'Wow, Look At That Army' Syndrome/DE, CE or Harlies?
« on: January 3, 2005, 06:44:46 AM »
im pretty sure im not the only one who can't stick with an army to save his life, having 2 1k point armies, one of which has many broken models and the other that constitutes a cheesy nid army (dont hate me, it was my first army  :'() and then several other pathetic attempts, all at 500pts +/-, thats chaos, eldar, dark eldar, space wolves and necrons

at first i tried writing quite a bit of fluff for the army i was collecting, for example my steel dragons at the moment aren't far off completeion, probably over 1k points but with lots of illegal units (damn my parents lack of knoweldege in warhammer) however im already thinking of dropping them and going back to eldar/DE or possibley starting harlequins

so i beseech you, honourary members of 40kOnline, for any ideas how to stick with an army to about 2kpts? (thats my target usually)

EDIT- thought i'd edit this rather than starting a new thread

i also beseech you for your opinions on which out of the following to start next : Craftworld Eldar (Biel-Tan or Alaitoc), Dark Eldar (Wych Cult or Kabal) or Harlequins

CWE- always liked the look of eldar, failed miserabley in collecting them last time though (made no fluff), problem i have is Biel-Tan seems overused and im not sure if a pathfinder/ranger heavy Alaitoc army

Dark Eldar- i LOVE their fluff and the whole idea behind them, problem here is that their transports arent very gd (bar the being able to assault from them part), also im not sure if wych cults are too limiting or not

Harlequins- look pretty cool, rules do too and shoudl be interestign to play, however expensive figures, im not a gd painter and they seem INCREDIBLY hard to play with

out of the three im leanign more towards DE as im hoping my love of their fluff could keep me there (the only reason i stopped was because of the comments i got when saying i wanted to try to convert an all female army)

(x2) thanks to all that reply ^_^

you need to have pride in the army you have, see them as a force as a whole rather than a group of individual models.
Write your fluff and give your characters and units names.
Play a campaign or two with them and add that into their fluff. Even little one-off games can develop your force's 'history'.
Give them funky quirks by specialising in a certain peice of equipment or troop type. Even if your force composition is pretty standard (like mine) you can still have funky stuff (i have some guardsmen nicknamed after 40kO members, while the normal names use Chinese and Korean ones)
Failing that, pretend your models have feelings. How would your force feel if you abandoned them to join the enemy?  ::)

If you want to get a new army, then just wait a month or two before you start to buy. Make an army list and play with proxy minis (or someone elses minis) to get a feel for them. If after all that, you still want the army, then plan your purchases and start the fluff writing process. Sometimes new army's cannot be resisted  :D

Cheers!

hmmm, i think i'll try the campaign idea, althoguh i think it's too late to save my Steel Dragons from being put into my tool boxes, i gues this means i'll ahve to actually go into the local store, only played games with friends, 2 have only just started and the other is loosing intrest

ive done character names, about 4 for my steel dragons (should be 5) 1 lib and 3 dreads (should be 4 dreads) and fluff before

as for the quirks, i think i'll giev that ago too, although ive still got to decide wether i should play CE (most likely Biel-tan), DE (wych cult) or harlies, although im leaning towards DE as i love their fluff (damn GW for their neglegence)

thanks for your reply ^_^

hehe... been there done that.
My Eldar army was a  'Wow, Look At That Army' and has taken quite some long time to build it up after I sold all the Second Ed minuatures I didn't like... but that is comming along fine ^_^

I think my Tau army is that kind of army aswell, though it took very short time to finish the basic (72 firewarriors bought cheaply toghether with 8 Crisis suits and Stealth suits+Codex) but then there are those thing in it that I don't have that would make it better (broadsides!) which costs allot. =/

Can't say this has happened to me.

Eldar. Variants being Ulthwé and Alaitoc, now possibly Saim-Han. And Necrons is what I have been limited to. All the other armies don't appeal to me.

Ugh - the painting.

Can't say I've been afflicted with this either.
I started playing with Blood Angels then switched to Space Wolves before I discovered the Eldar.
This was more me finding "my army" than "Wow, look at that!" I played a 2k Genestealer Cult as a second army for variation though.
This was during second edition before my gaming hiatus during 3rd. Now I've started playing again I'm back with Eldar as before. Couldn't imagine playing another race as a main army.

The point of all that crap: There must be one particular army that you share an affinity with? I expect you can identify with one particular race more than the others. Each race has a particular feel that is all their own.
It's ok to try out loads of armies, you'll find the one that fits you eventually.

Id go with the army you like the fluff and imagery the most with, so that would be DE. This would be the army that inspires you most.
My only problem with you collecting DE is that there might (hopefully) be some model changes in the not so distant future. If you have the resources for this or dont collect particularly quickly then it should be fine.

My other point remains however, id play with them using someone elses models or with proxies (and with Harlequins too if you think they are super hard to play with) before you buy a shed load.

If you decide on harlequins id try to do some conversions, harlequin armies are small enough that it is plausible, and it would work out cheaper if you can do something with the basic DE or CE kits (remember you can cast anything you mould yourself too).

I wouldnt go back to CE since you seem a bit hesitant with them, and a fresh start is probably a good thing.

Cheers!

well i have a few DE models lurking about somewhere too, although i got those before i decided what i wanted to do (damn parents) which is a wych cult, although im not particularily fond of the wych models and also as another way to try and stick with an army id probably try making it all female, last time i asked i was told using fantasy dark elf witches and converting them woudl be easier, as you get 1/3 and 2/5 female wyches in the blisters/box sets, that is unless you get the succubus

i do tend to get armies quickly, its a kind of lull in the storm when i dont get anything and then over a smalll period of time i get quite a lot ;D

thank you for your help ^_^
