Tactica Heavy Destroyers [Broken HTML]

Submitted By: Date: July 3, 2006, 12:00:00 AM Views: 2007
Summary:
The Basics.

I have used Heavy Destroyers since they came out with the new Necron Dex (That being the First Necron Dex), and I have found them both fun and powerful in there own right, but I also hear a lot of Necron players saying the same thing, Crons don’t need a tank killer, as everything in there army can do it, and normally normal destroyers do it better then heavies anyhow. While this is true for heavy tanks such as Land Raiders and Leman Russ battle tanks, what about Ork Buggies, Eldar Gravtanks, Walkers, Transports and the such, this is where the Heavy Destroyer comes into play.

When and Where to Use.

When and where to use a heavy destroyer is a big question, and I’m not going to be able to answer it, but I will be able to give you some examples of when and where.
Say you play a Speed Freak/Mech Eldar/Fast Dark Eldar army. Normally you are looking at having to shoot 6 shots at one of there tanks to get a glance, with the Heavy, you might have to shoot 2, But there’s a VERY good chance of one shot killing them, ESP if you get the first turn. Even if they have started to move, it’s still a 55% chance of glancing them.

The Low AP.

If you face someone who fields a lot of 2+ saves, normally you have a REAL bad time with this, as you have a total of 4 things that can by-pass the saves, 3 of them being in close combat(Lord, Spyder and Ctan), and only one at range. That’s right, the lovely Heavy Destroyer. At a long range, you can start to pick at these targets, while using your speed to avoid even the fastest Hive tyrant with wings. With the High S Low ap, you should be wounding almost every shot that lands and you will be landing 2 out of 3 shots. Being able to kill a Hive tyrant in 2 turn’s sounds nice to me.

The High Strength.

I have already covered using the High S to kill tanks, but something most people forget about is that the Heavy D is one of 2 Cron weapons to have an S higher the 8, and this is important. The basic T of almost all heroes in this game is 4, and if you can get 2 times that onto one of them, it means that is one dead hero. Now Heroes normally don’t run alone, but every now and then there is one kitted to do just that, and if you have ever faced a Khorn Lord, with Zerk galve, demonic mutation, flight and S, you will know how much you want to kill him Fast (Its like a total of 9 s5 attacks). This is also good to remember with Eldar Farseers, they only have to fail one save (but I do not recommend using HDs on Farseers).

The Speed.

A Heavy Destroyer is still a Destroyer, and that means a fast tough killing computer. It is able to move 12” and fire its lovely cannon, or move a total of 24”, to get behind that big tank way over there. It also counts as a jetbike, so that you can now move 24” over that hill, and hide behind that Whirlwind, or that Skyray (or whatever the new Tau tank with the seeker missile on it is called). This means that you should be able to kill his long range artillery by turn 2, giving it only one or two turns of shooting, and all the while, not have to worry about getting shot back, as you are hiding behind the tank, and you also have a 3++ save while the tank can shoot you.(PS, if he moves the tank so that he can shoot the HDs, he wasted a turn of shooting, and you still have a T5 3++ to help you live)

The Group.

I hear people taking HDs by themselves, or in 2 groups of one. I think this is a waste, and as most Necron players know, you need large groups to work well. A Single Necron will die, 20 will kill anything. I commonly field 4 Heavy Destroyers, with 10 Normally. I will normally field on oppitis sides of my main attack force, but I normally use there speed to meet up with each other. The reason being, during deployment, no one knows where you’re going to attack, and then when they meet up, people have to start thinking, what should I shoot, the Normal Destroyers, or the heavies. 10 Normal Destroyers and 4 Heavies do cost a lot of points (760), but it gives you 30 shots at S6, and 4 Shots at S9, ap2.

Why take them.

If you’re like me, I love Destroyers. I field lots of them(as you should already know), But I hate Wasting 15 shots(I field 2 units of 5), to kill one IC, or one transport. Most times I will waste 250 points worth of firepower killing a 50 point transport, and then I won’t be able to shoot what was inside it. Heavy Destroyers where the answer for me. They pop the transport, and the normal Destroyer rip into what was in it. It makes more sense, the 2 shots kill the transport(or at lest should pen it, making everything inside jump right one out J ), and the 15 shots rip into what’s inside it. Land Raiders are a Different Story but. With Land raiders, ALWAYS get your destroyers to shot it, and the Heavies to shoot what’s inside it. Why, because a Normal Destroyer has a better chance of killing a Land raider(or at lest the same), while a Heavy destroyer has A LOT better chance of killing the termies that are normally transported inside.

To Sum up.

I find that Heavies and Normal Destroyers work wonders when there together, but also have the power to be used by themselves to grab table quarters, or kill lone units. They have the speed to be apart one turn, and together the next, as well as the speed to avoid combat. I find that I field heavies not to replace anything, but more to make my current destroyers better, allowing the destroyers to do what they do best.
