Clawing my way back from the dead.
« on: July 17, 2023, 09:23:23 PM »
So. Been gone awhile. Without getting into any details, life took a bit of a turn, and i've been mostly out of the mix for several years. Recently however, i've started to try and get back into the hobby. not gaming, of course, as honestly, no one's got time for that. But back into painting and whatnot.

Trying not to ramble here. So basically, after sharing some of my projects with friends, as i shake off the rust, i thought i'd come back and share some with my oldest community, which i realise now that i write this, i have missed quite dearly.

Some test minis i've done, mostly based on the paints i have which are still usable, and to see what muscle memory i still have.

Some older models i've finished up, which had languished for years.

And my current meandering projects...

Krondys is new, of course. I was in the store recently on a whim and just couldn't pass up arguably the best Dragon model GW has ever made... The present plan is to make him a proper Star Dragon, and i've got a rough plan on how i can mount an Elf to him.

And it occurs to me i need to relearn how formatting works...

Nice, glad to see you back!

Awesome work on Krondys - the galaxy wings are a cool idea.

Love Dragon Princes - so good surprise to see one here.

Nice Blood Angel?

I have 10 of them still. I actually have a good 2500pts of High Elves, mostly unpainted, that have been languishing on a shelf for a decade. Staring at their lances out of the corner of my eye is actually part of what got me painting agian.

Nice Blood Angel?

Honestly, no idea. I've been doing some experimentation to see what i like, and what i can stand to paint, for the Primaris marines i have.

I can safely say, Red is not it. My Eldar use enough red.

Hey Lachdonin, been a while! :D Glad to see you thought of us here and decided to share you works. I agree, the night sky wings are cool as hell. I like the colorfulness of the Eldar too.

Holy crap! Your back! And with a bang. Great to see you here again. Paint work looks great and not rusty at all. Keep at it.

Thanks guys. It's good to be back doing hobby things, even if i'm realising i desperately need to replenish some paints.

With that in mind, i've been picking away at what i have the last few days. Working through the basecoat blocking on the Dragon Princes. I've always wanted to have a big block of them, but only managed to get 10 before they went out of production. Will have to see what comes out of The Old World and whether or not i can increase their numbers.

I also did two more tests on Marines... Still not sure i like either of them, may have to pick up more colours before i do anything in a uniform scheme.

And as more of a complete project. I took one of my brother's Plague Marines and did up a full test mini for them. Since i only used the colours i had available, i should actually be able to do a full unit of these...

The first of your marine examples appears to have a helmet in a slightly different shade than his armor. I think the only critique I can offer is that I don't think that works particularly well. Either contrast more or be identical, imho.

Yeah, i'm still not sold on any of the tests i've done. I don't know how people come up with Space Marine schemes, but man, it's not definitely not my forte.

Anyway... i've spent the last 2 weeks  repairing most of my old High Elf army, and finishing up my brothers Death Guard models.

My brother's always been perfectly satisfied with the 5 foot rule, so i spend less time on his stuff than my own. But i'll admit, there's something comfortably liberating with just 'Good Enough'.

Alright, found an entire box of salvageable paints this week, which significantly increased my range of colours again. Most importantly, it had my Greens, a core colour for my Eldar. I also found... a Forgeworld Avatar. I don't know where it came from, as i don't ever remember buying it, but i couldn't pass up that opportunity. I did some minor conversion work using some pieces from the plastic Avatar i have, and got started on that this week.

I also got my Isle of Blood Prince on Griffon, and Swordmasters, cleaned up finally. I think i'm going to need to find a better way to clean dust, as it... is a time consuming process, and takes at least 3 water baths to really get clean...

Alrighty, well. It quickly became apparent that trying to paint at my computer desk was not going to work. So i've spent the last little while cleaning up the collected detritus of years of neglect from my actual painting station. How it got so bad isn't important, but the progress has been significant.

In the mean time, i've also managed to get some long overdo progress done on a minor conversion piece from many moons ago. I just need to figure out a head to put on her, before finishing up the paintjob...

What a glorious collection, Lachdonin, by Khaine... I love the work you're doing on the soulblight vamp characters, smooth layering all around! I look forward to seeing you finishing!

What a glorious collection, Lachdonin, by Khaine...

It's certainly a bit of an eclectic grouping. On show, from the top down, there are 2 shelves of Eldar, almost all craftworlders. Though i do have a unit of Dark Eldar  Warriors, Reavers, and a Harlequin Starweaver.

On the bottom, there's my High Elves (sans an unassembled Lion Chariot), my Wraithknight, and my dust coated Dreadfleet minis, still waiting for paint after a decade. As well as an Epic 40k Space Marine battleforce in the back that will probably be offloaded soon...

There's my freshly organised Bits boxes, my in-progress Neferata, an old D&D chainmail Black Dragon, Krondys (who is awaiting a proper drybrush so i can do his underwings and conclusively settle on his scheme) a long in-progress conversion for a Necrosphinx that i'll get around to some day... And my wide assordment of odds and bobs i will have to go through. Amongst which are several old, also unfinished (there is a trend with my work it seems) BFG ships.

Not shown is a whole other shelf of Chaos Space Marines belonging to my brother (he doesn't paint himself) and a cabinet with the Space Hulk range, among a bunch of Space Marine models i intend to sell in the near future to clear space.

Also, something i forgot to include, painted up one of the spare Avatar heads to practice after so long. Not quite done, Bronze and Green need a bit of finishing, but...

The fire pattern and flame colour of that head have both turned out very well.  The face is a curious contrast.  I will be interested to see how the bronze turns out once it is finished.

I did finish up the 'bust' today. The bronze came out more like gold than i wanted, and i realise that i need to practice my gems again after so long out of painting. But for what's basically a spare bit, i'm content enough with it.

Alright, a touch ahead of schedule this week. But i'm not going to spend the next 10 hours painting 53 gemstones, so i'm calling this one done for now.

You have a really fantastic selection of contrasting colours there.  It has turned out very well.  I especially like the molten effect that you have managed to achieve.

Awesome work on that Avatar! The Wailing Doom and the contrast of the green crest are my favorite parts!
