Title: IainC's Dastardly Diplomatic Devilry - Orders or Final Peace Due October 27th
Post by: IainC on February 13, 2011, 08:10:51 AM
Diplomacy time again!

This time I will run a game that will rise phoenix-like from the embers of Killersquid's long dormant campaign. Players in that game will get preference in places for this game but anyone can sign up.

Basic house rules.  First turn is five days, others will be three days (with a bit of latitude to account for the fact that I probably won't update until later in the day after the deadline). I will give a bit of leeway for late orders, and if you need to drop out of the game for whatever reason, then you are required to find a replacement...Or else.
For Diplomacy stuff.

Rules can be found here (http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/Diplomacy_Rulebook.pdf).

Quick learners guide can be found here (http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/Diplomacy_FiveMinGuide.pdf).

Seven spots available, sign up below and I'll randomly assign starting positions when we have all the players that we are going to get.

Edit: Game is now full, players and nations are as follows:

Killing Time: England
Lockz: Turkey
Azore24: Austria
Seraph Tenacious: Germany
Benis: Russia
JoBob: France
Faitherun: Italy

Since Lockz game is in the final throws I'd like to be in this, if that's ok.

I would also like to join but I can take a reserve spot if someone new or from Killersquid's game comes along and want to play.

I've edited in the names of the colours for each nation in to the list for the geographically challenged. Some of the colours won't show up well on the forum background so I won't change the text colour itself.

Yes, I will update the map later when I have a chance but for now note that the German army in Kiel is actually in Holland. This of course means that Germany has an additional build (which I have already changed).

Edit: Maps updated.

The map looks like this after all of that:

We have one dislodgement to handle before we go to builds, the Austrian fleet in Greece can either retreat to Albania or it may be disbanded. Let me know what you want to do here.

Once that is out of the way the builds will be as follows:

Turkey has one build
Russia has one build

Austria has one disband if the fleet retreats to Albania or no change if they choose to disband the fleet instead.

Austria chose to disband the fleet in Greece and both the Austrian and Russian builds have been submitted so here is the map going into 1903.

This shakes things up considerably.

Two dislodged units to deal with before we go into the Fall turn:

The German fleet in Denmark can retreat to either Helgoland Bight or the Baltic Sea or it can disband

The Russian Fleet in Rumania can retreat to the Black Sea or it can disband.

Please PM me those retreats/disbands as soon as possible and we'll head on into the Fall turn.

Anyway, the retreats are in. The Russians slunk back into the Black Sea while the filthy Boche are cruising the Baltic.

Orders are in - on time even so thank you all for that. Some of you managed to absent-mindedly leave a knife or two stuck in each other's backs. There should be some interesting PMs flying around after this.

Note that the fleet movements between the Irish Sea and the Mid Atlantic Ocean failed because units cannot directly swap places unless there is a convoy involved.

Sorry for the late update but I've been speed-painting Chaos Warriors for a tournament tomorrow. I have no idea how it happens that no matter how many Chaos Warriors I have, I always seem to need to speed-paint a bunch more the day before any given tournament. Surely there must be a quantity of Chaos Warriors that counts as a sufficient number at some point? Ah well, who am I to question the Great Shaper...

Anyhow, orders are in and they are like this:

Austria:
A Budapest Supports A Trieste
A Rumania - Bulgaria
A Serbia Supports A Rumania - Bulgaria
A Trieste Supports A Serbia
A Vienna Supports A Trieste

England:
F Denmark Hold
A Edinburgh - Belgium
A Liverpool Hold
F London Supports F English Channel
F North Sea Convoys A Edinburgh - Belgium

France:
A Brest - Paris
F English Channel Supports A Edinburgh - Belgium
F Irish Sea - Mid-Atlantic Ocean
A Marseilles - Spain
F Western Mediterranean - Tunis

Germany:
F Baltic Sea Supports F Denmark - Sweden (*Void*)
A Belgium Hold (*Dislodged*)
A Gascony - Marseilles
A Kiel Hold
A Tyrolia Hold

Italy:
F Adriatic Sea Convoys A Venice - Albania
F Mid-Atlantic Ocean - Portugal
A Piedmont Supports A Gascony - Marseilles
A Venice - Albania

Russia:
A Armenia - Ankara
F Black Sea Supports A Armenia - Ankara
A Livonia Hold
F Sweden Supports F Denmark
A Syria - Smyrna (*Fails*)

Turkey:
F Aegean Sea - Bulgaria(sc) (*Fails*)
F Ankara - Constantinople (*Disbanded*)
A Bulgaria - Serbia (*Disbanded*)
A Greece Supports A Bulgaria - Serbia
A Smyrna - Constantinople (*Bounce*)

There is one retreat to handle:
The German army in Belgium can retreat to either Holland, Picardy, Ruhr or Burgundy. Alternatively it may be disbanded.

