Knight? Sounds good and cannot be confused with anything important. Go for it.

Vortex is also a problem, as vortex bombs/missiles are a particularly nasty form of munitions.

The "X" is too likely to be confused with "Xenos", IMHO.  Better to make up a famour general to use their name... perhaps Xerces?

Additionally, how could an Imperial call sign NOT use Emperor for "e"? 8)

Quite so. It cannot even be mixed up, because... well, you seldom see the guy himself on a battlefield.

Emperor is too commonly used in [their] ordinary speech. Thus makes a poor call sign due to easy confusion.

I don't know if 'Knight' is the best option.
It seems to me that having a word that starts with a silent letter is not the best option for a phonetic alphabet.
Albeit, that it can't be confused with Nova... IMHO it's not a great choice.

The military alphabet doesn't really have anything to do with codes.  It gives everyone no matter where they are the ability to spell a word.   Let's use my home town for an example.   Milwaukee.   Now have someone say from; wisconsin, Aalabaama, England, Germany, Russia, New Zealand, say that word over a radio with a little bit of static.  Pretty hard to be understood.  So instead you spell it, using an Alphabet that everyone knows.

Mike, India, Lima, Whiskey, Alpha, Uniform, Kilo, Echo, Echo

Of course you typically only do this for the important words in a msg or those that the receiving end ask you to repeat, but it works.

They could. Tau, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Orks, renegade IG, Chaos marines, any form of Chaos really, daemon, traitor, they can all speak to humans in some form. Necrons cannot, and tyranids cannot. Other than that....

I think Fugitive blew this thread up with some awesome ideas.  I do like Extremus, but I would have to agree that some my find hersay in using another word other than Emperor, even with its commonplace in normal speech.  A coulpe other sugestions:

Hersay or , Emperor forbid it; Horus, may work for H. Hydra?
I dont like Furioso as thats at least to me strickly Blood Angels and could refer to a Dreadnought in battle, how about Fidelus? (Latin for loyal or Fateful)
Quadrant I can see in military speech, especially in the 41st millenium, and the vastness of space, perhaps Quake? Quiver? Quench, Quest....Q is really tough, good luck.
Obey or Obidience
Signum is great, but concider Savior?
Templar or Terminus
Viva (life)or Virtue or some dirivitive there of. Virtuous, Verti ect..
You ignorant Mon-keigh and your rotting corpse of a god, may Khaine strike you down swift and true and ease your suffering.

Ankhet come play a fun online game.

Necrons cannot
Recently retconned with the evolving Necron fluff. Some Necron Lords have adapted themselves to be able to speak the languages of the younger races, as can Pariahs and (it's implied) some Immortals. Necrons are no longer totally silent, and while a little bit of the scare factor goes away at that point, I really prefer the new fluff to the old. The Necron's really needed a little character in their army, and the new focus on Lords and (to a lesser degree ) Immortals as thinking, sentient beings really goes a long way towards providing that.

Remember that the words have to be used without confusion and without sounding like one and another. So words like emperor and obey are too common in ordinary speech and thus less than useful in this circumstance.
