What about some military tents to go with the camp, so it looks occupied, and empty bullet casings on the bases?

A common suggestion Ive gotten in the past was to have battle damage on the sandbag structures. I figured it would be too hard to model damage on cured sculpey so I went and made a few more.

I attempted to make the damage look like as if the incoming fire had torn through the sandbags. The next step is to apply very fine sand and have the conents spilling out of the larger holes. This is what I came up with.

Some tool marks are evident on the inside of the larger holes and should be hidden when sand is applied. Comments and criticisms welcome.

Very nice what you have done MrJuice... I like them a lot... How are you planning to make the sand pouring out in a natural way?
Thanks to all the people showing faith in me

cool, very cool. For the sand pouring out, you should put a thin layer of PVA glue and then dip it in sand.
Still I lay cold, my soul seeks light / my eyes are tired; my heart's last fight
Around my shell of wood and cloth / trickle sound of wound and loss.
Broken voices of tears and cry's / sorrow and love for a Nation's son's life.
Mother and Father alone in thought. / Of the bravery and pain in the battle we fought.
We move slowly we three welcomed home. / A parade of silence, hands and flags wave
Above our bodies, they gather as on, / Along this highway of heroes for two seconds of light.

why not throw a few bunler into the mix? have a look at some layouts for american outposts and bases in vietnam, they look pretty cool and would work quite well.

For the sand trikle, I'd agree with the thinned PVA, but just allow it to drip out of the holes and have the sand follow the path the glue makes.  True, sand isn't a liquid, but it still will follow similar rules of motion (at least in 40k).

not sure what a 'bunler' is, figured its a typo, can you describe it.

I wont use sand, but something finer, to give a bit of contrast to the regular sand I use on some of the bases. Thinned PVA is the way Im planning. I want to have sand accumulate in small piles at the base below the larger holes. I think I will build up small areas with apoxie or someting first and add a bit of sand after. Just so I dont have to saturate large piles of sand and wait forever for it to dry.

I do believe he meant a "bunker"  :D   Something like this, perhaps.

Those look really good, especially the damage. Sandbags literally fall apart when kicked or torn. Maybe use some more sculpy to form the leaking sand and then kinda mottle it for texture of finer sand then paint. Damaged bags look kinda like piles of sand with sandbags buried in them, because of the way they fall apart easily. Also dont worry about size, there are many different sized bags used. Maybe have a few flattened and empty torn bags in front and behind the walls too.

About how much sculpey would estimate has been used thus far?  It looks amazing!

Not as much as youd think. I would guestimate at about 1/2 of a 1 lb package. I have a brand new package in front of me, looking at it i would say I could get almost 1000 sandbags, at the size i do them, out of a package.

Alright Mr. Juice, reading through this thread has persuaded me to try making sandbags of my own.  I was originally planning on buying them from the forgeworld site or some sort, but I like the idea of making them from scratch.  I'm unable to do much relating to 40k right now, as I'm with a very limited budget... so something cheaper and more time consuming would be perfect :P

I've got a question for you, however.  After you cook the sandbags, are they still fairly modular?  Can you still disassemble and reassemble them easily?

Also... where would you recommend looking for the sausage rolls?  :P  I've never had to buy them before.

Awesome work, by the way =D  Keep it up hehe

I havent been around much lately, and no progress to report here. That will change soon tho. But what I will do is give a guide on how i make the individual bags.

Minorek: they are modular in the sense that most of the wall thicknesses are the same and that some ends of the sandbag walls are vertical so that they can be extened when placed end to end. Once cured in the oven they are one solid piece.

To make one sandbag:

1 - roll a hunk of sculpey into a long sausage 30 cm long, about 0.5cm thick
2 - using a sharp blade cut it into 1 cm lengths using a ruler as a guide
3 - pinch both ends of each little sausage to slightly flatten the ends
4 - position the sandbag and push it down to stick
5 - repeat step 1 about 15 times and steps 2-4 about 500 times and you will have a nice little set of bunkers

enjoy

Where can you get the 1lb bags of Sculpey?