As soon as I get that decision we can go to builds which will look like this:

Austria:   Supp  6 Unit  5 Build  0
England:   Supp  6 Unit  5 Build  1
France:    Supp  4 Unit  5 Remove  1
Germany:   Supp  5 Unit  5 Build  0 (unless they choose to disband the army in Belgium, in which case they will have 1 build)
Italy:     Supp  4 Unit  4 Build  0
Russia:    Supp  6 Unit  5 Build  1
Turkey:    Supp  3 Unit  3 Build  0

In a not hugely surprising turn of events, the Germans have retreated to Holland so the map at the end of 1904 looks like this:

Builds and disbands as follows:

Austria:   Supp  6 Unit  5 Build  0
England:   Supp  6 Unit  5 Build  1
France:    Supp  4 Unit  5 Remove  1
Germany:   Supp  5 Unit  5 Build  0
Italy:     Supp  4 Unit  4 Build  0
Russia:    Supp  6 Unit  5 Build  1
Turkey:    Supp  3 Unit  3 Build  0

Get those to me ASAP and we'll move into 1905.

Builds are in, thanks for being on the ball with that guys.

New English regiment is raised in Edinburgh, a new Russian Fleet sets sail out of Sevastopol and the French fleet in the English Channel decides to go home and have an early bath.

Here's the map:

One retreat to handle, the Austrian army in Bulgaria may either retreat to Romania or it may be disbanded.

In any case, the map is now list and some of you look pretty screwed (and by 'some of you' I mean 'Turkey')

There are two dislodgements to handle and one unit is disbanded. The map looks like this after all of that:

Retreats are in, the English fleet sets sail from Denmark into the open sea at Skagerrak while the Austrian army in Greece surrenders unconditionally.

The map for builds is as follows:

Final builds are therefore:

Austria:   Supp  5 Unit  4 Build  1
England:   Supp  6 Unit  6 Build  0
France:    Supp  7 Unit  4 Build  2
Germany:   Supp  4 Unit  4 Build  0
Italy:     Supp  3 Unit  3 Build  0
Russia:    Supp  8 Unit  6 Build  2
Turkey:    Supp  1 Unit  2 Remove 1

Get those to me ASAP and we can continue with the 1906 turn.

New Russian fleet in St Petersburg, armies in Moscow, Vienna, Paris and Brest. Meanwhile the remains of the Turkish fleet in the Aegean decide that war isn't as much fun as it sounds and go become fishermen instead.

All of which means that we say goodnight to Lockz of Turkey, thanks for playing and I hope you'll be in the next game. There is also plenty of dislodging going on:

The Turkish fleet in Greece can retreat to Albania but as they will be disbanded anyway in the builds phase it's not necessary as it can't affect other retreats.
The German army in Marseilles can retreat to Piedmont or it can disband.
The French army in Munich can retreat to Tyrolia or it can disband
The English fleet in the Norwegian Sea can retreat to Clyde, Edinburgh, North Atlantic or it can disband
The Italian army in Venice can retreat to Piedmont, Apulia, Tuscany or it can disband.

Note that if two or more units are ordered to retreat to the same province, then they are all disbanded instead (p18 of the rules).

Please get those orders to me ASAP and by PM rather than posting them in the thread - it's not so important if there's only one retreat or only a couple of retreats that won't affect anything else on the map, but in this case it's important to be secret. Also note that you are not supposed to discuss your retreats before submitting orders but there's obviously no way I can enforce that so you are on the honour system.

In Diplomacy, there is no surrender! You know what there is though? A nice juicy place in my game just waiting for you to carry it off into the Berlin Sunset.

Builds are all now in and Lockz has taken stock of the dwindling German strategic reserves.

New armies in Vienna and Budapest while all the other nations with builds decide to expand their naval power. Fleets take to the seas in St Petersburg, London and Brest. Meanwhile the German Fleet in the North Sea, the German army in Piedmont and the Italian fleet in the Adriatic are all victims of ever tightening budgetary considerations.

Note that Russia had two available builds but chose to only use one.

Given that KT will be playing with pebbles for the next week and a bit, the deadline for the Spring 1907 turn is therefore Midnight GMT on Thursday 21st April.

