First guard list since 4th ed - looking for suggestions
« on: July 14, 2014, 08:34:22 PM »
So, I haven't played a game of 40k in more than 6 years. Graduating college and going straight into the army kind of got in the way. But now I'm back, done a bit of reading, watching and listening, I've dusted off my old guardsmen, I picked up the new codex and I'm thinking I might try getting back into it a little.

After reading the new codex here's what I've come up with:

1500/1500
HQ: (240)
CCS
Vox-Caster
Astropath (dude's just here to generate more warp dice so the primaris psykers can spam prescience)
2x ML 2 Primaris Psykers

Troops:
Infantry Platoon 1: (250)
PCS
Vox-Caster

3x Infantry Squads
1 squad has a vox-caster
Each squad has a lascannon

Infantry Platoon 2: (220)
PCS
Vox-Caster

3x Infantry Squads
1 squad has a vox-caster
Each squad has a heavy bolter

x2 Veterans: (170x2)
Grenadiers
2x Meltaguns
Heavy Flamer
Chimera

Heavy Support: (450)
x2 Leman Russ Exterminator
Heavy Bolter Sponsons
Heavy Stubber

Basilisk
Camo Netting

I think to expand to 1850 I'll add a pair of Vendettas. To run at 1250 I'll drop the heavy bolter platoon and the astropath and turn one of the heavy flamers into a normal flamer or pull off a stubber or something.

If I drop the heavy bolter platoon, an Exterminator, the astropath and one of the psykers, trade the other platoon's lascannons for missile launchers, and then trade the vets' heavy flamers for normal flamers then I'm at 1000 points.

Any thoughts?

Looks like you have done your home work.   I think it is a well balanced list got AT covered hords objectives ect.

My only thought is very little AA or anit flyer but you could just hope something gets it with a snap shot which works too.  I would say play it grasp the feel of it and see what really works and what kinda gets ground out.

Yeah this looks like a solid list, especially since it appears to be battle forged which is a big bonus (or so I hear).

Using the Combined Arms detachment is convenient, for the most part. The Warlord trait reroll is nice, and Objective Secured is so-so (very situational).
