Keeping the We'll Be Back Roll [Broken HTML]

Submitted By: Date: May 31, 2006, 07:18:59 PM Views: 2259
Summary:
One of the most important aspects of the Necron army is to determine how many models you should put into a unit. The main reason for that is the way the Will Be Back rule works. Most enemies, if they are smart, will take on the Necron force as they should: They keep shooting at one unit until it's completely wiped out. If there is not other unit of the same type within 6 inch or there is no tombspider present within 12 inch(and another unit of the same type on the table), you cannot attempt WBB. Don't forget, the huge amount of points you pay for the models is because of the included WBB-Roll. Not being able to take advantage of it means you've wasted points.
Even if most of the information you find here is quite obvious, it's quite important to keep it in mind! You have no idea how many people use only one unit of 5 Immortals in a 2000 point game, or 2 Wraiths in a 1500 point game...

Warriors

Warriors have the ability to have huge numbers. You can max the units out to 20, but in most cases, I wouldn't bother. You must have 2 units of warriors at least, and most of the time, you keep them close together. Sometimes they will even be escorted by either a Lord with a Res. Ord or a Tomb Spyder as backup. If you put the warriors close together (or at least within 6"), I'd probably go with sizes between 10 and 15.

Immortals

In my opinion, Immortals are the Necrons "Shoot the masses" unit. Excellent range and enormous firepower make them an enemy not to take lightly. The enemy will try to take them down. 5 Just isn't enough, especially when your using them together with the Lord + Veil. Their T5 makes them very tough to kill, but you're also paying a lot of points for them. I'd always take 7 to 10 models per unit.

Flayed Ones

Flayed Ones are your units who take out the enemy "Behind the Lines", such as snipers or artillery units. Being able to infiltrate them makes the enemy scared. Most of the time, the target units will be a squad of 3 to 5 models. You need to outnumber them at least, so I'd probably go with the same amount as the Immortals: 7 to 10.

Pariahs

The Pariahs don't really belong here, because they don't have the "Necron" Ability. Nevertheless, I'd like to add just a little bit of advice for them:
Considering they don't have a WBB Roll, the fact that they mostly work as a backup unit, plus the huge cost, I suggest to keep the number quite low, preferably 4. I mostly use them for their leadership-reducement ability, and 4 is quite sufficient for that.

Wraiths

Wraiths are the most important units to max out. In my opinion, you either take 3 in a unit, or none at all. Even though they have an invulnerable save, they will die if enough fire is put on them. Statistically, the enemy needs to make 9 wounds in order to let 3 die. This means he has to lay quite some fire on them to make sure they all die! Remove one, and they only need to make six, which is in a game quite a difference! Max Wraiths out. Always.

Destroyers, Heavy Destroyers

Probably the biggest threats to the enemy. They do want to take them out, and quickly! Here, you've got 2 options: Either take one maxed out unit (5 for Destroyers, 3 for Heavy Destroyers), or take 2 or 3 units of less models, but keep them together in play! 2 x 3 Destroyers do a lot of damage, and can pick out 2 targets, which in some cases can be a huge advantage! Heavy Destroyers are always risky, you might want to consider keeping one of them out of Line of Sight from the enemy, just to make sure the WBB is safe.