As things stand, Russia is leading with 10 centres (just over halfway to a solo victory) while England, France and Austria are all in a dead-heat for second place with 7 centres apiece. I expect that things will get very interesting from here on out and even the weak nations may be able to strike a bargain that gets them back into the game.

Retreats are here. The English slink off to London and the Baltic while the French disband their army in Piedmont and sail their fleet to the shelter of Apulia.

The map for builds then looks like this:

The Italian army in Tuscany will be removed as well.

Time to get on with 1908! Builds are all in, new fleets in St Petersburg, Trieste and Marseille while armies muster in Moscow, Vienna and Berlin. On the other side of the equation, the English fleets in the Baltic and Norwegian seas are quietly retired and the Italian army in Tuscany salutes the flag for the last time.

Now we are five and the real battles are just beginning. Orders for Spring 1908 are due by Midnight GMT on Saturday 30th April.

My bad, I had all the orders - on time even - but forgot to post the update. Much apologies.

Anyhow, here are your orders:

Austria:
F Adriatic Sea - Ionian Sea
A Apulia Supports F Naples
A Bohemia Supports A Tyrolia - Munich
A Budapest - Serbia
A Greece Hold
A Piedmont Hold
A Rome Supports A Apulia
A Tyrolia - Munich
A Venice Supports A Piedmont

England:
F Denmark - Sweden (*Dislodged*)
A Holland Supports A Ruhr
A Liverpool Hold
F London - North Sea (*Fails*)
A Ruhr Hold

France:
A Burgundy - Belgium
F Gulf of Lyon Supports F Western Mediterranean - Tyrrhenian Sea
F Ionian Sea - Aegean Sea
A Marseilles Hold
F Tunis Supports F Western Mediterranean - Tyrrhenian Sea
F Western Mediterranean - Tyrrhenian Sea

Germany:
A Berlin - Kiel (*Fails*)
A Kiel - Denmark (*Fails*)
A Munich Supports A Berlin - Kiel (*Dislodged*)

Russia:
F Edinburgh Supports F Norway - North Sea
A Livonia - Prussia
F Naples Supports F Adriatic Sea - Ionian Sea
F North Sea - English Channel
F Norway - North Sea
A Sevastopol - Armenia
A Silesia Supports A Tyrolia - Munich
F Skagerrak Supports A Sweden - Denmark
A Smyrna Hold
A Sweden - Denmark
F Tyrrhenian Sea - Tunis (*Dislodged*)

Which looks like this:

And means the map now looks like this:

There are three retreats to handle before we can go to builds and they are as follows:

English F Denmark can retreat to Helgoland Bight or Baltic Sea or it may disband.
German A Munich can retreat to Burgundy or it may disband.
Russian F Tyrrhenian Sea can retreat to Tuscany or it may disband.

Get those to me ASAP and we'll head to builds.
Title: Re: IainC's Dastardly Diplomatic Devilry - Fall 1908 orders due 4th May
Post by: IainC on May 7, 2011, 06:44:27 PM
Retreats are done so now we are on to builds. The post retreat map looks like this:

And builds are as follows.

Happy Faces:
Austria:   Supp 10 Unit  9 Build  1
France:    Supp  7 Unit  6 Build  1
Russia:    Supp 12 Unit 11 Build  1

Sad Faces:
Germany:   Supp  2 Unit  3 Remove  1
England:   Supp  3 Unit  5 Remove  2

As you can see, there's a close race at the top with Russia about two-thirds of the way to a solo victory and Austria close behind. France is trailing a little but can still be considered a contender. Germany and England are not in good shape and their survival is on shaky ground. Perhaps a phoenix-like resurrection is waiting or maybe a final blaze of glory before the inevitable night.

Get those builds to me as quick as you can and then we can go on to 1909.

Ok builds are in; new fleets steam out of Brest and Trieste and a new army appears in St Petersburg. On the other side of the coin, the English fleet in the Baltic Sea along with the army in Ruhr and the German garrison in Berlin slink into the night never to be seen again.

The map looks like this:

It's time to party like it's 1909 so get your orders for the spring turn to me no later than Midnight GMT on Wednesday 11th May.

Orders are in so here's the damage.

