Scratch built Ork Deffjets (counts as Deffkoptas) [Pictures!]
« on: February 26, 2008, 06:07:11 PM »
I'm currently working on an Ork army. I want Deffkoptas in the army, but I want them to be more like jetbikes, so I created my own and named them Deffjets.

I currently have 5 of them almost completely done. They just need bases. 5 more are about 25% done. They are all based on Space Marine bikes, with the engine and rear wheel replaced by a scratch built jet engine. However, that doesn't mean they all look the same, no sir! They will all be different from each other, as I think it's proper orky!

Here are the first five:

Deffjet #1 WIP (Twin-linked Big Shootas)

Deffjet #2 WIP (Twin-linked Rokkit Launchas + Buzzsaw)

Deffjet #3 WIP (Twin-linked Big Shootas)

Deffjet #4 WIP (Twin-linked Big Shootas)

Deffjet #5 WIP (Twin-linked Rokkit Launchas + Buzzsaw (Well, huge klaw, actually... counts as Buzzsaw! ;D )

Agreed, most interesting ones so far. And effectively executed too.

Crit:

Number 5 seems quite unbalanced, unlike the others. I don't think it's the klaw. Rather the wings just seem so awkward with one side being the landspeeder rocket pod, while the other isn't.

Yes, definitely 'Star Warzy' on a couple, but that's quite alright. I saw a guy kit-bashing a Pod Racer into his deff koptas, so your in good company. Excellent all told. Even the Defiler Claw, while oversized, is a great concept.

My only argument is your weapon selection actually.... :p

hey there stitch,

i think your ork jetbikes are fantastic!!!!  ;D

im loving the concept of these bikes, but may i make a suggestion that you look at some form of VTOL propulsion. its only because they look like they move - solely forwards rather than actually hovering. hoverbikes are simply anti grav bikes, so some form of propulsion upwards would be cool, especially seeing as they are going to be proxy deffkoptas.

i commend your resourcefulness though, the warbike set must've been sooo much cheaper than the deffkoptas!

i may have to totally loot this idea for my own deffkoptas. Very nicely done!
The problem being, of course, that 'In the Grim Darkness of the Far Future Most of Us are Pretty Much Okay' doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

My friend used bitz of bikes to convert his into hover bikes, cutting wheels in half and putting them on sideways and onto various locations and using green stuff to make repulsor pads.

Wow! Thanks for all the positive feedback!  I'm glad you like 'em!

Now, some answers, and comments of my own:

Number 5 seems quite unbalanced, unlike the others. I don't think it's the klaw. Rather the wings just seem so awkward with one side being the landspeeder rocket pod, while the other isn't.

Yeah, I know!  ;D
I'm usually a slave to symmetry (just look at the other four models!), so I thought I'd try something different. I tried thinking like an ork, and just glued the rocket pod on there. Then I thought "What would an Ork Mek do to restore balance?" Answer: a spiky, evil looking wing. A friend came up with a great idea, though, when he saw it. He thought I should replace the little support bit under the wing with some hydraulics. To make it look like the rider can raise and lower the wing in mid flight, to compensate when the rokkit pod gets lighter after firing and stuff. I may do that. What do you think?

My only argument is your weapon selection actually.... :p

The actual composition of the two units look like this:

Fast Attack 1:
5 Deffkoptas
- 3 x Twin-linked Rokkit Launcha
- 3 x Buzzsaw

Fast Attack 2:
5 Deffkoptas
- 2 x Twin-linked Rokkit Launcha
- 3 x Buzzsaw

The plan is to aim the two units at a different tank each and just open the throttle, let loose as many rokkits as possible and then crash into them, letting the saws get to work. With this composition I can afford to lose a couple of jetz from each mob before they reach their target.  By the way, that's why the guys with the saws (and klaws!) have helmets. They're the ones crashing into tanks! ;D

If you have any input on the weapon selection, I'll be glad to read it!

im loving the concept of these bikes, but may i make a suggestion that you look at some form of VTOL propulsion. its only because they look like they move - solely forwards rather than actually hovering. hoverbikes are simply anti grav bikes, so some form of propulsion upwards would be cool, especially seeing as they are going to be proxy deffkoptas.

My friend used bitz of bikes to convert his into hover bikes, cutting wheels in half and putting them on sideways and onto various locations and using green stuff to make repulsor pads.

I've been toying with a bunch of different solutions for the "lift" problem. Originally, my concept ideas looked nothing like this. I only built #1 as a reference to Star Wars, for fun, but a lot of people in my gaming club "demanded" that I build the rest in the same style! ;D

Anyways, the original idea was to bolt on all manner of different looted stuff to create lift, like Tau drones, Space Marine jump packs, jet engines, etc. I may still do something like that, but I'm affraid that it may ruin the overall impression of the models. On the other hand, it may make them even cooler, and definately orkier... Any ideas?

(One idea was actually to have Tau drones in chains holding them up, like high tech helium balloons... But I decided against it... ;D )

What will they be, Bad Moons, Evil Sunz?
PAINT THEM!

I'm thinking Evil Sunz because of the speed factor, but I'm thinking Death Skullz because of the high loota factor. I haven't quite decided yet. Any thoughts?

Thanks for all the comments guys! Keep 'em coming!

The cheapest anti-grav modelling I can think of is use a flying base dome side down under each one then attach a couple of GS nodules to it. Have this attached by a centre piece to the bike so it sits about half a centimetre below the rest of the bike/copta.
What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.                      -Ecclesiastes 1:9
