Haven't heard of the Nevernight series either. I honestly haven't been reading much  :-[(blasphemy, I know). But, the new Witcher show, which has exceeded my expectations by a significant margin (they were set around 0), has me wanting to start over and finish The Witcher series.

Also, an Idoneth Deepkin book has finally dropped for Age of Sigmar. Going to be reading that, definitely!

Gideon the Ninth was pure bliss. Snark to snark combat, interesting uses of necromancy, and not everyone is a cis white guy saving the universe.

Oh yeah, finished the second Nevernight book and it's still cracking along. If you've seen the first season of Spartacus you'll pick up the gist quickly enough.

You know how to sell a series without ever talking about what the story is about with this one sentence lol.
If there is anything that recent politics has taught us, it is that quotes taken out of context can mean what ever you want them to.
Well I always liked the globals...

I also started the Witcher books and to tell the truth I was a bit disappointed - their style is much like that of a folk tale. They're not bad , but neither are they the hyped up masterpiece I was expecting.
Aside from that, I'd say, as far as fantasy series go, Elric of Melnibone has been my favourite.

Hi Radec,

Did you by chance only read The Last Wish? That is a collection of short stories meant to build the beginning of the Witcher series.

Once you get to The Blood of Elves, it'll start following that novel format you're expecting.

Hope this helps! But yeah, the series won't appeal to everyone. But if you haven't read the second book yet, I'd think about giving it another chance :).

Yrs, I started with "The last wish" (since it was marked as book number 1 in the series). I'm certainly not leaving the series and it is good to know that they get better!

Anyone else finished The Maleficent Seven by Cameron Johnston? Obviously a homage to The Magnificent Seven except this time the people organising the defence of the village are a demonologist, necromancer, vampire lord, pirate queen, elder Ork, former god avatar, and a *highly* unethical alchemist. Highly amusing and this is an Orc done right. Really enjoyed it.

That one's certainly on my list.

My most recent SF/F read that I liked was Planetside by Michael Mammay. Very solid mystery-based Military Scifi fare, enjoyed it quite a bit. Full disclosure: Mike is a friend of mine. Nevertheless, I do heartily recommend.

I've been reading his books for a while. Nice bloke on Twitter as well. Sounds like he's going a corker of a book coming out soon.

Yeah, it's mil scifi humor. A bit of departure for him, so he's nervous about it. He's already got a pretty loyal following, though, so I think he'll do fine.

I've been reading the Siege of Terra book series, and it's pretty amazing so far.

I've got a preorder on it as he's always done me well.

Marko Kloos' Palladium Wars series is quite fun. Interplanetary war ended a while ago with the aggressors crushed and now occupied. One of the main characters was on the losing side and knows that they did a bad. Now someone is trying to kick it all off again.

Currently reading Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff.

It's essentially Interview with a Vampire, except the Vampire is the interviewer and the "thing" he's interviewing is the Witcher. Fun so far, but a bit on-the-nose and working in broad strokes. The MC just uttered "Where's the beslubbering pub" in a post-apocalyptic hellscape, so I can't reasonably take it TOO seriously.

By that measure, incidentally, we Warhammer fans should LOVE IT.

Ever tried Prosper's Demon by KJ Parker? A world where exorcists and demons keep running into each other over and over again so it's like "oh beslubber off, not you again." It's a quick and snarky read.

Putting it on my list now. A few projects I'm considering a dark fantasy/horror and I need to bone up a bit on the subgenre.
