1500pt Tournament Harlequins
« on: October 9, 2017, 05:43:33 PM »
Hi Guys,
I have been throwing together various lists for a tournament coming up in November. I've put together Emperor's Children, Raven Guard, Craftworld, Daemon and Harlequins lists and to be honest the Harlequins is one that's really appealing to me at the moment.
My plan so far is something along the lines of:

++ Battalion Detachment +3CP (Aeldari - Harlequins) [73 PL, 1496pts] ++

+ HQ +

Shadowseer : Shuriken Pistol

Troupe Master : Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Embrace

Troupe Master : Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Embrace

+ Troops +

Troupe
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Embrace
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Embrace
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Embrace
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Caress
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Caress

Troupe
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Embrace
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Embrace
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Embrace
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Caress
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Caress

Troupe
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Embrace
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Embrace
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Embrace
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Caress
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Caress

+ Elites +

Solitaire : Harlequin's Caress, Harlequin's Kiss

+ Fast Attack +

Skyweavers
. Skyweaver: Shuriken Cannon, Zephyrglaive
. Skyweaver: Shuriken Cannon, Zephyrglaive
. Skyweaver: Shuriken Cannon, Zephyrglaive
. Skyweaver: Shuriken Cannon, Zephyrglaive

+ Heavy Support +

Voidweaver
. Voidweaver: Prismatic Cannon, 2x Shuriken Cannon

+ Dedicated Transport +

Starweaver : 2x Shuriken Cannon

Starweaver : 2x Shuriken Cannon

Starweaver : 2x Shuriken Cannon

++ Total: [73 PL, 1496pts] ++

Any thoughts very much appreciated!

Alright, so I've been playing Harlequins in tournaments a lot, so the advice I'll give is based on that.

First off, You're going to be in an uphill battle against any competitive army. This is a shooting meta, so you need to plan around that.

Your troupe squads are far too expensive. Either take melee weapons, or fusion weapons, but not both. You should try to get as many squads in starweavers as possible, and then trick them out. I'd suggest 5 man squads with 3 fusion pistols in each. Hopefully, by dropping all the melee weapons and 2 pistols in each squad, will give you the points for a 4th squad.

The more squads you have, the better chance you have of something surviving. Harlequin skimmers are fairly survivable (for the most part), so you want to give your opponents a lot of targets to force them to spread their fire around.

I'd switch out the voidweaver for a 4th starweaver as well. Voidweavers are garbage, as their main gun is a heavy weapon. Better off taking more transports, as shuirken cannons are awesome.

That change will put you at 1509pts, so I'd drop the Embraces from the troupe masters.

Skyweavers are okay, but are only good near troupe masters with the re-roll to wounds. Don't let them get too far away from support, or they will die really quickly.

Solitare is great, and he can often be a great tool to claim slay the warlord.

Shadowseers are great. I suggest taking Fog Of Dreams as it's power to double down on the -1 to hit from the skimmers.

Games are going to be really quick. Usually, you'll be tabled really quickly, unless you get some good luck, or a favourable match up. I've been really discouraged playing Harlequins competitively in 8th, as they don't compete well in the current meta. Unless you run Ynnari and take a huge swarm of Razorwing Flocks.

Thanks KS, I was hoping that you'd spot this thread!
The tournament I am entering shouldn't be ITC level of competitive but obviously I want to do as well as I can.
How do you find that they work with just the base Harlequin blades? I look at how good the optional weapons are and can't help but want to take them even though they are quite expensive!
I did think about dropping some of the fusion pistols down, I do expect to face quite a lot of armour though. Tanks are very much in fashion in our local Meta.
Thanks for the feedback, I'll have a look at my models and see what I can do.

The melee weapons are great, but the fusion pistols are so useful. Great for drive bys. Really, just don't over load them. If going with specialist melee weapons, stick to only two or three a squad. Leave some naked troupes to die first.

I find all my troupes are dead by the end of the game, and the characters do most of the actual leg work.

Starweaver : 2x Shuriken Cannon

++ Total: [79 PL, 1497pts] ++

I did think about adding in some more Skyweavers and making them into 3 units of 2 (and then in an outrider detachment for an Extra CP) but thought it may be better to have an extra Troupe and Starweaver as you have suggested. With a little bit of work I should be able to field this force (will need a handful more troupe models) but I have just under a month to get them together anyway.

Troupe
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Blade
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Blade
. Player: Fusion Pistol, Harlequin's Embrace
. Player: Harlequin's Embrace, Shuriken Pistol
. Player: Harlequin's Caress, Shuriken Pistol

So rather specifically with the layout of the players, i'm not sure what your modelling options here are, but I think a Troupe like this would be better as:

Player: Shuriken Pistol, Blade
Player: Shuriken Pistol, Blade
Player: Fusion Pistol, Embrace
Player: Fusion Pistol, Embrace
Player: Fusion Pistol, Caress

This squad has the same weapons, same cost, etc, but it can absorb two losses without losing any of its special pistols or special blades. It will be exactly as effective as your layout, but if it loses 1 or 2 models it will be more effective than yours, which will definitely lose a Fusion Pistol or special combat weapon. There's no downside to a particular model having both a fusion pistol AND a special combat weapon, so doing it like this and making 2 of the players basically "ablative wounds" is probably the best strat. Remember, you get to pick which models are removed first, so this lets you remove the cheap ones.

I like this list a lot more. Much more balanced.

I run 3 units of 2 bikes in 2k, and I like them a lot. A bit expensive for 1500. You could think of splitting the one unit onto two of three, but it's fine either way.

So, as you have things, you'll have 5 drops if you shove all the characters in transports. Pretty good.

You'll find character placement really important. The troupe masters make or break combat for you, so make sure they on on foot when you make charges for the re-roll wounds. So often you'll be wounding on 4's and 5's that the re-roll is critical.

Try to save the solitaires blitz, so he can take the benefit of the troupe masters aura, or if he is able to charge a character. He's an assassin, not a chaff killer.

He can kill a marine character in one round of combat. If he gets you warlord and dies, that's a good trade. Or use him to go after psychers and buff characters.

Cheers guys,
I am due to be taking on an Admech army next Thursday and will probably be using this list for it. He will be bringing his tournament list (It's a team tournament and he is on my team) so will be a tough game. He is a pretty good player as well.

Let us know how it turns out.

One of the more effective local players here runs Harlequins as either Ynnari or pure Harlies. His tournament lists reflect much of the advice you've seen provided here (Troupes, Star Weavers, Characters, seasoned with bikers).

Rejoice.  Despair.
Fate does not care.
Each knotted mind entwined.
Each soul another's bind.
And blind though we are led.
In time we do know when, to cut a thread.
