DKK (forgeworld in general)
« on: January 18, 2021, 10:01:22 PM »
There is no point in forgeworld anymore, not only are my DKK dwindling to nothing, every army is losing models every other month.  FW might as well be a 30k site by now, does anyone have any inside knowledge of what the hell is happening with FW now (I doubt it) but I mean what is the point in that business anymore.  People buy models knowing they will soon stop making them or they'll frantically buy them before they stop making them.  I really can't imagine that 30k as is popular as it is.  I love me some space marines but its such a limited game/narrative and limited in that the only armies are really SM's (and I'm a SM player) its just boring to me.  The only models they release are 30k models or 30k models that can be used in 40k, such a depressing waste.

Death Korps of Krieg didn't really loose anything. Just anything which is in the Astra Millitarum codex (Like Infantry Squads), now just follow those rules. So, they lost specific datatsheets, but didn't loose any units. This is actually great for the army, as for years Death Korps of Krieg, due to all their specific datasheets were often left behind when the Astra Millitarum book was updated.

The other units not in the Forgeworld codex, are ones which are no longer in production. I know which sucks, but it's more fair for everyone if the rules reflect what you can buy. Limited inventory space, quality of molds, and other factors means that the companies cannot manufacture all kits indefinitely. For all those cases, there are Legends rules for all out of production kits. A lot of those kits which have been moved to legends, haven't been in production for years.

And yes, Forgeworld isn't focused on 40k anymore, it's focus is 100% on 30k and Specialist games. Has been that way since Alan Bligh died, who was the main creative lead for the company.

Maybe you have already described the purpose of Forgeworld in your post. You seem to imply that you were perfectly happy with Forgeworld when you could buy DKK models from them, but now that you can't you no longer see the point of them. So could the purpose of Forgeworld be to produce niche models that people will collect.

Personally I have never seen the point of Forgeworld. Expensive models that couldn't be used in a game without the permission of the other player (not sure if this is still the case). The whole 'pay to win' aspect of them. Also the fact they were resin always put me off.

Neither of those statements are correct. Forgeworld doesn't require permission to be used in games, as Games Workshop writes the rules for those units. The rules are also very much in line with the rest of the Games Workshop proper datasheets. They are very much just options now, perhaps more expensive, or collectors ones.

No I mean they are losing the physical models, most of the DKK catalogue is gone and models keep going away.

I don't see any difference in the line than they've had in the last few years. A lot is temporally sold out (probably due to COVID related production issues).

What is missing?

I wish that was true, probably a third or half the models have gone and it was way before COVID and the range is filled with Imperial Guard units that aren't specifically DKK.  Every other month a models goes and I really doubt they are changing the moulds as the models have been off the catalogue for years and the rate and consistency at which they are going being removed definitely doesn't suggest re-moulds.  DKK players have been talking about this for years.  I mean I really am not being unreasonable, I get that models will go and have experienced that but when you invest in so much money in an 'army' not just a few FW units, Its a seriously big deal, I can't add to my army with units I want, I have pick from the ever dwindling range.

Which kits are missing? I know the Infantry squad at ease is gone, but there are two others to choose from. It looks like most the original range still exists besides that, and the Leman Russ upgrade kits.

Thats fair. The two Age of Sigmar factions from forge world (Tamurkans horde, and legions of Azgor) are gone and last chance buy.

It's sad, I understand that. I also understand they can't keep everything for sale all the time as well. Their focus is specialty games, and if it doesn't sell well, and isn't one of those two things, it's lifetime is not guaranteed.

What I don't understand is that, why just waste all that capital, they could sell the rights or allow another company to make the models.  I mean some re-casts out there are nearly undiscernible from the FW casts and these are cheap factory companies in China etc.  They should license them out and allow them to sell to western markets.  GW want to keep the licenses in case in the future they will become popular again but if they aren't selling well now then they most likely won't in the future, its a complete waste on their part as it is on the consumers part.  The models might not sell as much as 30k but they will always sell and GW has invested so much in 30k that FW will end up as a 30k site and then they have a whole catalogue of wasted capital that they could still profit from.  Just seems insane to me.
