Title: The Ninja Project (Mostly Eldar - sometimes other dudes)
Post by: Partninja on November 7, 2017, 08:47:20 PM
So I have recently sold A LOT of my old Eldar range. A lot of them were from before 4th edition that I got for really cheap. Some of them were just painted poorly and I want to revamp my collection. This Plog will be mostly Eldar related but I will likely post about my Blood Angels (Flesh Tearers), Necrons, and Scions armies as I see fit.

To start off I'll share some conversion work I'm doing. Painted models will come a little later once I figure out a better setting to light them properly.

First up some a sample of my converted Shining Spears. I had several unopened boxes of the old jetbike kits. I used those along with some Dark elf bitz from ebay:

And an Autarch Skyrunner (using obvious bitz):

Swooping hawk Exarch, and normal trooper with hacked scourge wings:

Since Fire Prisms get to fire two shots now, I felt it fitting to give them two cannons:

Currently I'm still digesting the new codex. I was initially going to run a Biel-tan focused list for most games. However, at 1500 points I'm finding it difficult to fit enough shuriken weapons in (to make the bonus worth it) while still having a few aspect units. The aspect units felt super lack luster without getting much benefit and preferring other craftworld bonuses. I just really liked the Biel-tan stratagem. I'll likely be going with a more "warp ninja" theme using mostly Alaitoc. This craftworld will be making use of altered holofield technology that utilizes the warp to skew the area around them.

G'day Partninja!
WOW! They're all looking Micky Mouse. How samurai does that Shining Spear look? Nice touch to the Autarch and I hope you magnetized the fire prism, mate. Rules change with every edition, so as good as it looks now it may be out of place in 9th.

Thanks for sharing/inspiring, Partninja. You've done a remarkable job so far... Be well!

That double-barreled fire prism is just awesome! Those scourge wings are also just so sweet on the hawks. I had to convert mine the same way, as the wings they come with are just rinky-dink.

Keep em coming. Can't wait to see some paint on those bad boys.

The first autarch has a samurai feel to it :)

The scourge wings on the swooping hawks looks awesome, but after playing with scourges, I would probably restrict it to the exarch.

The double barren fire prism reminds me of the scorpion :)

@ Magenb-
The first model is a Shining Spear. They all will look this way.

The Autarch is specifically different so that he can fit different lists. His head is pinned so I might swap it for something else when I think of something more suitable. Was thinking of putting the "samurai horns" on a storm guardian helmet

I like the way the Scourge wings look on the group of 6 I have done so far. The Exarch will be painted a little different to make him stand out (the tall and flat pose of the wings makes him stand out as well).

The scorpion was part of the inspiration for sure.

@Saim-hann:
Yep it's magnetized don't worry. Although it's pretty fiddly. Even if they lose the double shot ability I was planning on modeling them this way anyway. It just looks cool.

@dog_of_war:
Thanks for the kind words dude.

---------------------------------

If anyone was curious this is the first list I'm mulling around for the moment. I have points left and haven't picked a relic or warlord trait yet. Also not sure I'm going to use an Autarch at all yet. Still very work in progress. It's a battalion and one smaller elite detachment for the extra CP. Both Alaitoc. 3CP will to put the Banshees and the Guardian blob in the webway. The Spiders and Hawks will also likely start in reserves.

Autarch Skyrunner - Laser Lance (108)
Warlock Skyrunner (70)
5x Rangers (60)
5x Rangers (60)
20x Guardian Defenders (160)*
10x Howling Banshees - Executioner (133)*
Fire Prism - Spirit Stones (165)
Fire Prism - Spirit Stones (165)
Spiritseer (45)
10x Swooping Hawks (130)*
6x Shining Spear - Star Lance (188)
10x Warp Spiders - Exarch 2x Death Spinners (188)*
28

Hey Ninja! Off to an EXCELLENT start! Super, super clean conversions and kitbashes. The wings on Hawks are beyond awesome and I love the Spear conversions. Also a note on the Autarch... I'm pretty sure GW wants people to use the Avenger Exarch as an Autarch as the foot Autarch features a beefed up version of the Avenger Glaive, so I think it was a timely conversion on your part and one that looks very suitable. Also, the double barelled Prism... yeah pretty much in love with that.

