Title: Porn Spammers in PM
Post by: Kindred on December 21, 2006, 08:55:54 AM
Everyone:

We apologize for the idiot porn spammer in your PM box.
Admins do not (and can not) read PMs sent/received by users, unlessthose PMs are reported or forwared, so unlike posts, there is very little we can do (ahead of time) about someone who sends CRAP in a PM.

We have added CAPTCHA to avoid bots registering on the site...
If an actual human logs into the site and sends this sort of thing, they are banned as soon as we are aware of it.

To try and avoid this sort of thing in the future, we have added a new user group: "Newest".
Users will be in this user group until they make 3 posts in a board that counts posts (i.e. not the tavern or tavern games). Users in this group will not be able to send PMs at all.

I am sorry for anyone in this group of users who feels that this is wrong...   blame the spammers.

That "newest user" feat wouldnt have stopped that particular spammer, I think you are referring to, since he spammed over 20 posts before he was (hopefully) banned. Perhaps it would be worth a thought to allow all moderators in such situations to ban members outright (i think only globals/admins can that right now?). Of course they would have to justify ít afterwards, but then i dont think that any moderator here bans randomly members. Just a thought.

There is very little that we can do against actual human spammers who actively work to get around the restrictions...

All of these restrictions are set in place to avoid the spam-bots and the auto-spammers who attempt to hit a forum once using scripts.

How bout raise the "Newest" function higher? say 10-15? shouldnt be to much of a big deal, as stated before it would be easy for spammers to get around 3 posts.

What difference would the 10-15 limit make if someone wants to do that they want to do? As said before, one of the more recent culprits spammed up more than a score of posts before starting the porn storm. The 0 to 3 post limit stops the majority. The minority will continue onwards no matter what restrictions are put in to place.

We could always disallow PM's for those under 1,000 posts to be safe?  ;)

Says the man over 1000 posts. Ok maybe 50 posts then?  in all fairness though i do beleive the 3-5 thing will work wonders.

i say it should be 10-25 maybe and it has to be with something about 40k or fansity because bots can make random junk in other forms and posts then spam

3 should be fine. If someone new needs to PM for any reason, or say someone who hangs around in the trading forum as there is a case of, they need to PM. Making them post 50 times to be able to use the function is not a great idea.

"The many suffer for the few"

The many with fewer than 3 posts?  ;) Not a whole lot of suffering going on.

I'll be honest.  It's a pretty rare occurrence that someone with less than four posts feels an urgency to send a PM that couldn't wait til a couple more threads have been responded too.

All I'm saying is that, because some "mean person" decided to send some people his favorite porno pics, a small percantage of people can't send PMs and that Kindred (or who ever) had to take time out of their day to add the "newest" rank.

EDIT: Neede to get rid of a rude word before anyone saw it ;)

The percentage of people that can't send emails isn't even worth considering. Yes, it may be a pain in the ass for a few people - but they can go and post a few times.

This will stop ye basic Spam bots from sending everyone man porn. Or goat porn. Or whatever porn it decides to send. That tradeoff seems fair to me!

actually, we have close to 15,000 members in the "newest: category...

mostly people who have logged in once....
well over 10,000 of them have not been online since 2003 or before...

DO they take up site memory and slow it down? Because I think you should just delete those accounts. If they want to come back on, they can spend a copuple minutes registering.

The Staff have talked about this quite a few times.

It wouldn't speed up anything, and it would take up a lot of time, not to mention the fact that a people sign in, leave for yoinks and then come back and start posting.

However, it does also mean a lot of names are used up...

Either way, its not really a big issue right now, and in theory, it should never be.

Oh well, at least it's not as bad as having to look at the _______ (insert word here) favorite pics. If he sent some good pics I wouldn't mind, but then again.............. ...

Well if you want you could PM a global/admin and see if they could free up that name for you. That's what I did when Yoda was taken... Though they may not appreciate thousands of requests. :P

Nope, you should PM Goyder rather than guess. Or you PM me. But why waste the opportunity to fill Goyders mail box with crap?

I never post anything, I just read what other people post  ;D Was just wondering, if you decide to remove the static "non-posters" would people like me be removed aswell?

Cheers!

Hmm I havent noticed a thing about the spam till now. Yet I think you can bumb it up to at least 100 posts. People who are out there to spam around won't hit the 100 posts before being not noticed by the staff and banned.

Aside of that, why would you need to PM if you have around 59 posts orso? Once you posted around 200-300 posts you notice that you might like some people because their attitude towards you, or they are always helpfull. I regulary PM Ollieb with problems, as I have seen him posting over 2 years on LO and 40ko. I dont think that spammers would give a darn about others on this board, and thus they won't take the effort to make more then 100 posts in order to spam others with PM's including weird photo's or the like.

Besides, 100 posts aint that much. 40ko is addictive, once you participate in several topics [serious topics about your army and the like] you quickly start hitting the 25/50/75 with ease. I used to post around 8 posts a day. Heck I think I post even more the 8 nowadays when I have the time.

I'm sorry, but 100 posts is way too much. What happens if someone starts sending abusuive PMs to the member, or wants to contact someone. Think about it. If you had 78 posts and I said 'look man don't duble post' and you couldn't ask what I meant it might get you a bit annoyed. BEsides it took me 6 months to get 100 posts, but then again I didn't spam. If you were determined enough you'd do it anyway.

Traders need PM to control their deals and contacts. Requiring 100 posts puts a serious burden on those who wish to exclusively trade.

This is REALLY not a big deal people.  It's been done, I've yet to hear any real complaints.  there have been no more mass spam PMs.  I think we're in the clear.

Heres an example of why (because it's me). I registered, made three posts (one DE army list and a responce or two) then didn't do anything with my account for years until I logged back on specificly send a PM to a guy I know IRL who wanted a copy of my army list for a battle report he was writing. Then I crusied by the rules forum and laid the smach down on a moderator and stayed forever - but thats another story. So you're wrong.

Point is that if they're a real person they should get to use the PMs, a bot should not which is all the difference that is needed. If a real person starts being stupid undoubtly they'll be reported and banned; thats why we have 'report post' buttons.

Edit: I didn't get any porn either, I feel somewhat sortchanged. At least it may have spiced up my day...

It was Asian porn and it was very photo shopped pictures of Goyder too. I kid but it was horrible. To remind you all it came via PM and the guys posted on almost every forum with his gay tyranny. Yeah it WAS mad gay.

This sounds good but it didn't prevent the guy who attacked this last time. This is more like general maintenance.

Isn't there a rule where you need 50 posts to trade?

And yes, that picture was horrid. Those who never saw dick nor hair of it were lucky.
