looking for floating tricks
« on: January 30, 2018, 08:21:45 PM »
I'm looking for ways I can give small things the appearance of floating, so no need for magnet.

Can I get away with gluing oval rocks into impossible balancing positions? or is there something thin and clear out there I can use?

Just to clarify, I'm looking to make stuff float around a mini, rather than trying to make a mini float.

Did you want anything specific to be floating? Or just "things" in a general sense?

I think some piles of rocks that are floating could work well. GW did a similar thing on the base for the plastic High Elf wizard.

Alternatively, thin wires painted black are a common thing to give the illusion of floating. Anchoring things onto leaves.branches is another option.  Or, for the figures themselves, using bits of clothing like cloaks and loincloths as the anchoring point can give the illusion of flying or floating (see models like Forge World's Shadow Spectres for examples of that).

Those centre on making the model look like it is floating.

I'm looking to try and make things around the model lkook like they are floating, kind of like superman as he takes off.

Best bet then, is to get really thin wire and support objects on those.

G'day, Magenb!
I agree with Killersquid, however, you could try and cover those wires with something like cotton wool, giving the appearance of dust trailing from the objects.

Could also try heating up some flying stands to the point where the plastic becomes pliable and bend it into a position that you want.

Don't know how well that would work, but it's an idea.
If there is anything that recent politics has taught us, it is that quotes taken out of context can mean what ever you want them to.

Stretching sprue is a technique that is used by aircraft and boat modellers to good effect. Another technique they use for antenna, and one that might work for magenb, is to use the bristles of a nylon brush.

Oooooo, Alienscar!
The bristles idea sound really good. Do you mean to stiffen them or leave them wobbly?

As the aircraft and boat modellers use them to replicate antenna they can get away with using them wobbly. I would imagine that magenb would need to stiffen them.

that's an interesting idea with the bristles, the other idea I had was for floating runes and the old brush bristles could be used for movement trails.

I've still got some clear plastic from the harlies transport sprue, I'll see if I can thin that out.

Once used the glass sheathes they place blood samples on, to look at them under a microscope, to give the impression of floating stairs on an old terrain piece.