How are you going to paint them? Are you going to Biel-Tan colors? Or something unique? Fascinated to know. I'm looking forward to seeing color on those Spears!

I'm suprised you are down on the Aspects is it just how they couple with Biel-Tan? Cause I'm super stoked on my Aspect Warriors. Especially the guys more suited for rumbling with Guard.

As for your list it looks really good IMO. My only concern would be a bit more anti-tank and perhaps trying to squeeze a second Warlock in there so you could have Quicken and Protect. But if you are facing lots of infantry on think this list should pummel. The Spiders, Hawks and (Webway Strike?) Guardians should obliterate hordes. I'm planning on something very similar. Iyaden might suit too... keep those Prisms full operational, longer and those big squads will have great morale control. Just a thought.

Anyway so glad you hopped on the Project Logs. I think you are off to a hot start with these really cool conversions. You've really modernized these classic sculpts and I'm loving what I see so far. Great stuff Ninja keep us posted!

I'll be using my own color pallet of red, black and white.

I'm not down on the Aspects, just for a Biel-tan I feel they don't benefit since other than Avengers they don't make a large use of shuriken weapons. The LD boost is "meh" to me. I do really like the stratagem though (specially with scorpions). This is why I'm looking more towards Alaitoc now.

This first list will be mostly a trial of the updated units. At my LGS there aren't a ton of vehicles at 1500 points. The ones that do use several are usually weaker vehicles anyway so the spiders and shining spears can help out if needed.

Nice work :) interesting that 'samurai' was my first thought when I saw the Shining Spear too, and I'm a little bit enamoured with your regular Scourge-Hawk conversion. The pose just strikes me as completely natural and fluid; wings, legs and gun posed exactly where they would be if he was just taking off from his base. Nicely done!

-Alaitoc -
Warlock -  Quicken/Restrain - Shiftshroud(35)*
Warlock Skyrunner - Singing Spear  - Empower/Enervate (75)
5x Rangers (60)
5x Rangers (60)
20x Guardian Defenders - 2x Shuriken Cannon (190)*
10x Howling Banshees - Executioner (133)*
Fire Prism - Spirit Stones (165)
Fire Prism - Spirit Stones (165)
-Alaitoc-
Autarch Skyrunner - Laser Lance (108)
10x Swooping Hawks - Hawk’s Talon(133)*
6x Shining Spear - Star Lance (188)
10x Warp Spiders - Exarch 2x Death Spinners (188)*

This will be the first codex list I run on Sunday. Not sure what list my friend will be bringing (he plays Orks, DE, Harlies and Death watch). Also not sure which warlord trait I'm giving the Autarch yet.

This is mostly a list to experiment with the above units and see how they perform. If a unit has a "*" it means it will probably/potentially start in reserves (either naturally or webway).

Nice. This actually feels like a super classic list. Like a 2nd of 3rd ed list... which is so awesome. Its great to see these kinds of lists again. Classic. I'm surprised you are all in on those Spiders though. I think they are good for sure, especially with Fire+Fade and Alaitoc for -2 to hit. I wouldnt take them out by any stretch I'm just curious why you went 10 strong and what you see them going after. In fact I'd like to know what you think their ideal targets are going forward. I think they'll be great against infantry, but I'm hoping Tyranids become resurgent because I think they'd be great going against stuff like Hive Guard, Warriors and the sort of mid-class bugs.

Also I whole heartedly agree with your deepstriking plans. I like the asterisk to denote that. Gotta include that in my lists.

Anyway love the list. Give us a little bat-rep if you can. I'm trying to gather as much intel as possible. Good luck Ninja and again love the list!

I'm usually not one for min squads on infantry units except for reapers, wraithguard and biker units. Partly OCD and partly I expect a few casualties and want the unit to still be effective.

