...Only War (40K, Webcomic, Simplistic Style)
« on: April 17, 2006, 08:33:07 AM »
Greetings all. I do occassionally whip out some comics. Currently on to a 40K one so thought I would share. I accept all feedback positive or negative in stride so feel free to express yourself.

This is the 1st one and its reworked form based on imput from other 40K fans...

And the reworked one...

I see what you mean by 'Simplistic Style' and it does show potential. My main concern with your comic above is that to me there just isn't enough action going on. I also think some sort of background would do wonders, perhaps giving some hint of thier location would give the readers more information than what they read in the speech bubbles. For your first comic, its very well done, given time you may have something good going on :)

Oh and Welcome to 40KO! enjoy your stay :)

many thanks. Not my 1st web comic, some of my other ones got pretty complicated with colors and shading. But thatwas when I was deployed and could work on them for 2-3 hours daily. I'm back home with the kids and family and work so I don't have nearly as much time as I had last year sitting in Baghdad.

I wanted a simpler style because I do all my work on the computer (scanner is a POS and wont scan... but will still print and fax... dang windows XP!). Additionally with a simpler style it lets me work on expressions and the text portion with out the big back ground distraction. There are more of them out there and the biographies will appear in due order... a couple are posted at the other site where I do my initial work up.

Again thanks for the feedback.

Only War #3 is a colored one... comments or feedback is welcomed; don't expect too many colored ones though.

I'll try to keep updates coming on fridays.

@Gordo: I am currently using Macromedia's Fireworks and a graphics tablet. I need to find my copy of Photoshop Pro 6/7 and start using that until I am more proficient. I just like the easy simple Fireworks interface.

Unfortunately I have never watched a complete episode of SouthPark... but I have heard most of the jokes. Many thanks for the reading of the comic and the positive comments. its also very well received at Drunk Duck Comic Forum. Hardest part of new comics is getting them read and spread around. So trying to get the customer base going.

But thanks again... their will be some more posted later tonight or tomorrow.

I understand the simplistic style, and I like it. But some parts annoy me.  First off, tighten up the shoulders. The fact that there's a space in between the should pad and the armour does look good.  After that, the hands and waist are a little small. mainly in the first and fourth comics.

Have you considered doing multiple panel comics, not one shot gags?

It seems like I have failed to greet you when you posted in the thread "Welcome all Newcomers!"...

Well, I suppose it is never too late. Welcome to 40K Online, Thunderer! :) I hope you enjoy your time here in this community. And be sure to pop by the IG boards sometimes if you feel like talking & discussing anything about Guard. (Particularly your mech list) Many of the officers & people there are friendly. Just make sure you don't do something silly... ::)

Alright back to the topic...

I like your works there! Simple, Stupid, and Funny! :D Look forward to see more of them! ;)

@wper34: Many thanks for the greetings and I will be more active in the IG forums... I am currently sitting on 6 IG related forums but I need to trim that down as my surfing time is getting truncated.

@Khorne Commander Balthraka: check out the next one below for some multi frame comic with a tad of action.

@Fading Jew: Always nice to have another new reader, and as I will continually say I gratefully accept all comments positive or negative and will see if I can work off the discrepancies. Its (the comic) is still evolving and I am trying to settle into a style and proportions that for me is easy and quick to draw. It gets especially challenging when doing multiple cells because there is a ton of work making sure everyone still resembles each other, ame size, and all the other visual aspects of the artwork.

The shoulder pad issue was a style choice up front but if you look at SGT Martyr he actually has shirt sleeves where as Guardsman Bob (main character) and Gunner Joe don't. I might change up Bob and Joe to include shirt sleves and shorten their abdomen a bit which should help with the waist issue. I also need to come up with my own stylistic way of doing boots better.

But at least it is having the desired effect over here with some decent conversation, corrections, pointers, etc... being discussed than over at Warseer, Librarium Online, Slayer Brotherhood (small 40K section on that forum), Warvault, Work in Progress (conversion forum), and Armored Company. So this is quickly looking like its prime home... So I appreciate your candid and honest comments. Keep them coming... and by popular request here is the first multi-cell and collaborative work.

An IG player from Librarium Online scripted this one. I cut it down to 3 cells vice four and removed a character or two to meet a production time line. Unfortunately he is dragging this comic closer to TSOALR with the mentioning of the games rules and showing players... but that is no issue. So if anyone here thinks they want to do me a script I will work it into the schedule and they will get credit for the collaboration just like the guy in this one.

Hope you all enjoy and as usual comments, positive or negative are greatfully accepted.

many thanks there killersquid... I aim to please... I should be kicking off the next one and might do some WIP shots of it. My writer is doing me up another script for next week and I have a game tuesday so I am sure something will inspire me as I get my butt handed to me by my GT going, Senior GW outrider opponent... but I might go Armored company and mess him up when he isn't looking.

Thanks Nurble... today is my production day, seeing as how I haven't done a great job of time management I have to get one up tonight. So if all goes well there will be one posted this evening. My game earlier in the week didn't go but I have a funny story anyway... how many times have you shown up for a scheduled game and your opponent didn't make it... well let me tell you I play in a group and I was still the only guy out of 4-5 that showed up... annoying.

But I appreciate the nice comments and we will see if we can get another episode up tonight.

Well we can hold off on that for a while until we are certain that I will be consistant... say at least 10-15 pictures up and then we can worry about whether there is any value added.  But I am productive... surf over to my art forum some time and you will see that I have quite a bit with much more to still attach. All things in time... so let me focus.

but I do appreciate the vote of confidence.
