Gameboard built with Poly Styrene/Insulation Boards
« on: February 17, 2010, 02:24:48 PM »
I was asked the other night if one could use Styrofoam to build a Gaming table...
My answer was yes. So next day I started building one in the shop for our customers to play on.
First layer done. I am gluing the pieces together by melting them slightly with Lacquer Thinners.

Take your time and be careful with that bread/hobby-knife. It gets stuck often.
[smg id=3630]
Starting with the textures.
[smg id=3635]
Build permanent scenery onto the board.
Don't be scared of a project like this, Practice makes perfect.

Photos were take by Alan Kent, my Shop Manager.
Removed some Pictures so I can add some later.

Now we start adding colour and fine sand.

This now became a bit of a rush job as the Guys/Gals wanted to play on it last night.

I'd rather be sorry for that which I've done, than that which I didn't.

Looks really good. What kind of games do you intend to play on it?
I know violence isn't the answer... I got it wrong on purpose.

nice. about how much did it cost total? i am in need of a game board.

Time - 3 Days so far.
Insulation Board - Scrap scrounged from a local building site.         FREE
Sand picked up in the road after a storm.                                        FREE
5 liters  Lacquer Thinners                                                                 $ 10.00
3 liters of Wrongly mixed colours at local hardware                         $   9.00
2.5 kg Casting Resin                                                                         $ 25.00

Total cost so far                                                                                $ 44.00

I took the liberty of converting South African Rands _ Dollars @ R7.50 = $1.00

Looks pretty sweet. good to see people making boards with actual depth to them :)

Lovely board, I will look into why your not able to post more pictures in here... but something you might try is to simply have URL links to your photobucket pictures with the thumbnail as the linking device. I can post 30+ pictures in this manner and have never had an issue...

I only mention this as I though your work was very good, and others might learn from your experience.

Nice touch with the bridge btw, I would love to hear how you modeled that little gem.

Cheers

Here they are in the building up stage.

Trimming the edges

Texturing

Scenery

OK, now that seams to be working... so I will PM the op and post a sticky on to post pictures in this format in order to bypass the limit imposed by posting direct links to user gallery pictures within 40Kol...

Look at you last post with pics... I did the entire collection of pictures within that one post... I will PM you on the how to for this, as my kung fu is not any greater than yours, I just used a coded method that the program does not see as excessive imagry.

Cheers.

This is just getting better and better. I second that the rivers look great - it'll be a blast to play on the table :)

Here it is with the flock done and some trees added.

Have fun.

Edited the post to have pics within thumbnails... as it helps those witholder computers.

This is going to be a great looking board!

About the bushes along the river... what did you use to make them? twine?(surely not...). They kind of stand out (maybe because of the flash?) they should been basecoated in darker green, the actual green could be the highlights... I'm not complaining, just constructive criticism...

I really like the fact that you seems the have combined different colores for the grass... looks great! maybe that's why the bushes bugged me...