Austria:
F Albania - Greece
A Apulia - Venice
A Bohemia - Munich (*Bounce*)
A Bulgaria - Constantinople
F Ionian Sea - Eastern Mediterranean
A Rome Supports A Tuscany
A Rumania - Budapest
A Silesia - Galicia
A Tuscany Supports A Rome
A Tyrolia - Vienna

England:
A Holland Supports A Belgium (*Ordered to Move*)
A Liverpool - Edinburgh (*Fails*)
F London Hold (*Dislodged*)

France:
F Aegean Sea Supports A Bulgaria - Constantinople
A Belgium - Burgundy
F Brest Supports F Western Mediterranean - Mid-Atlantic Ocean (*Cut*)
A Gascony Supports A Belgium - Burgundy
F Gulf of Lyon - Western Mediterranean
F Naples Hold
F Western Mediterranean - Mid-Atlantic Ocean

Germany:
A Kiel - Munich (*Bounce*)
A Paris - Brest (*Fails*)

Russia:
A Armenia - Sevastopol
A Denmark Hold
F Edinburgh Hold
F English Channel - London
A Galicia - Rumania
F North Sea Supports F English Channel - London
A Norway - St Petersburg
A Prussia - Warsaw
F Skagerrak Hold
A Smyrna - Constantinople (*Fails*)

Which results in:

We have one retreat, from England:
Fleet in  London can retreat to Yorkshire or Wales or it can disband.

Please get that retreat to me as soon as you can and we can then head to the builds.

Regardless of the English retreat, builds will look like this:

Austria:   Supp 10 Unit 10 Build  0
England:   Supp  2 Unit  3 Remove  1 (assuming the fleet retreats, if it disbands then there are no English adjustments to make).
France:    Supp  7 Unit  7 Build  0
Germany:   Supp  3 Unit  2 Build  1
Russia:    Supp 12 Unit 10 Build  1

Still a very close race between Austria and Russia with France still very much in contention. Germany is clawing back some ground but is a long way behind the rest and England is in very poor shape.
Title: Re: IainC's Dastardly Diplomatic Devilry - Fall 1909 retreats due
Post by: IainC on May 16, 2011, 07:11:57 AM
The London fleet negotiates an honourable surrender and spends Christmas learning to like Tchaikovsky.

Builds are confirmed then as follows:

Austria:   Supp 10 Unit 10 Build  0
England:   Supp  2 Unit  2 Build  0
France:    Supp  7 Unit  7 Build  0
Germany:   Supp  3 Unit  2 Build  1
Russia:    Supp 12 Unit 10 Build  1

Amazingly while I was writing this update both builds were submitted so here is the map going into 1910. New armies appear in Moscow and Berlin.

Next up is the spring 1910 turn then, orders for which are due by Midnight GMT on Thursday 19th May.

Orders are all in and on time even!

Here then are the results of all your intrigue. England submitted orders incidentally, they clearly decided to see if staying absolutely still might help:

Austria:
A Bohemia - Silesia
A Budapest - Serbia
A Constantinople - Ankara
F Eastern Mediterranean Supports F Aegean Sea - Smyrna
A Galicia Supports A Bohemia - Silesia
F Greece - Bulgaria(sc) (*Bounce*)
A Rome Hold

France:

F Brest Supports F Mid-Atlantic Ocean - English Channel (*Cut*)
A Burgundy Supports A Gascony - Paris
A Gascony - Paris
F Mid-Atlantic Ocean - English Channel (*Bounce*)

Germany:

A Rumania - Bulgaria (*Bounce*)
A Sevastopol Supports A Moscow - Ukraine
F Skagerrak - Denmark
A Smyrna - Constantinople
A St Petersburg - Moscow
A Warsaw - Silesia (*Fails*)

That results in one single retreat, the German army in Paris for which I already have a retreat order, it diverts to Picardy and we can move straight into the Fall turn.

Amazingly there are no retreats so the map at the end of the year looks like this:

Retreats are done. The Russians scuttle to Ankara while both English units hoist down the flag for the last time and, with nary a tremble of their stiff upper-lips, march off into the sunset. Thanks for playing Dizz and for being a sport even after it was obvious that you were doomed.

Now we are four and the game is very close indeed. Russia has a very slight lead over France and Austria but Germany is resurgent and could still spoil the plans of much mightier nations.

If there is more than one retreat you should PM it to me as they are supposed to be secret. In this case it doesn't matter much but in some cases there may be multiple retreats that could all potentially trip over each other or may otherwise influence someone else's retreat decision.
Title: Re: IainC's Dastardly Diplomatic Devilry - Fall 1911 Retreats Due
Post by: IainC on June 3, 2011, 11:48:31 AM
Retreats are sorted in an impressively quick manner so here is the map. No big surprises, everyone takes the only retreat option open to them.

