Squats - 4th ed - Homemade list
« on: May 15, 2005, 05:47:40 AM »
Inspired by the feedback in this thread I have started working on this, and thought that feedback on it might be nice.

You can find the list I am making here in handy PDF.

Current version: 1.16

Version history:
0.01 - numbers on a page
0.02 - first uploaded version, had some text to it
0.03 - some background added
0.04 - some balancing done, and fluff near-complete.
0.05 - Bike and psychic powers fixed.
0.06 - some typos fixed.
0.07 - Ancenstral Hatred added
0.08 - Veteran-upgrades to squads added
0.09 - Typos
0.10 - Balancing
0.2 - Trait-system
0.21 - Superior Technology added
0.22 - Typos corrected
0.23 - Veteran advisors added
0.24 - Balancing
0.25 - Berserker added
0.26 - Balancing
0.27 - Termite revisited
0.28 - Balancing
0.29 - Clarifying

I would love to hear your feedback, but please, before you start; read the list, not just a few lines here and there, as things ripped from context (especially the Foreword) may seem a bit strange.

edit: I have also made a HTML - but this will not be updated (as the workload is terrible compared to the PDF, but it is 0.04, and therefore outdated). You can read it here.
This is posted to increase the chances of getting some more feedback. :)

Good looking list! I'll have to give this one the once over and try it out! I wonder if GW would consider bringing back the squats under Tau, since they seem to take in anyone. Since the squats were crushed by the tryranids, maybe a remnant made it to Tau boarder space and were absorbed into the empire. Just a thought.  ;D

Thank you.

1. No, I do not think the squats are coming back, at least not as squats.
2. And no, they were not crushed by the nids. That is just imperial propaganda. As you see, they are all alive and kicking. This has allready been covered in the brainstorming-thread (link in first post). if you have further input about that please take that there.

Question time! I went thru the codex you made and I love it! In a way you could make the two diffrent guild and brotherhood formations into a doctrine system like in IG. Maybe this was a typo or not, in the brotherhood support squad, it states that anyone in the squad can be armed with a heavy weapon. Does this mean that I can have 9 Heavy Bolter armed squats and one SL in that squad alone? Or are they suppose to be broken down into teams of 2 squats per weapon like they are done in the IG? I mainly play IG which is why I'm using them as a back up to the weapons team used in that codex. Once again Brilliant Job!  ;D

1. A trait-system is being considered, but I want the basic list to work first. The use of two optional organisation (brotherhood/Guild) is enough to start with I think.
2. Yes, ANYONE. 10 Heavy bolters blazing will be pretty scar, which is why this unit has some limitations. the SL may have a heavy weapon too unless he is upgraded to Veteran after all.

Looks good!  As always I'm interested in editing it...

-Fraggrenades and Krakgrenades should probably be two words each
-Meltabombs should have a hyphen
-I think "Living Ancestor psychic power (living ancestory only)" is a bit redundant ;)
-Force dome should be Force Dome
-Weaponstats should be two words
-Under bike it should say "Among all above-ground transports, the bike is the most cherished by the Squats."
-Under Incendiary Blasttip I assume you mean Flamer templates but to me it is unclear.
-Force Rods seem really cheap for their abilities
-On the Refractor-field shouldn't you point the reader to the IG codex?
-Under Rapier Laser Destroyer it should say "two," not "too"
-The Sidecar and Bike both proved +1T and +1AS but they are worded differently.  It should be consistent IMHO.
-Under Tarantula it should probably say "D6/3, rounded up"
-Don't you want to give the stats for the Thudd Gun under the fluff?  This is how they do it in some codices, i.e. Eldar
-Living Ancestors look nasty!  I think they should only be used in games of 1500 points or up, but then again the list seems generally underpowered so whatever ;)
-Why do the Imperial Guard Codex things have no page?
-Is it just me or are Combat Squads reaaaally overpriced?  I.E. they pay 3 more points than a Guardsmen for -1 In and +1 T?
-Under Guild Bike squad it should say that the riders have a LP and a CCW

Otherwise looks good!  Sorry if some of the questions have been addressed.

Apart from typos and such, which I will get to...
Thudd gun stats are in the summary, I thought it rather pointless to repeat it, but sure... :)
Yes, the Living ancestor is nasty. However, he can't be the lone HQ, and will drain quite a bit of points, so I thought he was ok. Preliminary testing has shown him to be quite balanced.
Yes, some of the basic troopers are overpriced, but they are paying a bit for Brothers in Arms and influence by other things like Inspiring and Ancestor powers. Some more testing will see if they should drop a point or two.

Edit: some things are now updated. Thanks for pointing them out.

One more thing--shouldn't the Squats have access to Leman Russes?  I believe they are STC material.  I seem to recall reading in US WD 294 some fluff about an "updated, more efficient reactor made possible by a recent STC recovery."  This leads me to believe that the Leman Russ should be in there.

This has been up before, and they are NOT in the original list, just marine-stuff. I am guessing they are in different STCs and the squats have access to some, but not everything.

I'm not sure Squats are coming back.  The guy who runs my store told me that it had something to do with a feud between an ousted GW developer and his successor.
Actual quotes from George W. Bush:
"The problem with the French is that they don't have a word for entrepreneur."
"More and more of our imports are coming from overseas."

Squats are not coming back. There might be a new dwarven race later on, based off the Demiurg, but they are not squats. It is also off-topic for this thread.

This looks like a very good list, I have to read it in more detail yet so am holding off on a critique until I can mull it through so to speak. But from the preliminary viewing I have given it very much resembles the squats that I remember.

Ur list is pretty good    this is what i use for a normal squat   i like it bettr   no fence

11 pts  3 str 4tough 3 ws 4 bs 1 w 1I 9 ld  4+sv
equipment: caprace armor squat lasgun(for all intence and purpasses a bolter)

special rules: only move 4"    and the squat gunner rule eg machine spirt
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed from all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to all.

That seems overpowered to me. It has the same BS and better leadership than a marine, with just one point in difference to save, and yet a LOT cheaper. With a machine-spirit rule they get even better. I would have trouble playing against a list-entry like that, especially for a basic trooper.

Actually its a little different   just a lazy typer    Um there leadership is supposed 2 be like a WBF swarf  and the las guns having bolter stats was from an offial press release from GW spain    the squat gunnery rule works differnt though not machine spirit but simmilar

That would make them more overpowered. Thus making it less likely to get played. You have convinced me at least; I would not play against a list iwth basic troopers like that.

What bout 13 points   ive always thought that more resonable but a gw manager thaought it should be 11

This is not the topic of this thread. Please take it elsewhere. Thanks.
This thread is for discussing this list, not another, ok?
