Lithe was met by two guards, who promptly removed her weapons and manacled her. they glanced nervously at each other, then lead her back to her cell, always keeping out of arms reach. "Good" she thought to herself "my little show had the desired effect". she entered her cell, and had to wait only a short while for the human fighter to show up. he greeted her, clearly intending to start a conversation, but she was tired, and simply wanted to rest. "I do not make idle chit chat, mon-keigh, and I do not plan on befriending you because I may have to kill you in the foreseeable future." with that, Lithe walked over to one of the bunks in the room, laid down and closed her eyes. she was content to simply wait until her next fight.

Flavius was not surprised by the eldar's reaction in the slightest, but it never hurt to try and make an ally in a place such as this, but never mind, self reliance was an essential part of his training programme and he could handle himself happily. He followed the wytch's example and climbed into a bunk to sleep off the day's strains, and with that he settled into the deep dreamless sleep of a body trying to repair itself.

The fight with the twins and the Greenskin had ended just as the old man predicted, while the Tau had clearly been more skilled they had underestimated the sheer brute strength of the ork and been crushed for their efforts, resulting in a major defeat and the crowd chanting for their new found celebrity. It wasn’t long before the guards had him manacled and disarmed again and led him deep into the bowels of the arena, once there all three were loaded up onto an armoured transport bearing the seal of the Unor family, a sword crossed over a circular shield with an upward pointing V. “Stay quiet!” the overseer roared at them before locking the back hatch and sending them on their way, the old man simply sat at the head of the group shaking his head as he rested his hands on his walking stick.

“Always so rude, now it’s time you all learned about the Barracks,” he informed them, “The Barracks is where my gladiators live and train, it is your new home and you will come to love it, or it will drive you insane either way.” Unor told them with a grin, before nodding off.

They reached the barracks within an hour and were unloaded, they were met by a similar group of new recruits as they entered a large courtyard, sandy ground crunched underfoot as they were led in and un-manacled. “Well this is where I leave you in the capable hands of our chief instructor Regulus Ganus.” Unor told them before walking off and leaving them with an Astartes. The ex-space marine was at least eight feet tall and almost as broad as an orc; while he was unarmoured he wore a surcoat bearing the old heraldry of his former Chapter, The Sable Swords. He turned up his lip as he gazed at them; he noted the composition of the group, man, Dark Eldar, Ork, Eldar.

“Alright you lot follow me,” he called as he entered the building opposite the entry, “Okay the Barracks has six living areas and can house approximately three hundred gladiators, we have several dozen training rooms and one mess hall. The master does things a little differently than most, once the real fight season starts he will not just throw you into the arena, you have to earn the right to enter, to do so you have to earn ten points, you each earned two points for you victories today, you have six weeks to earn eight more before the season starts. In those six weeks you will eat, sleep and train, you will earn a hundred credits each week, you can use it for several things, first and foremost you can save it and when you earn enough can buy your freedom should you wish it, I have been informed that each of you are worth ten thousand credits so good luck with that one.” He muttered with a dark chuckle, “Next you can speak to Skippy,” he gestured to a thin, gangly young human with a nervous twitch, “He can get you any weapon or armour you wish or he can get booze and whores, he will also arrange for you to place bets on yourselves or your brothers, now any questions?”

To train under an astartes, it seemed impossible, these legendary warriors were littered throughout the histories of the 52nd Mordian, where a single space marine had fended off hundreds of foes. It took a moment to get over the initial awe at facing one of these living gods. The information he gave was also good news 100 credits a week alongside food and acommodation would mean a good life for as long as he kept himself alive.
"Thank you my lord astartes, I will not dissappoint you. I have but a few questions, when will we recieve out first payment? and how exactly do we earn these extra points, by training or is there another system?"

*INSERT GM RESPONSE*

"thank you"

With that Flavius turned to the man refered to as Skippy
"Greetings i have a few things i would like to purchase, when that is possible, a stub pistol and the combat fatigues of my company, i wish to face the arena dressed to honour my fore fathers. How much would these items set me back?"

*INSERT GM RESPONSE*

Flavius then headed into the barracks to select his bunk, so he could organise what few effects he had in his trunk and gain a couple of hours rest before setting about his personal training exercise he rembemred from his days in the regiment, they would keep his skills honed for the moment until such time as when his equiptment went beyond standard issue.

Ungkard made his way to the human called skippy. He was very upset about the heads of the two Tau he had ripped off being taken by his guards. But if this human could get anything, he should be able to get the heads back. Besides, the crowd seemed quite thrilled at him having taken the heads. They might like to see them hanging off his waist next time.

“Oi, skippy. Me Ungkard. I want me bloo eads back. Da ummie boyz took dem.” The ork spoke as if skippy should know what he was talking about. It could possibly be a long conversation. But if Ungkard had a mind for logistics, he might consider the potential publicity worth it.

Hyrulen looked at the scrawny human. Pathetic, he thought. "Just be sure my sword is good and sharp," he said. He then went to train. He didn't care for the astartes. Before the era of peace began, he had killed many of those brutes. He had his own training routine. He didn't need an astartes telling him what to do.