Here's the map:

And here are the builds:

Austria:   Supp 11 Unit  8 Build  3
France:    Supp  8 Unit  8 Build  0
Germany:   Supp  5 Unit  4 Build  1
Russia:    Supp 10 Unit 10 Build  0

The last English bastion submits to the Tzarist oppressors as expected. Austria leapfrogs Russia as the leader of the (not very) Free World, France keeps the status quo and Germany continues to flourish at the expense of the English possessions in the Low Countries.

We get three retreats from all of that:

French F Liverpool can retreat to Irish Sea or Clyde or it may disband.
French F London can retreat to Wales or it may disband.
Russian A Sevastopol can retreat to Moscow or it may disband.

Once we have those retreats in we can go to builds.

Edit: Russia and France are the only countries with adjustments this year so when you send me your retreat orders, you may as well give your build orders too - France will get one build and Russia gets to disband one unit assuming all retreats move rather than disband.

Alrighty, the French fleets hang on grimly to their British footholds by skirting around the coast to Wales and Clyde while the Russian army in Sevastopol heads back to Moscow.

In the winter, the Russian army in Armenia heads off into the Arabian Peninsula never to be seen again while France unveils a shiny new Fleet in Brest.

Here's the map after all builds and retreats:

For those of you keeping score at home the current status is as follows:

Austria keeps its status as Top Nation with 11 centres. France steals a centre from Austria who gains one at Russia's expense leaving both France and Russia at parity with 9 centres each and Germany remains the tail end charlie with 5 centres.

This means that the orders for Spring 1913 are due by Midnight GMT on Wednesday 15th June

We have retreats now. The units with only one option took it, the fleet in Smyrna disbanded and the army in Burgundy headed back to Marseilles.

Here's the map:

Thanks for all getting your orders in without too much nagging. There's quite a lot happening this turn, some crossed wires or changed plans and no-one gets what they expected.

Austria:
F Albania - Adriatic Sea
A Ankara - Armenia
F Black Sea Supports A Sevastopol
A Bohemia Supports A Budapest - Galicia
A Budapest - Galicia
A Galicia - Ukraine
A Rumania Supports A Galicia - Ukraine
A Sevastopol Supports A Galicia - Ukraine
A Silesia - Warsaw (*Fails*)
F Smyrna Hold
A Tyrolia Supports A Bohemia

France:
F Clyde Supports F Irish Sea - Liverpool
F English Channel - North Sea (*Fails*)
F Irish Sea - Liverpool (*Fails*)
A Marseilles - Burgundy
F North Atlantic Ocean - Norwegian Sea (*Fails*)
A Paris Supports A Marseilles - Burgundy
F Picardy - Belgium (*Bounce*)
F Rome - Tuscany

Germany:
A Belgium - Picardy (*Fails*)
A Berlin Supports A Munich
A Burgundy Supports A Belgium - Picardy (*Dislodged*)
A Munich Supports A Prussia - Silesia (*Void*)
A Ruhr - Belgium (*Bounce*)

Russia:
F Liverpool Hold
A Moscow - Livonia
F North Sea - London (*Bounce*)
F Norwegian Sea - North Atlantic Ocean (*Fails*)
A Prussia Supports A Warsaw
A Ukraine - Moscow
F Wales - London (*Bounce*)
A Warsaw Supports A Ukraine - Moscow (*Cut*)
A Yorkshire Supports F Liverpool

One retreat after all of that:
German A Burgundy can retreat to Gascony or it may disband.

Once that is sorted out it's a relatively quiet build phase:

Austria:   Supp 12 Unit 11 Build  1
France:    Supp  8 Unit  8 Build  0
Germany:   Supp  5 Unit  5 Build  0 (unless they disband the army in Burgundy in which case they will have one build)
Russia:    Supp  9 Unit  9 Build  0

So Austria pulls out more of a lead at the top, inching ever closer to a solo win, France slips back slightly while Russia and Germany remain as they were last year.

What witchcraft is this? Orders in early? Without reminders! Never has my gast been so thoroughly flabbered!

