Will gw eventually phase out regular marines?
« on: May 16, 2017, 11:09:02 AM »
So I was not at all expecting gw to release bigger space marines. It really seems that they are going for "true scale" space marines which people have been converting for years but I honestly never thought I would see gw do especially since I have not even finished putting all of old marines on the large bases.

It is a great idea to get way more money from people since I feel after people buy one squad they will want to redo their entire armies as primaris since they are so cool. But I wanted to see what everyone's initial opinion is.

Especially since they will be releasing bigger rhinos and land raiders for the primaris marines to use so it seems over time they will continue to beef up all the space marine units.

It really depends on the increase in points though.  How much more is an additional wound and a slightly better bolter going to cost?  If it is any more than 5pts, I don't really see them being brought all that regularly because the points aren't really justified.

That is true however I still see many people getting drawn into the hype and starting to rebuild their armies from the bottom up. I just imagine that over time the old marines will be phased out.

I can see people using the models to represent a standing army of regular marines if they are done well enough and the price is right.

But then again I have seen a build an 1850 marine list with true scale marines that were based off of Terminator models.

Wow that is intense, I usually see a squad or two done online by someone who can really convert them well but a whole army would be intense. I will probably get a box to convert to chaos lol

I think what GW will do is center all future marine releases around the new type, while the older type will be (eventually) pushed back to online only (saving shelf space for the and then phased out several years down the line.  But the dataslates for the old type will always remain, and you'll be free to use them in your games without restriction.  Basically they'll end up like most pre-Sigmar fantasy armies...they'll still be in the game but only in the background.  I know some won't like this but it's inevitable.  :-\

The kicker was that you couldn't tell the difference until you had them on the field beside a regular model.  On their own they all looked like regular marines.

While it is possible that GW might resize all spacemarines to primarise size, it does not look like it is GW intension to do so at the moment.

Old Metal termies or old Metal wraithguard vs plastics versions got a size increase, but they are the same unit.

Additionally they would either have to kill off this new unit type or increase the size of them as well.

? Only Brets/TK went, everything else exists both in background and in-game with published rules and available models.

I keep seeing this talk of phasing out the marine models. While it may be a very long term plan, I don't see it as very likely. Mainly for business/investment reasons. Investing in plastic kits is expensive, and GW like to get as much out of each one as possible. The current Tactical, Assault and Devastator kits are at most, 2 years old. It makes no sense to phase them out or replace them. They have too much potential profit tied into them, especially as some of the best-selling models GW produce.

Primaris marines are an additional unit, that is all. They'll get some cool new toys for sure, but there's no need for them to replace the current line.

What I meant was that the older type marines would end up like the empire or the regular old dwarves.  They're still in the game with rules and the models are still available, but they'll probably never be front and centre again.

I agree with you Lorizael. The cost of the molds and all that is astronomical. Not to mention all the new minis like the new Rubrics, the new Occult Terminators and presumably the new Death Guard are all be tactical scale. Also from a gaming stand point the new Marines are pretty beast. Unless GW want Marines to be a smaller, high points ultra elite army I don't think they'll phase out the classic tacticals.

However, I am glad my very first Marine army is modeled up to go back and forth between 30k and 40k! lol I'll be stylin' in all seasons 8)

I assume that if they had wanted to phase the old ones out out, they would just have introduced the new ones as "the new space marine models", and not as an distinct type with an in-universe explanation.

Posting here since this is a Development of the same topic. Basically, Spikybits got two articles pointing out GW dont use regular foot marines in images anymore, and seem to phase them out. Spikeybits seem to wonder if GW actually could do something like writing them totally off and out of the universe.

GW would be nuts to write them out of the universe, more likely they will continue to make normal marines a poor option for the game. Maybe in another 20 years when Primaris have flooded the market, they'll revamp the old marines, to spur on a new sales drive.

It is interesting to see how space marines are changing, previously the different chapters took infantry that was generally good at everything (had a wide range of wargear options) and gave them bonuses to a particular combat style. Now they are being built alot like Eldar, where you have specialist units with very limited wargear.

Which, if you go by the fluff, is how the Legions were organized during the Crusade.  Squads would be based around a single tactical option, and it would be applied with lethal efficiency.  They also had the man power to do so.  100,000 Astartes vs 1,000 gives you the bodies to have that doctrine.
If there is anything that recent politics has taught us, it is that quotes taken out of context can mean what ever you want them to.

The more specific marine units are ok for now (devistators, chapter specific units like death company etc.). I've always held the belief that tactical marines would easily be fixed by giving them more weapon options such as one special and one heavy weapon per fove models instead of ten. This would allow them to be much more tactically viable for me and that's not even getting into a discussion about how they should maybe be a point or two cheaper. This would still make them cheaper than Primaris and give them more flexibility in the extra weapons they can take.

I think perhaps more telling than GW no longer showing the regular old marines in promotional images is the fact that they haven't made any new kits/refreshed old kids for the regular marines in years.

The most recent mini-marine models made for regular retail channels to my memory were the Deathwatch Veterans (which came out ~2 years ago or more, and are a marginally larger scale than the old Tactical Marines).  Armageddon or Kill Team both could have been opportunities to come out with new models, but they got either the old Scout models (which are really starting to show their age) or Reivers.

For non-standard retail, there were the formerly-Japan-exclusive Space Marine Heroes.  But those feel more like a novelty/collector's item than an actual made-for-gaming release.

Eventually those old Scout, Terminator, Devastator, and Tactical Marine molds are going to wear out. When that happens -- in several years still, but eventually -- I doubt we'll see them replaced.  Classic marines will either be a novelty for old gamers (much like metal models are now).  Rules-wise, they'll probably stick around for the lifetime of the molds, but after that I can see some bit of fluff saying that the last of the Space Marines has finally crossed the Rubicon Primaris, and the old Marines will be written out of the rulebooks completely.

In the nearer-term, as the number of Primaris kits increases, less and less shelf space is likely going to be dedicated to the old kits. Command Squad, Devastator Squad, Vanguard & Sternguard Squads, and the like will probably move out of regular stock and into Online Only status.  It's just a question of physical space in stores; you need more room for new stuff, and if that new stuff effectively supplants old stuff, the old stuff is what gets moved.
