Intercessor Kit
« on: December 8, 2018, 03:48:17 PM »
So I decided to go ahead with howling griffons as my new hobby project. Slowly. Don't really like the primaris models as a whole, but the intercessors are cool. So are some others. I'll paint them slowly and hope the range grows in a kind direction or try to convert stuff.

Anyways. This is mostly a painting project on my end, but any thoughts on what I should model them with from a game-play point of view?

I haven't even bought the marine book yet, because the game play is really a secondary concern for me at this point. But I have to give them something. Can anyone give me a really fast two cent summary of the options?

Thanks

Intercessors don't really *have* options, per se.

You can give a guy an auxiliary grenade launcher and the sarge can take a power sword or a chainsword and...that's it. You can put bits on the guys, I guess--pistols and knives and grenades and such--but they have pretty much zero weapon options.

For the auxiliary grenade option, you'll want to take one per 5 guys, as it's free and a great upgrade. Always do it.

For the bolters, you have three options.

Bolt rifle.
Assault bolter.
Stalker bolter.

Stalker bolter can be very usful if you want to stay mobile. The lack of ap can be mitigated by the one warlord trait (forget the name).

The stalker bolter I'd recommend this for objective holders. Maybe a 10 man squad you can split.

For the most part, the standard bolt rifle is most universally useful. It has great range which is always nice.

I think if you don't know what role you want, the boltrifle is the best bet.

If You're using white Scars chapter trait, I'd recommend assault bolt rifles, as they benefit a lot for being able to advance.

Stalkers are fine, but they really encourage you to keep the unit stationary, so if you are taking a couple of small squads to hold objectives, that's not a terrible choice.

In chapter approved, you'll be able to add power fists to your squad leaders, which could be fun.

From a modeling point of view, all three weapons look basically the same, so far as I'm aware. They are three different flavors of the same weapon.

They are varients on the same weapon, but can have a drastic difference in how the squad operates.

Yes, but as the OP was asking from a *painting* POV, it makes zero difference to the model. The kit only contains one type of bolter (to my knowledge), even if they can represent three different weapons.

I missed that part ha ha.

The bolters do all look a bit different (they have different magazines), but I'm sure if you don't know, you would be able to immediately tell the difference.

I believe you mean the Assault Bolter here.  Stalker Bolter is Heavy 1 with better AP.

Outside of Deathwatch, I'm not sure how much I would lean on the assault bolters.  Deathwatch have the special issue ammunition, which can compensate for the loss of range and AP compared to the standard bolt rifles.

With regular Marines, you're gaining 1 shot in the 15-24" range, but losing 1 AP at 0-15" and losing 6" of maximum range with the assault bolter.  If you are confident you can keep your enemy more than 15" away, then they're a good choice over the standard bolt rifle.  But I'm not totally convinced the trade-offs are worth it.  (But I'm a Deathwatch player, so my experience using the normal Marine codex is limited.)

I'm not personally sure I would ever recommend the Stalker Bolter -- except on Captains, where it's either stalker or assault.  Yes, the extra range and AP are useful, but so is the ability to move and fire without penalty, and doubling your shots at shorter ranges.

If you want to use Stalker Bolters, they're definitely going to be a backfield unit, parked on an objective.  But I see that sort of a unit as a supporting element to the core of Intercessors armed with bolt rifles.

I would agree with this.  It's a good all-around choice.  For a first unit I'd go for these, play a game or two, and decide which (if any) of the specialist bolters you feel would fit best with your play style.

From a game play point of view, I’d model them with regular bolt rifles.  They’re the best all rounders with regards to range, power and rate of fire.

Just following up, I ended up putting regular bolt rifles on my first squad. They seem solid all around, and the regular model is close enough to the stalker scope I doubt anyone would mind if I swapped in a friendly game.

... so. I love these models. But did gw seriously not even put a power sword on the spruce? I’m kind of miffed about that.

I mean, I knew there was no fiat since that’s a new option, but not even a sword? That’s.... grumble grumble.

Grumbling aside: question.

What’s the best way to get a sword for them? eBay bits, I guess?

I have no regular marines to compare... is a egular marines sword arm/holding fist interchangeable on the primaries guys? Or would the scale be (slightly) off? My guy says it would be a bit off, but I really don’t know.

.... one last question.

I’m priming the models and painting them in three potions: arms and gun, main body/legs/head, and back pack. I want to do a howling griffons paint job, and was worried I couldn’t manage the quartering in a neat fashion if I assembled it all at once.

I’ve heard of putty stuff you can use to keep things in place when priming/painting, without having it glued. I don’t know what this putty is though. Green stuff would turn hard and bind and is no good.

Could anyone link me to something I could use for this? I’d appreciate it (assuming external links are allowed by the rules).

Thanks!

Was hesitant at first, but I’m getting excited about this project.

For my Sergeants I did one with a power sword that was a simple hand transplant from the DW accessory sprue to one of the handless arms from the Intercessors. For the other I used one of the chain bayonets from Forge World as a chainsword stand-in.

I did a dry-fit earlier today, and normal SM powerfist arms look like they should fit just fine on the Intercessor bodies should you want to take advantage of CA'18