Here are these highly suspicious 'orders':

Austria:

F Black Sea - Constantinople
A Bohemia Supports A Munich
A Bulgaria - Rumania
A Galicia - Warsaw (*Fails*)
F Ionian Sea - Tyrrhenian Sea (*Fails*)

A Gascony - Spain
F Mid-Atlantic Ocean - Western Mediterranean
F North Atlantic Ocean Hold (*Dislodged*)
A Paris - Gascony
F Picardy Hold
F Tyrrhenian Sea - Ionian Sea (*Bounce*)

Germany:
A Burgundy Supports A Kiel - Munich
A Kiel - Munich (*Fails*)
A Marseilles - Piedmont
A Ruhr Supports A Kiel - Munich

Russia:

Only one retreat after all of that:

French fleet in the North Atlantic can retreat to the Norwegian Sea, the Irish Sea or it may disband.

Once that is out of the way and we go to builds, they will be as follows:

Austria:   Supp 14 Unit 12 Build  2
France:    Supp  9 Unit  8 Build  1 (assuming the fleet retreats, 2 builds if it disbands)
Germany:   Supp  4 Unit  5 Remove 1
Russia:    Supp  7 Unit  9 Remove  2

Austria pulls out more of a lead and comes to within four centres of a solo win, France reclaims some territory from Germany and Russia's star wanes further.

The French fleet opts to disband rather than retreat so we are now at builds.

Here's the map:

Most of you have already submitted your adjustments for the year so if you want to change your mind after the French orders then let me know ASAP as I'll update again as soon as I get the last set of builds.

Here are the adjustments:
Austria:   Supp 14 Unit 12 Build  2
France:    Supp  9 Unit  7 Build  2
Germany:   Supp  4 Unit  5 Remove  1
Russia:    Supp  7 Unit  9 Remove 2
Title: Re: IainC's Dastardly Diplomatic Devilry - Fall 1914 Builds Due
Post by: IainC on July 1, 2011, 05:16:24 AM
Adjustments are in:

Fleets disappear from the North Atlantic and Liverpool while the army in Burgundy is likewise MIA. Meanwhile new fleets arise in Marseille and Trieste along with an army in Vienna. The French choose not to use their second build this year.

The map going into 1915 is therefore like this:

The deadline for Spring 1915 orders is Midnight GMT on Monday 4th July.

Incredibly for such a fierce turn, there are no retreats although the Austrian army in Moscow is disbanded as it has nowhere to retreat to. So, we go straight to builds which are as follows:

Austria:   Supp 14 Unit 13 Build  1
France:    Supp  8 Unit  8 Build  0
Germany:   Supp  5 Unit  4 Build  1

All the manoeuvring in the Spring led to some interesting fallout at the end of the year.

The orders looked like this:

Austria:
F Adriatic Sea Supports A Trieste - Venice

A Galicia - Warsaw (*Fails*)
F Greece Supports F Eastern Mediterranean - Ionian Sea

A Tuscany - Venice (*Bounce*)

Russia:
A Livonia Supports A Moscow
A Moscow Supports A Prussia - Warsaw

and the map like this:

Resulting in:

There is one retreat to handle before the builds - the French army in Rome can retreat to Apulia or it can disband. Let me know what you want to do with that JoBob, remember that you'll need to disband a unit before the end of the year anyhow.

Once that has been resolved we'll be able to go to builds and assuming that the French army retreats, they will look like this:

Austria:   Supp 14 Unit 13 Build  1
France:    Supp  7 Unit  8 Remove 1 (no adjustment if the Roman army disbands in the retreat phase)
Germany:   Supp  5 Unit  5 Build  0
Russia:    Supp  8 Unit  7 Build  0

Post by: IainC on July 17, 2011, 05:47:52 PM
In a spectacular display of efficiency, I not only have the retreat order but also the adjustments from both France and Austria.

The army in Rome retreats to Apulia shortly before a new army rises in Budapest and the French fleet in North Africa sails away over the sand dunes and into history.

Here's the map after all of that:

Orders for the Spring 1917 turn therefore are due by Midnight GMT on Wednesday 20th July.

As spotted by the eagle-eyed Lockz, there is a mistake in the above orders but it doesn't affect the map. Austria didn't order it's Tyrolean army to support a Russian attack on Warsaw from Moscow but instead to support the move from Trieste into Venice. As this move was successful and as the support for the Russian move was invalid nothing changes as a result. Apologies for the confusion.

Orders are in and so we can update. Benis wisely refused an invitation by that nice Mr Lenin to go on holiday to the Urals and as such is still (nominally) in command of Russia although confused reports from within the Imperial palace claim that the real power behind the throne is a monkey called Ratstattin or something like that.

