Warhammer Fantasy/Old world books???
« on: September 20, 2021, 08:26:23 PM »
What are the best books to read through for the pre-AoS Warhammer Fantasy world. Is there a core series like Horus Heresy series for 40k? If note what the best High Elves and Lizardmen novels?

I can't speak to "best," since I didn't find them very good, but the Gotrek and Felix series is light fun and they read pretty quick. Bought a 3-volume omnibus once upon a time and read 2/3s of it before I decided to quit.

Fantasy never had a flagship series like the Horus Heresy, but it did have a sort of equivalent in the sense of a series of prequel novels explaining the distant background of larger-than-life character. It was called "Time of Legends" and there were books (possibly series) about Sigmar, Nagash, Aenarion, iirc. Not sure what else.

Aside from Gotrek and Felix, which is perhaps the most well-known novels series form Warhammer Fantasy, there are also the Malus Darkblade novels. I've never read them, but he stands along with with G&T as one of those fan-favorite characters.

FWIW, I always recall fondly remembering Drachenfels back in the day. Not a series, though.

I do remember reading through Defenders of Ulthuan, which was kinda fun from a content perspective (interesting info) but not from a writing one (not fantastic).

I did have some more time for the Malus Darkblade novels, but that was Dan Abnett and as a general rule he does better than most of the other authors in the BL stable.
