Neonsamurai's Painting Blog [missing images; recoding needed]

Submitted By: Date: October 7, 2005, 11:57:42 AM Views: 19613
Summary: From Purple Raine. I was doing my routine board surfing the other day when I came across a user's profile and visited his website... after browsing through his work, I then realized that we had a very gifted artist within our community. Neonsamurai is an artist galore, and we're very fortunate to have him blogging in our community, sharing with us his many talents. All of Neonsamurai's photos will be collected in the galleries within his own folder. A direct link will be created there once we have it made.

The other day I was asked if I would like to start a series of articles about painting. Since I am rather new to this community I was pretty excited to get the chance to contribute on a regular basis to 40k Online and I hope I can stand to the high standards of this community.

My real name is Tim Jagodzinski, I am 25 years old and live in Berlin, Germany. I started playing Warhammer Fantasy Battle in 1997 with a Bretonian warhost and switched to Warhammer 40,000 right on the beginning of 3rd edition and played Tyranids. After a break of about 5-6 years I found back to the hobby and started to collect an Eldar army, which I am painting at the moment.

So in the following months you may follow me in collecting, converting and painting my Biel-Tan warhost. I hope I can give you some insight on my thoughts, painting techniques and conversion style so you can collect some ideas for your own Eldar army.

For this first feature I will share with you my initial thoughts about collecting an Eldar army. After some years of playing Tyranids I decided I want to have an army which is more demanding at both playing skills as well as painting skills. I always loved the looks of Eldar vehicles and their aspect warriors, especially Striking Scorpions and Swooping Hawks. Add the playing style of a fragile but hard hitting army and you got me to buy the strike force box and some additional stuff on eBay (a great place to get cheap models).

While assembling Guardians, the Falcon and the rest of the strike force I wondered what color scheme this new army would be painted in. I liked the overall look of a Biel-Tan army, but was not too satisfied with the wide usage of white – it just looked too clean for my taste. So I experimented a bit with greys and light browns and came to the conclusion that I wanted a bright bone colour on all areas where white is used on a standard Biel-Tan colour scheme.

The next thing to think about was the aspect warriors. As we know, each aspect has its own ritual colour pattern, but I also wanted them to look as a part of the rest of the army. Thus I incorporated the bone theme as well as the Dark Angels green in all aspects. All weapons would be painted in bone colours and all cloaks and other clothing would be painted in Dark Angels green. This way each aspect could keep its colour "identity" and still identify with its craftworld.

When my thoughts about colour schemes came to a conclusion I strayed off to some possible conversions. My first thought was that I will need to convert my Dark Reaper Exarch since GW in all its wisdom decided to equip the stock Exarch with the most suboptimal weapon one can think of for a long range fire support squad besides throwing rocks – the puny Shuriken Cannon. It is going to be exchanged with an Eldar Missile Launcher.

Next model to be converted would be the Swooping Hawk Exarch which suffers from the same GW syndrome and is going to be equipped with Web of Skulls and Shuriken Pistol to serve as an Exarch delivery system (yes I have a beard :P)

Other ideas also crossed my mind. I wanted to convert my Falcon to make it look more intimidating, then there is a Farseer on Jetbike waiting to be built and another Dark Reaper Exarch is in the pipe who will get a Dark Reaper Launcher for games with lower points limit.

Until now I got about one third of the army finished, but not one squad aside from the the Swooping Hawks, so in the next issues there will be a lot of work in progress images. Onto then I hope you had a nice read.
