Foot Guard - 2k actually fielding a company sized army.
« on: August 3, 2017, 12:50:13 PM »
I normally play mech guard and people in my gaming area know me for playing mech guard. Over the years I am now sitting on well over 400 guardsmen and normally once or twice a year I drop the company on a player.

--- Battle plan ---

I figure this will be a very aggressive list running in 3 waves.

1st wave: 100 Conscripts
2nd wave: ~60 Line infantry
3rd wave: ~30 Veterans

As the waves get hit in close combat I will have the survivors immediately fall back behind the following wave and rapid fire their targets. The following wave will either rapid fire the same targets and possibly lock them in close combat.

The veterans hand out with the earthshaker platforms for a bit to both protect them and allow them to space out enough for a 3rd line.

The kinda oddball one would be the 8 sentinels. The previous edition I would just move them around as a relentless heavy weapon. This edition I'm thinking the same 3 wave tactic wave 1-2 are the h flamers while the multilaser/chainsaw squad runs clean up duty. These originally would be in the rear with the gear a bit spread out. I'm thinking about using them as a spear head on the flank of the conscript line using the scout move to have them settle on an objective.

If you haven't seen the points for the FW entries, the platform is almost too cheap not to take.

--- Weaknesses ---
I think my main weakness is only having 3 commissars, I ran out of slots for the brigade.

If the characters go my line goes, I will have to be careful about positioning.

Defiantly going second.

--- Strengths ---
200+ men of the empire.
11 lascannon equivalents
12 heavy bolters
Huge amount of firepower.

I don't have much experience playing against this type of list, and never played imperial guard. Honestly, for my regular shooty list with hight strengh but low number of shot this would be a terrifying list. I would probably get swarmed in not time.

BUT against really shooty specialist tau, or average but quite durable unit, shooty space marine, this might be an even match. Your worse matchup in my head would probably an elite cc army type, Blood Angels style. If they get in cc, with the death compagny or dreadknough... Man you can prey. They will mow you down like weed. BUT you can as stated retreate fire with the second wave charge again, that might Just work out somehow. May be. I'm really intrested In the game you will be playing with this list. Could you batrep it?

Also doyou have the same feelingnas me or not at all and I'm assumi'g wrong.

I have played a few games in 8th vs swarm-guard - and damn but they are good.

Even vs elite CC units, there are just so many bodies it's insane. Last list was vs 100 conscripts, and I managed to kill 85 of them using my harlies. And that was after assassinating the commissar.

One thought, would be for you to run two detachments, your brigade one and then an elite one, which would let you bring a total of 9 potential elite slots. You could probably do so with minimal changes to your current list
So, what your saying is it's not your fault you look stupid by using words you don't get?
Flawless logic.

Not crazy about Earthshaker cannons, myself. Though I'm not sure how much cheaper they are on their own when compared with a Basilisk. How much cheaper are they without the ride? What do you give up in durability?

I like the *idea* of a Basilisk, but I hate paying Hellhound prices for a gun that misses as often as it hits.

@Grizzlykin The conscripts from playing in the last edition have been the meatsheild. They don't really do much damage but have a scary potential if not dealt with. The allows my better infantry to do the work. And if some how... some how I can get 50 conscripts in rapid fire range 200 dice would just be funny. I would probably use the GW die app for it, for sanity's sake. If the first wave is alive by the time wave 3 gets into combat I would be a happy man. Commonly playing guard even with a win clean up is fast because most if it is already back in the box.

Against dedicated CC armies I'm hoping I can direct what they charge so I can minimize my looses to what I would consider chaff. Sentinel "platoon" and the conscripts.

@faitherun Your right I have been toying with keeping a brigade and the elite detachment gives me +1 CP and if I drop ~10 conscripts I can plop in another commissar I can do that also if I drop the m-laser sentinels to a squad of 2. If I have my opponents realize how to cripple my forces I'll end up doing this. Loss of the commissars does terrify me, I have managed to kill off plenty of squads so far by not killing them off but knowing I have reached that "critical mass" kill count that they will fall off the board unless they use CP.

@Wyddr
The FW platform is about 30 points cheaper. Basically I'm getting my 3 commissars by switching to platforms. The main downside I see from the platform is once they get into close combat the enemy auto hits but they are never locked in combat so I can still shoot them off.

-------------------
I added a detachment to let me have 5 commissars and +1 cp. I converted 1 scout flamer squad to an armored lascannon team and dispersed the lascannons through out the HWTs. This gives me a few arbitrary wounds before I get to las cannons and I can send to more out to the flanks. With all units split firing this shouldn't really effect the weapons' potential.

Now with 3 units of 35 conscripts I actually have 5 more and now if it goes really badly I can only loose up to 35 of them at a time. I am not hugely worried about drops, I have a TONE of them so I might make the sentinels all units of 1 so they can't get ripped apart by massed volume shots.

Armored Sentinels really don't add that much over Scout Sentinels and the Sentinel scout move is more useful than the +1 save. I'd make all the chicken walkers into the scout variety.

True about the armored sent, you get a 3+ opposed to 4+ but that is a decent amount of points to have a potential 6+ save.

Here is just the fast attack changes.
+ Fast Attack +
2x Scout Sentinels: 2x Lascannon
1x Scout Sentinels: 2x Multi-Laser, 2x Chainsaw

The more I have been looking at it the H flamer on the sentinel isn't that great, your paying a premium for a weapon that doesn't use BS and the sentinel doesn't have degrading BS H flamers get much better usage out of our Russ and Chimera hulls. I also hopefully don't want to get that close to the enemy with them. On another group they I asked what would be the weaknesses of this list and they said they would go for the anti tank, the more I spread out the lascannons the better.

Yeah, spreading out the AT is pretty important in HWS. The good thing is that you can use your deployment advantage ("What? Done so soon? Well, I guess the rest of my army gets to pick exactly how best to counter you now!") to put the Lascannons in spots that make enemy long-range fire hard to access.

Depending on opponent, of course.

With 31 drops I'm sure I'm going second.... every time.  ;D

That's deceptively useful, methinks. You can spend the first ten placing disposable units and then place your good stuff wherever. You also don't need to worry about anybody dropping from the sky to rapid fire your HWS, since there is basically nowhere in your backfield that's more than 9" from your own guys.

I like my Guard lists to be boots on the ground.

I have a triple Battalion list that starts at just under 1200points.

All told, 50 Conscripts, 8 Infantry squads, Commanders, Commissars, Sniper teams, flamer teams, a couple of Heavy Weapons squads.

Taking it up to 2000points, is a real hoot.

I don't consider it a real IG army if there's space in the deployment zone.

Then you will be happy to know it does fill the deployment zone up nicely. It managed to get a win by the my halfway through shooting turn 2 via the other player ceding the game.

Part of me wants to tone it down, another part of me wants to drop one conscript squad, a commissar and the 2 m laser sentinels to put in 20 scions with quad plasma in each squad.
