Rolling a D3 (with a D6) how do YOU do it?
« on: May 6, 2017, 04:03:03 AM »
I've been thinking about this for a while, and while I haven't got into a serious disagreement yet, I could see it happening quite easily during a game.
Aside from using an actual D3 how do you use a D6 to resolve it?
There are IMO 2 main ways of doing it:

Either A:
1',4' = 1
2',5' = 2
3',6' = 3

or B:
1',2' = 1
3',4' = 2
5',6' = 3

Rolling a 1' or a 6' won't get you into a disagreement, but all other results could.
Personally I prefer using method B, and first time I roll a D3 during a game I declare my method. But wouldn't it be easier to just have one method of doing it as the right way to do it?

Is there anyone re-rolling 4', 5' & 6' until you get a 1',2' or 3' or some other method?
What are your thoughts?

Have never known any other way but method B. I think they've even got it in one or all of the rule books.

I've never encountered anyone who uses any method other than method B and I've never had a disagreement with anyone about the results of a D3 roll.

I've never seen anything but method B

Wait, who on Earth has ever seen or heard anybody using method A? That's...that's just not a thing.  :o

Somebody tried to pull that in a game, they would be in need of a rulebook upside the head.

I've only every seen option B used. You can buy D3 dice though, I happen to have a couple from pen and paper RP days.

Only a certified lunatic would use 'A'.

B every day and twice on Sundays.

I think the way D3 is described in the BRB is to half the D6 result, rounding up.  Going 1 & 4 = 1 is not halfing the result.

Alright, it seems pretty clear cut then, had to check the rulebook and found it, it's explicitly method B. Now I have something to point at, if it would ever occur, Thanks :D

Do dedicated D3 dice have corresponding numbers on opposite or adjacent sides? come to think of it, how was the old sustained fire die laid out?

I've seen and used both methods before and I'm not a certified lunatic.  ;D

I think it was just a matter of personal GM/DM taste on how to roll a D3.

The only D3 I've seen were boneshaped, that had I,II,III on both upper sides of the ridge.
Sustained fire dice was [jam, 1,1,2,2,3] if I remember correctly.

The D3s I've seen were just D6s that had 1-3 on it twice

I used to use A since it made sense to me. That is 1-3 represent just that and then 4-6  represent a second set of 1-3. Straight forward and logical.

But have noticed in the year 2000+ I have to declare before that I use that method.
So normaly I use method B now.
Anyway......

I've always done it as "roll a d6, divide by 2, round up"

So:

1,2 -> 1
3,4 -> 2
5,6 -> 3

the best though is to get those D6s that are actually D3s (don't mix them up with your regular D6s!) that are just numbered 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3 and use those

(don't mix them up with your regular D6s!)
Except for morale tests. In which case, always mix them up!

3D printing websites have lots of D3 dice on them.
