The Ukraine-Why not Azerbaijan?
« on: May 11, 2006, 04:55:15 PM »
As most of you would have noticed the string of revolutions in eastern european countries, very publicised by Bush and the American government.

The attempts by the public of Azerbaijan to have democratic elections are being responded to with extreme violence of the national security forces.
Protesters are prevented from reaching protests by roadblocks, protesters that manage to join (peaceful) protests are savagly beaten by the police, including women and the elderly, and when the elections roll around, the candidates for the opposition parties are arrested and ballots seized when they go against the government.

This is ordered by the government, the government that is supported by the Bush administration.

AND GUESS WHAT...

the Azerbaijani government just happens to have control of a beslubber of a lot of oil.

Welcome to he hypocracy that is Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Another good example is Uzbekistan, which is supported by the British and the USA. The British even fired their diplomat to Uzbekistan when he dared to speak out about the widespread use of torture in Uzbekistan and question whether or not Britain should support such a regime!

But anyway, most of the so-called 'Colour Revolutions' are more showmanship than substance. People put their faith in something new (pro-Western) and instead end up with a leader just as bad who snuggles up to the USA dn Western Europe as opposed to Russia (still the dominant power in Eastern Europe, somthing that is often ignored. Geopolitically Russia is still very powerful in that region) and there is often a backlash against the new leader when this becomes obvious, as has been the case in Georgia and the Ukraine.

It's actually fairly tragic really.