I view spiders how I've always viewed them. A fast reactionary support unit. They put out a lot of shots, at a decent strength with a chance of cutting through some armor. Decent against infantry and can help put some wounds on lighter vehicles or medium sized models.

Edit: Not totally sold on an Autarch but I'm trying him out. I'm not expecting to make any CP back and I'm not sure how useful the hit rerolls will be. Thinking about giving him the Alaitoc warlord trait for the morale or perhaps just the extra wound and 6+++.

Reroll with the Spears are useful, for me they normally mean an extra couple of hits, so normally an extra kill.

True but for less points, a warlock could just increase their weapon skill. Granted, the warlock itself wouldn't have much punch itself.

The chances are against you for the warlock getting that spell off and it could still be blocked. Auratch is more points, but its buff just works and he is a beast on charge.

So I played my game today against my friends DE. I won, mostly because the open war mission utilized 3 objectives and had a win condition that allowed me to easily win. If you controlled all 3 by the end of the round, you automatically won. I went second and was able to hold my objective and have more models on the other two than my opponent. I also had a bit of luck in that I was able to webway the Banshees, infiltrate the one warlock with shiftshroud, and get off quicken on the Banshees.

He also had a more experimental list so I don't want to give a total play by play. I do have a few notes.

Webwaying 20 guardians is pretty good. They still really want Doom and/or guide support (or the Ulthwe black guardians stratagem). It took all of their shooting to kill 7 wracks leaving one model..They did have a 6+++, and buffed from the Homong HQ.

Swooping Hawks. Not sold on these guys yet. Their range and deep strike works well for Alaitoc. They have a lot of shots but the strength of those shots just isn't there. I like them as a back line harassment unit and doom might not always be available. It took all of their 40 shots to just barely kill 5 warriors in a piece of terrain. They were ultimately killed. By a small counter unit of Mandrakes who are pretty good. If you face a lot of T3 armies I can see them being a must have every time. Verdict still out on these.

Warp Spiders - Total bosses now that they can deep strike again. They killed two Ravagers with average rolls and put the hurt on a Talos engine thing. Flicker jump and excellent movement kept them from losing a single model alone. Didn't even need to throw any saves. Great against infantry and can definitely help against lighter MC/AV.

Fire Prisms - These were among my favorite models when I started. I was pretty unlucky with my rolls. Wiffed a lot of their shots trying to take out his two raiders. When I did get to roll damage, I rolled a lot of 1s and 2s. At one point I gave up and just tried some dispersed shots and rolled pretty poorly on my 2D6. Not saying they're bad. I got pretty unlucky, but I feel Reapers would have been more consistent. The higher strength and AP of those lance shots can be really useful though.

Shining Spears - Sadly my opponent seized initiative (in fact, he's seized all 8 games against me this edition...WTF) and they were shot up on turn one losing 3 models. The last three destroyed a raider by themselves though between shooting and overkill in assault. Definitely a good all around similar to the Warp Spiders. I had wanted to fling these guys across the table with quicken bit they didn't get a chance to.

Banshee bombs - Didn't realize their acrobatic extra movement is contingent upon having also advanced. So I'm not going to use them this way. It would require quicken or the Biel-tan strat but then I could just do that with Scorpions/Spears (if Biel-tan) or quicken some Wraithblades instead. Or just drop some D-scythes or other such shooty unit honestly...

Autarch - Specifically take one for the reroll bubble. I was only able to recover one command point of my 7. This is statistically correct but not worth forcing him to start on the table or be taken at all. The rerolls for free is useful and helped the guardians and Spears get some work done. A Farseer with doom or guide is good too assuming the enemy doesn't have a good chance to deny.

Congrats on the win Ninja. I'm surprised by some of the results though. I 20 Guardians to kill 6 Wracks seems incredibly porr. I'm guessing they were T5 though? It seems weird because I put more wounds on Biker Librarians with only 15 Shuriken Corsairs... but hey its a dice game. Surprised by the results with the Hawks too. Your opponent must have had fire dice to survive 40 shots from the Hawks. I had awesome luck with their lasblasters in 7th ed and I was only running 6. They'd regularly tear up IG Veteran Squads... Very happy to hear about the Spiders though.

