Naming individual Guardsmen
« on: August 3, 2007, 11:03:39 PM »
Well, in a spout of boredom, I've come up with names to several of my little ground pounders here. My question though, is if any of you have done the same in either the same or other situations?

If so, what are they, and have they done anything special? I remember i a model named Jenkins was able to kill a Demon Prince with his bare hands. :P

I'm thinking of painting their names on their bases.

My friend did that with his CSM, naming them Bill, Jeff, and stuff liek that. Then I bought them off of him. Still have their names too. If you do put their names on the bases, put them under the base, u will have more room then

There are far too many to name. Far to many.

That, and after you name the first 20 or so, you start really scratching your head for names. However, when I first started playing Imperial Guard (back in the day!) I used a baby name site to randomly get names for them. Just like this one. Makes the job that little bit easier.

Ah, cause what I do is just name them whenever I feel like it.

I'll get three today, fifteen tommorrow.

Sometimes I'll have a squad wiped to the last man and come up with a cute name for himself.

Like MC Pee Pants. He was survived a three heavy bolter shots, a missle launcher, five bolters, and a battle cannon due to a nifty 3+ cover save I had.

Let's to say his pants weren't dry when the ordeal was over. And I don't mean the snow around him melted.

I only name my important characters like officers. Since they're usually the last ones standing.

Surely getting too attatched to your individual Guardsmen is only going to lead to lots and lots of heartbreak?

All my officers and squad leaders have names, as does my commissar and my pscycher with honorifica.  I can't be bothered to name the other 125 or so models, however.

Oh, and I only give them last names.  French ones. 8)  WHich I paint on the fronts of their bases.

I do have one model that has a nickname - I have a plasma gunner that used to die from overheat in every single game until I got my army over 1500 points.  I called him "Crispy McBurns-a-lot". 8)

Any model who stands out or performs particularly well gets canonised (and gets a name) with a halo made from the voxhoop. Examples would be St. Bitters, the patron saint of epileptic army reservists, a kasrkin plasma gunner who along with Maxer Ferdinand deep striked, blew up a chimera, a sentinel and immobilised another chimera before one overheated and the other was autocannoned to dog food.

I'd name my officers and sergeants too.
I like what you're doing, but none the less... It's pretty freakin' messed up. Which is cool. Great ideas and concepts, but again, pretty freakin' messed up.
Lol.

heheh only officers and veterans get names in my army. And then I use some of my chums surnames to deter them from killing the squad. Its always nice to have a name to put to a squad though, makes it all the more tragic when they inevitably die  :)

Only during the Eye of Terror Campaign. I lost about 500 good men.

Wow, that really sucks for them.

Though, I have a 23% survival rate in my company.

Kind of sucks to be them.

Perhaps you shouldn't, as they broke the melee rules to do so (only the two commanders should have fought, as nothing else was in base contact). 8)

Still, go ahead - if no other reason than to annoy Ailaros. :P

Hey now  ;D

Personally, I don't name anyone who I can't come up with a creative reason why they didn't really die.

In the end, this pretty much means my company commander and his attendant advisor (which, surprisingly, have been killed by something on the order of 3 instant death weapons between the two of them over nearly 30 games).

That, and my platoon lascannoneer, Melos, and I'm pretty much at the end of my naming. Just too time consuming to write the fluff otherwise.

Where as none of my guys have fluff, named or not - just not my forte, I guess...

One reason is my force is more representational of a Bellemonde unit, rather than an actual unit for precisely the reason that Ailaros alluded to - I just don't feel comfortable having the same guy killed repeatedly. 8)  There are only so many times you can have someone vaporized and then bring them back from the dead for the next battle.

Same reason I don't like special characters, actually...

Well special characters could always be "seriously wounded" and make a miraculous comeback during the next game. It doesn't even need to be special character, it could be a commander that you're attached to.

There's a guy at my gaming store who had his Chaplain shot in the head by a plasma pistol and somehow survived. I'm guessing the pistol failed to wound, and the Chaplain just passed out from shock.

Anywho, naming your commanders and sepcial fellows not only help out in fluff, but also let's you feel more attached to your men (i mean, erm, making more careful decisions with them unless absolutely necessary)

Good golly that was ages ago.
