My Imperial Guard Fluff. Vertane and Vertane 82nd
« on: July 7, 2007, 04:04:04 PM »
ive been working on this since the idea of starting IG popped into my head about a week back.  this is what i have soo far, it will be added to over time as my army develops, new regiments are formed etc, background history and battle results.  any way here it is, critique, read it, enjoy it, tell me what you think please.

Vertane 82nd “Sons of Honour”

Infantry Regiment:

•Doctrines:
Light Infantry
Veterans
Cameleoline
Iron Discipline
Special weapon squads

•Planetary information:
Location: Perseus Arm, Gothic sector of the Segmentum Obscurus

Civilised Industrial planetary system “called the Vertanus system” the main world of Vertane is orbited by four moons.  Vertane is a small planet and as such in order to support a population of 9 billion people, 90% of all useable land has been urbanised, this has resulted in an incredibly polluted atmosphere from heavy industry and urban pollution.  Despite this no Hive cities have yet been formed because the population is too small, however the cities are sealed for protection against the heavy smog which causes a permanent gloom across Vertane, comparable to a Hive such as Necromunda.

A second smaller planet named Sejaro, an Agri-world, easily supports the agricultural needs of the system.  The population size of system currently is 17 billion spread across Vertane and its four moons with only 400,000 people located on the Agri-world of Sejaro.

In relation to other Imperial systems the Vertanus system has a small population and the system has only 3 other uninhabitable planets, which due to regular plasma storms and a mainly gaseous composition are used for the harvesting of plasma fuel and construction of weapons.  One of these gas planets “St.Darrius’ Furnace” has a geo-stationary moon which is regularly used for weapons testing.

Moon of Antar, invaded in late M36.  Heavily urbanised due to its small size which, worked to the advantage of the 82nd “Sons of Honour during the invasion.  It is now also used as a military training world for every infantry regiment of the Vertane PDF in Urban warfare and as such areas of the city have been purposefully left in ruin after the invasion for use in urban specific training.  The moon of Antar is now the permanent garrison of the 82nd  “Sons of Honour” and is heavily fortified from further invasion as it is the closest point of the system to the eye of terror.

Because of its location and vulnerability to the eye of terror, the Imperium has seen that Vertane is easily defendable and therefore they have seen to it that Vertane has ample orbital defences to deal with most threats. Orbiting Vertane its self, is an Imperial Space station and two orbital docks which garrison a small standing fleet of imperial navy which includes 10 thunderbolt squadrons, 5 lighting squadrons and 3 marauder squadrons.

Industry:

Known for specialised Sentinel production, a type rarely seen among other guard regiments in that they are designed specifically to maximise their effectiveness in close proximity and maximise protection to the pilots from gunfire.  Therefore they use the best features of Catachan and Steel Legion variants.  These Sentinel engines are highly charged having had alterations made to the plasma core fuel cells which increases the overall power out put and speed at which the sentinels can hope to achieve. This in combination with a specialised gyroscopic stabilisation system means that the sentinels produced here can tear through the streets at about 35kph without risk of falling over from rough terrain.

It does produce Tanks too, as it is a highly industrial planet system it has the materials and know how and permission of the Adeptus Mechanicus to produce its own tank variants.  The Primary productions are Hellhounds, leman Russ, and Leman Russ Demolishers, each major city sector in the Vertane system has a vehicle factory of some kind, and each inhabited planet or moon is geared around the specialised production of one Tank type.

Exports:

Vertane is an exporter in primarily military equipment, it produces a lot of reconnaissance gear in the form of Sentinels, Salamanders, Sniper scopes and Rifles (primarily of the needle variety) but it does also export Agricultural goods to neighbouring systems. The crop yield of the Vertane Agri world Sejaro is so good due to pre-Heresy volcanic activity and the current climate which is ideal to growing crops, which incidentally is why Sejaro has been set aside specifically as an Agri world.  This one Agri world produces enough food comfortably for the Vertane System and export of excess to neighbouring systems.

Vertane 82nd “Sons of Honour”

Regiment History:
The first incarnation of the 82nd was formed in the wake of the age of apostasy in M36.  Their first ever campaign ended victoriously when the 82nd Regiment was instrumental in the destruction of 3 traitorous guard regiments from the eye of terror.  The Traitor guard were under the influence of a Sorcerer from the Thousand Sons Legion who had seen it necessary to invade the Vertanus System in order to further his own schemes.

The 82nd Infantry Regiment were garrisoned on the moon of Antar, orbiting one of the 3 gas giants at the Systems fringe. This was the foremost point of the attack and therefore bore the brunt of the Traitors assault.

Because the 82nd were fortunately garrisoned on the urbanised moon of Antar, it was their involvement which was critical in the interception and destruction of the Traitor Guard legions.  Because of the skilful tactics of the commanding Officer Field Marshall Nathan Cain, and the intensive training of the Vertane Infantry in urban conflict  the traitors were crushed before even the Ordo Malleus could respond in force, and so they gained the Honorific “Sons of Honour” for defending their system against a much greater force than their own.  Since then every incarnation of the Vertane 82nd have carried this honorific with pride.

The 82nd “Sons of Honour” are now solely trained in Urban Warfare so that they excel in city fight situations, so much so that they are cited in the Tactica Imperium as an exemplary Regiment for other to copy their use of perfect tactics in Urban Warfare, and again as an example of a successful campaign against a force much larger than themselves. The commanding Officer at any one time is so drilled in viewing developing situations and analysing the battle that he is highly likely to be a bearer of the Macharian Cross.  There hasn’t been an Officer since M39 who hasn’t bore this medal at some point in his command.