Also I'm not sure why you dont want to Advance with the Banshees? Is it because you are Webwaying them in?

Anyway fascinating stuff. I've got my big game against a super competitive IG player so... looking forward to see how I do. Excited to compare notes. Anyway great stuff and thanks for keeping us posted

Yes. When I say "Banshee Bomb" I am deep striking them with the webway.

Thanks wracks were infact being buffed by an HQ. Not saying 20 Guardians is bad, just that I didn't happen to roll well. Against a lot of targets they'll still want some sort of reroll help (hits and/or wounds).

Agreed, mate, Guardians are way better with guide/doom. Especially when most of the time some of the rerolled wounds become 6's. Your opponents just love it... Pointy ears forever!!

My Russian not-warp spiders came in today.

Took about a month from payment to arrival (I ordered them from ebay). I ordered two groups of five. Each group was in a plastic bag, and they were both wrapped in bubble wrap. Detail is pretty good. A few bubble spots. Minor flash. Found one broken bit (one fin on the front of a spinner. I can make a new one) and the waist area on the legs has spots so thin there is a hole...Once the torso is glued in it's easily filled in. Overall happy with them. Taking a break from my tedious Shining Spears conversion to work on these.

I had actually debated on ordering those myself, as the sculpts are really nicely done and they fit in so naturally to the official design aesthetics.   I just debated on it and went for the GW ones incase I play at the store.  I managed to get myself the wargames female warp spider exarch which I am using more as a autarch than the exarch.

That is a bummer on the post and the bubbles, makes you wonder if they are resin or GW's finecast material.   They could have just been rushed poured but still, you would hope for better quality when it arrives.

Wow! What a haul! Super jealous... those sculpts are amazing. How many did you get? Looks like 30! Any idea how you are gonna paint them? Unique Aspect colors or matching colors for your Craftworld? Can't wait to see these painted up and also see how they perform in games. I'm very intrigued

Can't wait to see what those Spiders come out looking like. They really are amazing sculpts. It's such a shame that you've got to work with them to bring them up to scratch though.

Also, I'm loving that Fire Prism. Great idea on the dual cannon.

Good to see these models finding their way all over the world :) What I love about them is that they are very true to both scale and the distinct GW overall visual style of all Eldar, while still retaining all clearly recognisable Spider features.

Regarding the sculpt, what I noticed while assembling mine was that the shoulder sockets seem a bit too deep. So I added a little Milliput to the bottom of each shoulder socket, so that the 'balls' don't sink too deep into them, making the shoulders look a little broader.

I ordered two sets of 5 for a total of 10. The Exarch comes with all three gun options (spinner, dual spinners, rifle) as well as blades, two head options, and a cape (I probably won't use the cape but use it on another model).

They will probably be painted very close to their traditional aspect color as their black, red and white pallet matches my army pallet.

Overall happy with them. Taking a break from my tedious Shining Spears conversion to work on these.

Thanks for the heads up. I just got done trimming, washing and organizing the first five.

I think I'm going to use some left over drop pod bits (all the stuff that goes inside) on their bases to help emphasize their agile/mobile/animated look.

Very good idea.
You'd also want to pin them to the bases, as most of them are balancing on the ball of one foot.

1500 point get today. Trying an all Biel-tan list this time. Want to see what mass shuriken will do.

-Biel-Tan
Farseer Skyrunner - Executioner, Mindwar(130)
Spiritseer - Protect/Jinx (45)
5x Dire Avengers - Exarch 2x Catapults (64)
5x Dire Avengers - Exarch 2x Catapults (64)
-Wave Serpent - Twin-Shuriken Cannon, Shuriken Cannon, Vectored, Stones (154)
20 Guardian Defenders (160)*
10x Striking Scorpions - Scorpion’s Claw (152)*
-Biel-tan-
Warlock Skyrunner  - Spirit Stone of Anath’lan - Quicken/restrain (70)
3x Windriders - Shuriken Cannons (84)
3x Windriders - Shuriken Cannons (84)
5x Shining Spears - Star Lance (157)
-Biel-Tan
Autarch Skyrunner - Banshee Mask, Laser Lance, Fusion gun (125)
Vyper - 2x Shuriken Cannon (70)
Vyper - 2x Shuriken Cannon (70)
Vyper - 2x Shuriken Cannon (70)