Austria:
F Adriatic Sea Supports A Venice
F Apulia - Naples (*Fails*)
A Bohemia Hold

F Ionian Sea Hold
F Naples - Rome (*Disbanded*)

France:

F Western Mediterranean Hold

Germany:

Russia:

France:    Supp  8 Unit  7 Build  1

Germany:   Supp  5 Unit  5 Build  0

Russia would normally get a build but has no empty home supply centres to build in.

Please get those build orders to me as soon as you can.

Really nothing I could have done, seeing as I didn't even know until the day before. But I apologize, and seeing as there are no vacations in the near future it won't happen again. No harm done anyways.

I'll still be available for questions via PM or email in the meantime but I'll only have a work laptop that won't have Realpolitik or an FTP client on it.

No retreats this turn either as the only unit that needed to retreat had nowhere to retreat to. Therefore we'll go direct to builds:

Austria:   Supp 11 Unit  9 Build  1
France:    Supp  9 Unit  8 Build  1

Germany:   Supp  6 Unit  6 Build  0
Russia:    Supp  8 Unit  7 Build  0

Austria's once unassailable lead is being slowly chipped away by a resurgent France. Where will it all end?

Get builds to me ASAP please.

I'll definitely get my builds in, but I make no promises about orders.  I most likely should be able to, but if something happens with the hurricane blowing in, I'm just giving you warning.

Builds are in - new fleets steam out of Trieste and Marseille so here's a map:

Given the somewhat precarious position of Azore, I'm going to set the usual 3 day deadline for orders but I'll extend this as required if things start to look grim over on the US east coast.

For now though orders for the Spring 1921 turn are due by Midnight GMT on Tuesday 30th August.

Russia:
A Galicia Supports A Warsaw
A Livonia Supports A Moscow

Here's a map of the orders:

And here's what it looks like afterwards:

We have one retreat to handle:
French F London can retreat to Yorkshire or it may disband. If Jobob can tell me what that fleet is going to do, we can get on with builds.

Note that if the French fleet retreats, France will have to disband a unit at the end of the year anyway.

Alrighty, the French fleet retreats resulting in this map:

This means the scores and builds at the end of the year are as follows:
Austria:   Supp 11 Unit 10 Build  0
France:    Supp  8 Unit  9 Remove  1
Germany:   Supp  6 Unit  6 Build  0
Russia:    Supp  9 Unit  7 Build  1

It's unlikely but possible that the French disband may affect Russian plans so if both of you could confirm your plans via PM that would be grand.

Orders are in, new partnerships seem to have been forged from the ashes of dead alliances.

Here are the orders:

Austria:
F Adriatic Sea Supports A Trieste - Venice
F Apulia - Ionian Sea
A Bohemia - Vienna
A Galicia Hold
F Ionian Sea - Tyrrhenian Sea
F Naples Supports F Ionian Sea - Tyrrhenian Sea
A Sevastopol Supports A Ukraine
A Trieste - Venice
A Tyrolia Supports A Trieste - Venice
A Ukraine Supports A Galicia

France:
F English Channel Supports F Portugal - Mid-Atlantic Ocean (*Dislodged*)
F Marseilles - Spain(sc)
F Portugal - Mid-Atlantic Ocean (*Fails*)
A Rome Hold
F Tunis - Western Mediterranean

Germany:
A Belgium - Ruhr
F Brest - Mid-Atlantic Ocean
A Burgundy Supports A Munich
A Gascony - Marseilles
F Holland - Belgium
A Munich Hold
A Paris - Brest
A Venice - Piedmont

Russia:
A Livonia Supports A Warsaw
F London - English Channel
A Moscow Supports A Warsaw
F North Atlantic Ocean Supports F Brest - Mid-Atlantic Ocean
F North Sea Supports F London - English Channel
A Norway Hold
A Prussia - Silesia
A St Petersburg Supports A Moscow
A Warsaw Supports A Prussia - Silesia

And a map:

Here's the result:

There's one retreat to handle prior to builds:

French F English Channel can retreat to the Irish Sea, Wales, Picardy or it may disband. Note that France will need to disband a unit by the end of the year.

Get that retreat/disband to me and then we'll go to builds. I'll list them here along with the state of the game ahead of time:

Austria:   Supp 13 Unit 10 Build  2
France:    Supp  4 Unit  5 Remove  1
(assuming that the dislodged fleet retreats, if it is disbanded instead then there is no adjustment required)
Germany:   Supp  8 Unit  8 Build  0
Russia:    Supp  9 Unit  9 Build  0

Austria is once again resurgent while France falls further and further behind. The big surprise though is Germany, after many years of languishing far behind the other powers and now the Germans are only a single supply centre behind Russia.

