The Stygian Scrolls of Lackland Thorn

Been reading HH book 1 and am currently reading the Death Guard when I came to page 122, and was wondering if anyone here knows anything more about The Stygian Scrolls or Lackland Thorn?

I have a weird feeling they are based off some real world influence, you guys have any?

There's a "Regenauld Thorn" (or something similar) in Abnett's "Legion".
They're a military unit who has special armour that self-generates spikes when they charge into battle.

The only real world influence I could see would possibly be from European explorers first meeting with equatorial africa or the amazon. Not very specific, I'm afraid.