EDIT:

So I lost. I lost due to some tactical error on my part, but mostly because the objective and deployment type we drew from the open war cards played RIGHT into my opponent's strengths. Harlequins are very powerful due to their speed. We roll the deployment where you play the long way of the table and there was no dead zone in the center. The objective was 3 markers in each deployment zone. As soon as you controlled one, it went away. You have removed the other opponents markers first wins. Even with the markers as far back I could put them, and bubble wrapping as best I could, the sheer distance the Harlies can move-advance-assault put me at a disadvantage. My opponent also went first, again (we're still using old rules as our chapter approved book shows up later this week). He was also really good at making 4++ saves. Very frustrating.

Some notes:

I don't think Biel-tan is very good, even if I faced an army to make better use of the my blade storm rolls. I didn't feel like I even got to reroll enough 1's to make it worthwhile.

Scorpions FAILED to shadowstrike and charge again! And I even used the stratagem where I only needed a 6" charge (rolls a 4+1)! I should have saved an extra CP to reroll the one bad roll (I was on my last two) and made a poor judgement in spending 1CP to save a windrider earlier on. Wouldn't have mattered in either case as I wouldn't have claimed my opponents objectives fast enough anyway. Just sad they keep failing charges. I'm not sure how people are being so successful with their 9" charges...

Autarch continues to be a beast on his own though. Wrecked a vehicle single handedly. Probably the only exceptional roll I made all game.

Farseer with Executioner and Mindwar put out a lot of mortal wounds. He killed a whole 6-man troupe on his own getting a lucky 6 mortal wounds from Executioner, and almost punking a shadowseer with Mindwar.

All of my units worked as intended, for the most part. Just he was making his crucial invulnerable saves and had way more speed. Their built in hit-and-run is also extremely annoying. I think the Harlies as a stand alone army are quite under rated. At least semi-competitively.

Not much more to say as I lost turn two. My opponent agreed I played almost to the best of my ability. The few tactical error I made wouldn't have mattered.

I think Biel-tan is best served for just a specialized smaller detachment if you needed to leverage the rerolls without wanting them to be assisted by an HQ (autarch bubble, guide) or spending CP (black guardians).

G'day Partninja!
Loved this style of battle report, mate. Give the list then the outcome. I like it. Sounds like all the bad roles were a big factor in your loss. There's a bloke in our circle that seems to pull out 6's whenever he wants. We call him Mr Yahtzee. Thanks for the heads up... Pointy ears forever!!

Man you are lucky... I wish I could play against Harlies. Its a non-stop Imperial parade where I live. I think Harlies are EXCELLENT. Totally under rated... one of the more lethal CC armies out there and damn hard to get to grips with invulns and shooting modifiers all over the place. Their Chapter Approved buffs are really nice as well.

Yeah I like that bat-rep style as well. Thinking of doing something similar just to save on time!

About the Scorpions... yeah I dont trust that 9" charge at all. Thats why I'm running the Shroudshift Warlock/Spiritseer + Quicken with them. At the same time I think there was a major missed opportunity with the CW dex to give each of the Aspects a stratagem. Something re-roll charges would've been really huge... for Scorpions I was hoping for a -1 to hit in cover or something along those lines. Oh well.

Anyway great stuff Ninja. Harlies are a tough match-up and sometimes you just cant beat blazing hot dice. Still looking forward to those Warp Spiders... and more bat-reps. Thanks bud

Nice BatRep Ninja. Sounds like anyone would have had a tough time against a hot rolling opponent and that particular mission. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the Bonesinger. Mine arrived too, but he's not exactly at the front of the queue for painting...

Harlies are actually quite strong, there's no arguing about that.

