Military rations
« on: September 24, 2019, 10:20:01 PM »
Something different. This guy Steve1989MREInfo - YouTube eats and reviews international military meals. The good old Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) from all over the globe. Some new, some old, and some way out there. The old ones are more to categorise them as there's nothing edible left in them. Some of the MREs are 12 hour training packs, others 24 patrol packs. You get to see different nation priorities and how they're much more palatable now days than before. Well, once off. Eating the same thing day after day would still drag on you.

I've been watching this guy a long time, he is one of my favorite youtubers. It's really interesting to see how different nations handle their rations, and he has a lot of courage to eat some of them. He even goes for a few infamous ones, like the vomelet. Very nice.

I'll look for that one. He's so enthusiastic over things I'm thinking oh hell no. Yet for the ones in spec he does eat every damn thing. Admirable.

Edit: Oh, the vomelet. Yeah. Not good there.

What's amazing is how much he just keeps eating it, describing how awful it is, then eating more of it!

That's what amazes me. Dedication to brand. So many food varieties. So many different styles.

Edit: The 1987 MRE Pork Patty Ration Pack does wonders where he eats spoilt cheese spread and it's RUN AWAY to throw up time. The pork patty was still decent though.

I fear that watching these will give me flashbacks to eating add-water Royal Thai (whatever the HELL that is) and nearly buckling over from terrible acid reflux for the next two days in the field.

Or when you crap bricks so dense you fear that you'll rip down there after more than a few days on that diet.

By now Steve has eaten so many artificial preservatives that he has stopped aging about 15 years ago.

Watch the newer rations. Things have seemingly changed as to the utility, taste, and variety.

This kind of ration must be for people who are stationed for a long time with decent accommodations and logistical support. I can't imagine setting up a bivouac in the mountains and dragging out all those metal tins. However, it did definitely look edible. The duck sausage with beans in particular was something I'm kinda interested in.

Haha, also getting some flashbacks from all of those random tiny packets of cocoa, tea, soup, energy bars, etc. We used to split up the ration packets and put all of that stuff in their own little bag in the rucksack, and also steal those tiny packets of salt and pepper from the mess hall. A bit of spice does wonders after several days on the same stuff. And a bit of ice tea powder in the canteen makes it less depressing too, though too much of it and you'll start thirsting, which isn't ideal.

The chocolate pudding was a nice touch too. Definitely never had anything like that - though we had a pretty delicious dark chocolate bar.

The heating elements have certainly improved, that Youtube channel never uses the supplied elements which is a shame. I mean, amphetamine parrot, he uses a plastic tray and pot warmers. My first link, I feel, is a better cross reference for field work.

I'm more fond of the retort pouches and flameless ration heaters. Bought some for the Vegas house in case of power outages (AMERICA) also due to SCIENCE. They last and you get a decent hot meal in case of embuggerment.

Flameless heaters... that sounds really interesting, never come across that myself.

FRHs only work for certain foods and types of packaging. Definitely a bonus though compared to finding a calm spot for a stove.

Wow. That's VERY cool. I've never seen those before.

We did have some heating pads for feed and hands that you could buy in the on-site kiosk (not army issued), but I never actually used them because I always thought that a worse day would come whenever I was in the field. :P That's different though, of course.

Wow, this brings back memories! It hasn't changed too much since 2010, though the reindeer stew didn't exist back then (or at least we never had one). I'm surprised to hear the reindeer meat reconstituted perfectly, the meat we got usually tasted quite cardboardy.

As for where he got it - I believe hunting & wildlife supply stores in Norway sell the freeze-dried meals commercially, but I could be wrong.