Army Composition:

The Vertane PDF force consists of 351 Regiments, which more often than not are used in conjunction with each other in order to maximise their efficiency and chances of success.  All regiments of the Vertane PDF are skilled in fighting in hostile environments, therefore chem. Inhalers and gas masks are standard issue to all regiments to maximise their success as a planetary defence force of an urban world.  However the 82nd often take to war without such protective gear as its commanding Officer Nathan Cain argues that its too restrictive on its wearers visibility and impedes effectiveness in City fighting.

The Vertane PDF is predominantly a defensive force, having for the past millennia mainly fighting in their system against the threat of Chaos and Ork hordes, this means that few Regiments have seen combat outside of their system, and as a result are inexperienced in other areas of warfare.  This has however been changed in recent years by the introduction of expeditionary forces and expansion forces.  Recent military plans have called for the invasion and occupation of current areas of Ork inhabitation in order to quell the number of frequent raids into Vertane, for this the Vertane PDF has begun experimentation with a mixture of regiments in conjunction with each other.  The 82nd “Sons of Honour”, the 103rd “Emperors Shield” and 352nd “Orbital Thunder” and 5 further Infantry Regiments the 80th to the 85th, including the “Sons of Honour”  This is becoming known as the Vertane EEF “expedition and expansion force” and is lead by the 3rd Command corps Regiment.  The EEF is in full time service as Imperial Guard regiments and are therefore independent of the PDF, and are involved in expansion and expeditionary crusades.

The EEF has seen great success in their training and commanders are confident in their potential for their first upcoming crusade into neighbouring Ork worlds.  The 103rd “Emperors Shield” will provide the spear head of the assault bringing the full power of one of Vertane’s 5 Armoured Companies, this is then supported by the 80th Infantry Regiment and the 85th infantry corps who consolidate the advance of the 103rd.  The 82nd are used as an elite Regiment who operate solo to take over heavily defended cities or settlements, whilst other regiments work in conjunction

Whilst Vertane isn’t a Forge world per se it does engage in the construction of Arms and Munitions and regimental specific vehicles and Tanks, enough to meet the requirement of the planetary system and the entire 351 regiments that make up the Vertane PDF.  A lot of Vertane’s armour is shipped in from neighbouring forge worlds, and their popular support from the Ordo Malleus and neighbouring Imperial Planet systems has put much into the War effort of Vertane, this input into the systems Military has resulted in ample orbital protection and offensive capability from space stations and a small imperial navy garrison hosting 3 Marauder Bomber Squadrons, 10Thunderbolt squadrons, 5 Lighting squadrons and a further score of Valkyries and  Vulture gunship squadrons which are used in support of the EEF’s Infantry regiments.

Regiments:

1st – 5th Command Corps           (3rd command corps is in service as Imperial Guard.)
6th – 79th Logistics corps
80th - 100th Veteran Infantry regiments.  (Are in service as Imperial Guard regiments)
100th -105th Armoured Companies.          (Are in service as Imperial Guard regiments)
106th – 158th PDF Artillery Regiments
159th – 350th PDF Infantry Regiments
351stImperial Navy Regiment.

the Imperial navy garrison operates independently from the Vertane PDF.  However, they are occasionally used in planetary defence. Their primary role lays in support of the Vertane EEF Imperial Guard force.

There is what i have so far.

coolthe only thing is i thought cadia was he closest to the eye of terror, although you could have meant the closest planet in tat sytem to the eye of terror (dam i just confused myself)
You consider yourself soldiers?. Having two arms and legs, a head and a lasgun does not make you a soldier! Soldiers must prove themselves. You are maggots crawling across the Emperors garden. this is a war and such wars feed on maggots. Do you want to be ork fodder? Make no mistake these creatures eat maggots for breakfast! It is time to prove yourself!, it is time to goad destiny and die for the cause. Follow me maggots and prove yourself soldiers, every last one of you!

yeh it was the moon of Antar that was the closest planet to the eye of terror in the vertanus system.  Vertane its self is further away from the eye of terror than cadia by a fair way but its still within its danger zones

10 thunderbolt squadrons, 5 lighting squadrons and 3 marauder squadrons to defend a planet?! Not only are these primarily atmospheric craft but such a small number is entirely inadequate for defending a planet. 3 Squadrons of Marauder bombers are not going to make a dent on a capital ship and 10 Thunderbolt Squadrons and 5 Lightning Squadrons are just going to be overwhelmed by enemy air superiority fighters in the case of invasion.
Most planets of such importance would be defended by at least a couple of cruiser squadrons plus various system ships and smaller escorts as well as hundreds of squadrons of space-capable fighters and bombers... Especially for a planet so close to the eye of terror...

thank you qwertypp7 that was my argument but a friend i got to help with this who i refer to as a fluff buff said that anything over the numbers i put would be far to unbelievable and that the air support from the imperial navy would only be small

i shall adjust this accordingly thank you

oh also is it realistic that these imperial navy detatchments would be under the control of Vertane and there fore would be designated specific regiment numbers such as i have given my army structure.. ie 80th-100th veteran regiments?

There are cases of Imperial Gaurd regiments and PDF units that do not operate on the ground... It might be that the navy are under the command of the planetary defence force big boss but they might have some sort of Navy officer who did all of the... Important...stuff.. . You know what I'm not so sure... I just know that the numbers you originally quoted were insanely small...

Ask Irandrura... He will know...