Quote
I'm not sure how people are being so successful with their 9" charges...
They aren't :) It's just that sometimes people get lucky and prefer to (or rather are subconsciously inclined to) remember that one occasion rather than all other less lucky ones. You can't be successful with a charge that has 28% chance to succeed, unless you're using loaded dice  ;)

I've been busy with work and the wife got me a Nintendo Swiitch for Xmas... However I have a few things on deck for after the new year:

Forgeworld Avatar - I might commission this one out. I don't have the skills or the patience to do the model justice.

Space Marine Scout squad

Some bits from eBay to finish my last two Shining Spears (to make my Exarchs).

Lots of storm guardian heads - a majority from a nice deal with Saim-Dann.

Played a game today against DE:

1500pts (on the dot)

-Alaitoc -
Farseer - Guide, WoA (100)
Warlock - Conceal/Reveal (35)
5x Rangers (60)
5x Rangers (60)
5x Rangers (60)
10x Swooping Hawks - Hawk's Talon (133)
10x Dark Reapers - Tempest Launcher (275)
Crimson Hunter Exarch (175)
-Saim-Hann-
Autarch Skyrunner - Banshee Mask, Nova Lance (108)
5x Shining Spears - Star Lance (157)
5x Shining Spears - Star Lance (157)
10x Warp Spiders (180)

Pretty happy with it's performance. We played the Chapter Approved mission of 6 objective markers (worth 1 VP at the end of each round) and destroying a unit gave 1 VP. I won 13 to 10. It was quite the slug fest. Nice even match up. I wish I could put the Warlock on a jetbike and take Protect/Jinx on him instead. Archons, Lilith and Wyches/Blood Brides are a pain with the invulnerable saves. I really don't want to reduce the body count on the other units to make the points. The Crimson Hunter wiffed two rounds of shooting the DE flyer...quite sad. I'm starting to debate taking the Autarch in this setup anymore. While he's quite good against a lot of things, he's not been so great at the things I need him to kill (other HQs). I might try reaper Autarch with wings (or foot) int he back lines instead with the sniper warlord trait. Would have been better served this game as he had quite a few characters. Still not totally sold are Hawks. They did pretty well this game, but they were more evenly matched since most of the infantry was T3. Still a very mobile unit for a decent price point.

I've also been busy on some conversions and finishing some of my back logged models.

Very proud of this pose. Hard to take a good picture of it but it looks very fluid and realistic in it's head long charge in person.

Finished all 10 of the Russian Warp Spiders. Gorgeous sculpts. I won't show them all here but here is one:

Finished my two Shining Spears Exarchs. I might add some more flair to them via some ribbon/streamers from the Wraithlord and Wraithguard kits.

And for a bit of heresy here are my Blood Angel's Librarian Dread and Captain! The Captain is kit bashed from Sanguinary Guard (chest/legs), Death Company, Vanguard Vets and Assault marine bits. The Libby Dread is a Forgeworld Chaplain dread I was just going to make a furioso. Popped a force halberd on him and I think it'll look pretty good once It's painted blue. The wings on the front will make it pretty fitting for my Blood Angels.

I have some various other things put together but nothing special. So much so I have completely ran out of room for my Eldar in my display cases. Running to Ikea this weekend to pick up a 3rd display case so each faction (Imperial, Necrons, Eldar) each get their own.

Currently need to chop pony tails off the bare storm guardian heads and attach them to my defender guardians in the mean time. Once that's sorted, and it stops raining every weekend here in New Jersey I can prime some of my simpler models (guardians) and start laying down some paint on them.

You really pack a lot into a post, mate. Great batrep. Short and sweet, just like me, and that Wraithlord?... Niiiiice! The wraith ribbons will look Micky Mouse on your SS Exarchs and keen to see the WS's together as a unit.

Loooooving the Lib Dread and the Captain. Well thought out and executed. Some paint wouldn't go astray though, mate. Really enjoying this journey your taking us on, Partninja... Pointy ears forever!!

Not so much a batrep but talking out loud about my findings.

