Why does everybody paint pink gums and tongues on green blooded Orks?

Contrast. So the model looks more detailed and appealing to the eye. Otherwise they'd kind of look like army men without the charm.

Have seen one bloke do the three shades of green and it looks amazing when done right. They actually look like fighting fungi.

You may be surprised yet not everyone wants them to be maniac mushrooms. A small but dedicated resistance remembers when they weren't. ;)

When weren't they? The Lord of the Rings had them as fungi in 1949.

Way back in the dawn of time GW didn't bother to explain Orks. They were Orcs In Space. Then there were questions of where were the female Orks (other than Bloodbowl cheerleaders but we'll pretend they're drag Orks) and Ork children. Space Marines slaughtering Ork dependents would have been a bad optic even in a universe of exploding guardsmen and endless Elf torture. Thus we were given the fungus hybrid story which itself has slowly mutated as edition become edition.

The diagrams of the birth/sprouting of the Orks in the 2nd ed Codex was the exact process Tolkien described in his novel, and was shown later in the movie.

Have always thought an almost black, green would look mean as.
Oh well. Looks like I'll have to experiment on my own Ork, if and when I get one, to see how it goes.

My 2nd Ed is lost somewhere in the Dreaded Storage Rooms (yes, we have more than one) and Rogue Trader didn't say anything at all about it (being that it was *very* background light, as it were) so I'd say I'm seeing the Ork background through Nostalgia Googles. My bad. :)

LotR did describe their Orks as fungi, aaand GW didn't give THEIR Orks a background till 2nd ed. So we were both right, mate. So put your Nostalgia goggles back on and keep on gaming.

There was an "article" in one of the rule books (I think it was 4th ed) that described why orks have red blood even though they are plant based aliens. So, red blood means red lips, and red tongue, as well as other organs of the body.

If you don't want to paint their lips and tongues red, at least paint your trukks, buggies, coptas, bikes, battle wagons, and planes red. ;D

And I forgot; looted wagons. Maybe with the new rules they will come back so we can again do what orks love to do.... loot stuff left on the battlefield.
