The Black Legion scheme works really well! Simple but effective. I don't know the first thing about Battlefleet Gothic but the force seems a bit heavy on capital ships and light on escorts. Or is a 2:1 ratio pretty typical?

There is 6 more escorts but I don't have enough bases to go around at the moment!
You don't really have a force org chart, but the cruisers are the bread and butter of a BFG force, and for every two cruisers you can deploy a heavy cruiser (bigger guns), and for heavy three cruisers (including heavy cruisers) you can deploy a battleship (bigger guns, more toughness etc). You can have as many or as few escorts as you like.

Escorts are quick, manoeuvrable and have decent firepower... at the cost of durability, save arguably in numbers. For Imperials and Chaos they're special weapon teams not front line fighters.

Eldar and Orks often have a very escort heavy focus, Eldar because they're fast and mean so being fragile doesn't matter and the ork escorts aren't very fragile at all!

Getting back to project the first for little, we did paint some White Scars!

This is about 250 points. Plus three thunderhawks for earlier is another 350 points.

Aiming to work up to some 1000 point practice games at some point. GW thinks 2000 is a sensible points value but they can do one with that nonsense!

Thats a lot of parts for very tiny tanks!

Not that tiny maybe. Its nice you get enough spares to make the plasma turrets too, I built both since the twin autocannons look cool but who knows of they're good or not!

A 38.1 degree fever, a spacefaring-themed wall sticker in my son's room-turned impromptu sick bay and memories of this thread have wrought their magic. I am now obsessively researching Battlefleet Gothic. I've recovered from the fever so it's all good! :D

This game looks really great. I mean, nuclear weapon-toting space cathedrals? You've sold it really well here. I might hit you up later if I run out of things to read but for now this 25-year-old rabbit hole seems to run very deep indeed. Will be riding the wave of obsession for a good while till I get enough time again to get back to my Napoleonic painting projects.

One of us! One of us!

Its 40K at its most 40K, its Andy Chambers at peak performance where the rules, the fluff and the models all hit the spot perfectly. Get two small fleets printed to start and find someone to blast to pieces! Its a game of highs and lows, with all the 1999 style of big swings on small dice pools.

Heres a link to the current (community reviewed) rulebook:
BATTLEFLEET GOTHIC - RULES: OFFICIAL & NON OFFICIAL

This is Warp Rift the free fan e-zine, issue 43 is the most recent 20 years anniversary issue. Has a guest column from Andy Chambers himself as well as a nice summary of all the fleets. A good starting point.
Battlefleet Gothic @ Specialist Arms

I'm yet to find any really good video battle reports (to the point I'm considering making some!)
But this is Andy Chambers  talking about specialist games which is pretty cool (also a fun channel if you like old school GW designers talking about their work!)

Edit, been poking at this Fire Raptor some and not sure I'm happy with it. The cockpit frames are just painted on as a big wrap around windscreen felt not very armoured for a marine gunship...

I love that you're doing white scars as your imperialis legion - so daring to paint so much white with red on top!

Great stuff, looking forward to seeing that imperialis force nearer to completion!

I ain't dead.
Mostly been doing house renovations, having issues with contractors and then grumpily deciding to do it myself. So the only white I've been painting recently is Dulux trade white, and have gloss white to look forward to...

On the upside I bought a nail gun to do skirting boards and thats just great, because powertools. Hopefully back to painting fun stuff soon.

Glad you're alive and well, or at least as well as home renovations allow. :) That actually reminds me of some garden work I should be doing this weekend...

Looking forward to the fun stuff!

A couple of Sicarian battletanks got paint, problem is you take a picture of epic stuff and see bits that need touching up and then wonder if they need unit symbols and more markings. While the moulded detail looks great in photos they're still pretty tiny!

I'm in two minds if I like the Sicarian or not. It is kind of cool, but it feels almost too futuristic for 40K (30Kwhateves).

There's still some Sicarians rumbling around the battlefields of the 41st millennium or so I believe. I wouldn't care if I saw them in a game of epic. The Imperium bring out relics of war all the time!

They look good! I'd say try out the marking and see how they come out. They maybe tiny, but if you pull it off, that's a grand feat and some bragging rights!

30k walks a fine line between "oh, neat!" and "this just raises too many questions", but honestly if the Primaris can get all-hover tanks then I guess all bets are off. They're not quite the WW1-inspired dozers we're used, but they look nice and heavy.

I like the weathering on your paintjob.

PaxImperator

They look nice, if a bit on the futuristic end of the spectrum like you said.

Thank you! I'm trying to aim for 'White but a bit grubby' as I figure the White Scars run their machines hard and fast.
I'll give them another passfor more love and details I think.

I like the Heresy as a legend in the background more than a sharply detailed current event. On the other hand I've not kept up with 40K since 6th/7th edition maybe so the new stuff isn't my cup of tea there either.

So back to 40K that GW abandoned, I've signed up for another Epic Armageddon tournament! And the Crimson Fists are going back on duty as they're a complete-ish army.
Lets check the thunderhawk fleet!

These are the metals from 1997, somewhat undersized even for 6mm scale but brought the iconic Thunderhawk shape we've seen ever since.

So one is good, one missing wingtip guns and the third appears to have been used as a football and lost virtually every seperate part... I guess we're only flying two then!  :P

Ok, well the Epic Armageddon tournament is postponed until October for various reasons but in good news games are still on in a friendly capacity between the local players so best keep getting stuff ready.

These are not space marine scouts. They're 'elite recon troops' from a game called Defeat in Detail, a 6mm sci-fi wargame produced by a one man band miniature company. They'll make reasonable stand ins now they're arranged on GW bases as GW don't want to sell me any space marine scouts!

Got to fill in gaps in bases, then the Crimson Fists Scout company will be out in force.

Scouts are very useful in game, while not the most powerful units they can set up forward of the deployment zone, and have larger zones of control than regular units to represent them spreading out. This stops units force marching past and directly onto all your ojectives. (Eldar rangers do a similar job for example)

They look close enough to scouts to me. Looking forward to seeing them fully painted! I like how Epic seems to be able to better represent such light troops' true worth compared to 40K, where they mostly seemed to be just weaker tactical marines.

Guildmage Aech

And ready for battle!

Some hairspray used to hopefully keep flock on the bases. Has made them a bit shiny though...

Alas the Crimson Fist chapter symbol is but a red dot on a shoulderpad but I think its enough.

Scout units are pretty essential. Also units like Imperial Guard sentinels are seen protecting the area around an artillery company, to stop terminators teleporting in or fast units rushing into assault the artillery!

Tournament for this Saturday got postponed to October but a few locals are meeting up for friendly games anyway!