Yes yes. Paint is coming. I do have some units painted but I haven't gotten around to getting decent quality photos for them. Hard to see the details the dip wash brings out. Just need to set up a better lighting rig for them.

Hey Ninja great stuff. Nice outing with your Eldar. I hear you on the Autarch going up against other HQ's. I rarely attempt that with Y'riel, the Visarch or my Jetbike Autarch simply because it was usually a recipe for disaster in 7th ed. I'm surprised the laser lance version doesnt do a bit better though. My usual tactic is to have my Autarch/Visarch beat up on infantry while I strip away the screening units and pummel the warlord with shooting. I'm a huge fan of the Hawks. I love their volume of fire and their mobility is awesome. Even against Marine type armies they can show up and kick out some support fire to take out units then Fade and Fire away. Anyway good win man, glad you taught the Dark Eldar who the true kin really are  ;D ;D ;D

Great job on the models. The Wraithlord looks fanatastic as do the Blood Angels. The Dreadnought is amazing and the Captain looks badass.

Also I'm almost done on your commission and its looking good! It just showed up on Saturday and so it should be done in the next 2 days. Anyway great stuff Ninja looking forward to seeing more.

That is a really impressive looking Wraithlord.  You've got the pose for an assault Wraithlord spot on and it's so dynamic and flowing too, thus epitomising the grace and speed of an Eldar walker.  Great work.

Also really interested to see what you do with those Russian Warp Spider sculpts, they are so much nicer than the GW sculpts and I've seen some beautifully painted examples. Can't wait to see what you do with them!

That wraithlord is a thing of beauty. You got the pose just right. Did you magnetize the cannons? I don't think you'd take anything other than cannons this edition, especially if you're giving him a blade, but you never know what the future holds.

That kit is probably my favourite in the whole eldar line. So much you can do with it.

No magnets on my Lords as it requires very tiny or the rectangular type which I didn't feel like tracking down.

My gaming area isn't too particular on WYSIWYG as long as it's written down and differences in units is identifiable. Most times my Lords will have two of the same weapons, and they'll all be equipped the same in the list. Simple to remember and keep track of for me and my opponent. We worry most about models looking cool.

If it's more simple to magnetize, like Predator variants, wave Serpents etc I do.

Nice! I find a lot of people go  bit wrong with wraithlord posing (way too dynamic and lively), but you've done a brilliant job of a pose that imparts movement but in a languid, fluid way :)

I like :)

Ran an Ulthwe list list against my buddies Death Watch. It was a slug fest where I ended up tabling him with not much left myself (just my characters, wraithguard, and a few Dire Avengers). We rolled the mission where you start with 6 objective markets but 4 go away on turn 3. My list mostly only did well as pure DW is usually a fairly low model count and I didn't have many units myself.

-Ulthwe-
Avatar of Khaine (250)
Farseer Skyrunner - Doom, Executioner (130)
10x Dire Avengers (120)
10x Dire Avengers (120)
20x Guardian Defenders - 2x Shuriken Cannon (190)
5x Wraithguard - D-Scythes (225)
5x Shining Spears - Star Lance (157)
5x Shining Spears - Star Lance (157)
-Ulthwe-
Spiritseer - Conceal/Reveal (45)
Warlock Skyrunner - Protect/Jinx (70)
Warlock - Quicken/Restrain (35)

My take away thoughts:

Giving the Farseer executioner, the blades warlord trait, and using the 6s to hit gives extra hits is a really strong when comboed with any non power weaponed type unit. This did a lot of work on his infantry and characters.

Executioner is stupid good.

Dire Avengers - I wish they had two attacks. I'd pay an extra points or two for it. I got pretty lucky with my overwatch two times really hurting the units that charged them. A shimmer shield would have been very handy this game. I think it's worth taking if you're running a lot of units on foot.

Avatar - is a beast. Actually gets work done on characters with good invulnerable saves (3++). Only one wound got through on each of his captains but wasted them with good damage rolls. Also wrecked his flier alone (which had to go in hover mode in order to do anything turn 2). He's a bit hard to get to the combats you need though.

