"Complete Catalogue and Hobby Reference." - worth it?
« on: November 9, 2005, 05:16:37 PM »
I just wanted to see if anyone had any opinions on this book.

http://store.us.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.us?do=List_Models&code=305239&orignav=305239&GameNav=305239

It seems like it would be a good reference to have if one was trying to plan out conversions and whatnot, but that would depend largely on how well put-together it is.

Opinions?

nice to have in the stores, I dont spend enough on the game to make it worth owning. I tend to browse models online to see what would be usefull.

I just got mine in the mail two days ago.  Wow.  I can't believe how big that thing is!  I was surprised, and even more surprised that it is hardbacked.

For those people who like to flip through and daydream about which new armies they would love to make, the guide is fantastic.  For those people who are constantly searching for the right bit for their conversion, the guide is fantastic.

The tactical information inside is ok, with good advice, but not complete for any army.  The painting stuff is decent, though I've seen most of the advice in other formats (the GW website, White Dwarf, and codexes).  I've even seen a lot of the featured models before.  So this is less exciting to me.

But if you are new to the game, or don't get white dwarf, then you may find LOTS of great things inside.

I felt that my money was well spent.  I'll be pouring over that catalog for MONTHS to come.  I've got lots of conversion ideas floating around in my head, and this will help me find every part that I need.

I too think it's a possibility for buying. I saw it at my GW store and I agree, it's pretty big. If your looking for some converting pieces, new army ideas, cool minis, possible paint schemes or just want prices and parts, this is probably a good use of money...

I started playing Tau three years ago, and now I'm dating a supermodel. Coincidence? I think not.

Yeah, if you guys will use it, that's why GW made it. I personally dont have the use for it... but heavy modelers like you guys will.

I didnt know it also had paint tips too, that's also a neat thing to have when getting it.

my store has an open customer copy so I can just go in, sit down at an open work table and flip thru. Which is very handy now and then.

I got last years edition for free when I visited the GW U.S headquarters.
It was kind of nice to have around if I wanted to look up a model and didn't
have a computer nearby, or just didn't want to go on my computer.
But I don't think I would spend money on it.

Yes, my store has a customer open copy too, it replaced the old binders they used to have so we could do bitz orders.

Very good, I looked through the old binders so many times the pages fell apart.. looking for conversion bitz.

It's kind of fun to look at when you need a break from painting your army, it's not really essential or anything. Although I have to say, GW does have a catalog for models not currently in fashion (I believe they are called "Classics") that might be worth owning. Then I could get all those Crusader armoured space marines I want!