The French fleet in the English Channel disbands and Austria builds two new armies in Trieste and Vienna. I can't help feeling that is going to spell bad news for someone, I guess we'll find out who soon enough.

Here's the map going into 1924:

There's one retreat to handle:
French A Rome can retreat to Tuscany or Apulia or it may disband.

Please decide what you want to do with that Jobob and we'll rattle on to the Fall turn.

Your map has too many Austrian fleets.  There is nothing in Ion or Apu.  (Though I don't mind the free forces...)

Well spotted, thanks. I hadn't updated the client at work for a while and it was about 8 turns behind so I edited it to match the last map in the thread instead of uploading all the orders missed since 1921.

The map has been amended and should now be correct.

This has affected me as IainC pointed out with an illegal move - that army I have in Ruhr is a ghost army.

Adjustments are in. New armies rise in Berlin and Budapest and a new fleet is launched in Trieste. Meanwhile the army in Tunisia and the fleet in the Western Mediterranean are the latest victims of French defence cuts.

Here's the map going into 1925:

I'm going to go ahead and propose that the game be called a draw.  Unless Azore really thinks he can pull off a win (I doubt it), I think we've done all we can here.

Very glad BTW to see this game going into 1925!
Title: Re: IainC's Dastardly Diplomatic Devilry - Fall 1925 Orders Due 23rd October

I'd suggest playing out the end of the year and seeing how things fall then. I doubt that Azore will pull out a solo win this turn or that anything dramatic will happen but it seems better to halt at the year end than in the middle. If everyone involved agrees that it's a draw then that's fine.

As things stand:
Austria needs 3 more SCs for a solo win with 15 SCs
Russia is second with 9
Germany is close behind in third with 8
France is on the ropes with 2 and no way to build new units without recapturing at least one home SC.

If everyone wants to end the game then I'd suggest that Austria be declared the winner but that the points be shared between Austria, Russia and Germany.

A Trieste.

If Germany is content with France staying as it is with Spain and Portugal (if he intends on simply holding in support) then I offer a four-way draw with scoring to be done as per the League rules with myself as the outright leader and ensuring that France gets his points for the game.

I enjoyed your support at the end of the game for France.  Seeing as you wouldn't let me claim the rest of France's provinces, I'm sure not going to let you do it.  I am surprised though that you didn't go for the 3-way win.  It wouldn't have been that hard for you.

I agree, it was a good game played by all, and it shifted around a couple times.  And an additional thank you for when I took over as Germany, for not pounding me into the ground right away, those were some uncertain times.

Yeah, I didn't really consider that Germany would return to its former glory and beyond. Just goes to show that just because things looks like crap it doesn't mean it has to end like crap. I was a bit surprised that our alliance managed to hold given how I stabbed you as Turkey, I was sure that was something that would come back and bite me during the Russian-German alliance, nice of you to not be petty about it.

Oh, and a special thanks to IainC who managed to keep it going like clockwork, great job as game master!

It would have been tempting, although seeing as Azore had also taken advantage of the stab, tough to take it out on the two of you.  Especially when I was just wanting to survive those first few years and various people were nice enough to support me as a buffer between them and their enemies.  Although, you never left yourself open for a good stab (unlike JoBob).

And thank you to IainC for running this long game!

Cool, so all are agreed then that the game is over. It was a marathon game with plenty of action even if things got a bit stale towards the end.

7 months of Diplomacy is certainly an achievement, special mention goes to Lockz for taking over Germany after Seraph Tenacious threw the towel in. After a hugely shaky start he clawed his way back to a very respectable position.

We (briefly) said goodbye to Lockz after the Fall 1906 turn. His short-lived adventure as Caliph was cruelly cut short by the combined forces of Austria and Russia only to re-emerge after the new year with a suspicious haircut and a new-found love of sausage as Reichsfuhrer of Germany.

Faitherun of Italy held out till the end of 1907 before the last Italian saluted La Tricolore for the last time and Dizz/Killing Time was knocked out in the spring of 1911. From then, and for the next fifteen years it was a four way struggle.

Well played all and take a well-deserved rest from forum-based intrigue!

Congratulations Azore.

I've been following this game with interest since my untimely demise.
You were a worthy winner and perhaps unlucky not to get the solo win. I think once you got tripple teamed to curb your expansion it was always going to be an uphill struggle, so you did well to come out on top regardless.