Shining Spears continue to be good. This game not so much for their shooting and assault but for absorbing damage..took two turns of a lot of shooting (and assaults) to kill them all. They didn't do much else but it kept all my guardians and Avengers untouched for two crucial turns.

The tomb world is stirring...

Hey Ninja, totally agree with you Executioner. Such an awesome power especially if you have a Farseer escorting something into a danger zone and you need punch. I'd go nuts if Avengers got 2 attacks. I always thought it'd be sick if they had a close-combat option...even just a chainsword option as they are sort of the "balanced" Aspect where the whole Path of the Warrior began.

So glad to hear your Avatar is doing well too! Reece from FLG runs an Avatar in like every list. He's got a Dire Avenger themed Brigade with the Avatar, Asurmen and a Autarch with wings.

Awesome to see you getting the Necrons ready for games. I've got a small collection that I'm sorely tempted to revisit once I finish up the World Eaters and Dark Angels. Especially with their crazy new Codex. Those stratagems tho.... lol

Great stuff bud!

I swear I paint stuff some times... Here's proof!

WIP painting my Necrons! Starting with my Immortals for now. I'm priming them with Corax. Then a wash with a 50/50 mix of Nihilakh Oxidide and some medium to let it flow better. Looks chalky in the photos and not as shaded/dark in the crevices but it's way better looking in person. Going with blue glowy bits for the guns and eyes. Guns I'm planning on doing in gunmetal for now. Might try a bone wash on the guns and see how that looks too. Bases will be a red cracked earth. Bottoms of their feet look weird because I swapped them from their original bases to 32's. That will be hidden by the basing.

That's a really original look that's for sure.

I really like it but I think it could use a bit more variety. Did you think about doing a darkenof nightshade wash first then this wash. It might had a bit more variation of color from underneath. Would kill the monotony of it a bit.

Or do a different color on some of the mechanical part, but I'm guessing you planned that already. Since it's still a wip.

I'm really interested in seeing where this is going to go. Good luck!

I love it! Damn that looks awesome! It reminds me of how Grizz is painting his Avengers. I may have to steal this from you if I ever decide to start a Necron army. Cant wait to see with the gunmetal on the guns. Wouldn't change a thing. Fantastic discovery bud I love it!

You are a genius Partninja, the use of a pastel shade to paint your Necrons has resulted in something that is refreshing to see and that works really well.

I don't know if it was intentional but what I really like about it is the chalky finish. For me the chalky finish makes the model look old and worn which, considering how old the Necrons are supposed to be, is a brilliant effect.

I also like how the use of the pastel shade makes the model look like it could be made from ceramic or something that is not just metal. Again, a very suitable effect for Necrons.

I am really looking forward to seeing how these turn out and in seeing if you can keep up the chalky finish across all of your models.

I love the idea of the Nihilakh Oxide Necrons. It really is something quite different and I think that, judging by the test model, it's going to work very well.

Great stuff, I look forward to seeing a finished model.
Title: Re: The Ninja Project (Mostly Eldar - sometimes other dudes)
Post by: Partninja on June 9, 2018, 06:18:02 PM
Thanks bunches for the encouragement guys.

I admittedly stole the idea from the way a lot of people paint their AoS ghouls and what-nots. Definitely wanted a pale ghostly look. Planning to keep the green as is with no other shading as it will darken it too much. As I said it looks less monotone in person and more mottled/shaded in the crevices. Hard to get a good pic.

Haven't had a chance to get to the guns yet other than laying on some black before the gun metal. I'll probably do some sort of light wash on the gun metal (maybe green or a blue) just so it blends in a bit. I'll likely need to do a lighter blue  highlight on the cables going into their backs.

What a novel idea dude :) never considered using nihilakh as a wash. Looks great, and the sort of thing that will look better and better the bigger the group you have.

Definitely worth doing a test model with a few dabs of Drakenhof. Not all over, but selectively in places like eyesockets to give them a sunken look. Ghostly, but stare into their eyes and the void opens beneath them ;)
