So the rules are up, models on preorder, and my mine is racing with possibilities.  Lets leave the arguments about the models look alone for now (i like it, i can see what they were intending with it, but i get alot of people hate it)  And lets focus on tactics.

How would you use it in an army? what sorts of armies do you think its most suited to?  Could this be a replacement of landspeeders? similar to what we saw with the hornet/viper issue with eldar?

Im personally looking forward to trying 2 of these out in my white scars army, A faster support unit to keep up with my bikes could be invaluable, with the addition that armor rule (melta weps get no extra d6) and the fast skimmer status, they could become a very useful unit.

What about you? how do you see them fitting into codex: space marine?  what role do you see them falling into? how would you use them?

The best comparison is the Typhoon, which is a lot cheaper (the Stormtalon's heavy bolter should be switched both for the look and for the rules) and better off at range where it can hide in ways the Stormtalon cannot (flying stand) and still shoot quite a bit. So that leaves the Stomtalon at a closer range and in a much more mobile position, particularly due to Aerial Assault and Supersonic. I wouldn't count on getting to use Hover Strike that often but it is nice. It is a bit risky since the price difference for two Typhoons and a Stormtalon is just a power fist away but I'm sure some will like the sturdier frame and punchier outfit.

To me the Skyhammer looks best since it fits well with the assault cannon and should be useful for hunting light vehicles and some infantry, basically making it a quicker but more vulnerable rifle-dreadnought. I wouldn't count too much on the ceramite plating, I see it more as being there for fluff reasons and consistency (protection during atmospheric re-entry) but of little actual help. I'm a bit sad it isn't Elites instead of Fast Attack, Elites lacks a good option for the faster types of Space Marine armies and this would have been a nice fit.

Anyone else noticed the odd formulation of Hover Strike that strongly hints at 6th edition's inclusion of type flyer? Hopefully these rules will contain a bit more so that they simply aren't faster skimmers but actually has to move about a bit instead of instant hovering.

I am liking the fact that with the escort craft rule... i can escort an outflanking unit and come in from outflank without having to roll for the storm talon..... could be very dangerous

Meh, the Stormtalon has speed enough to be unpleasant without having to outflank. You might as well just use the supersonic the first turn if you want to attack the backfield of the opponent. Also, given the lack of Space Marine units that are solid in the outflank position it would most likely be something that you do more for the Stormtalon than the unit in question (unless you play KHAAAN! which is a different situation) which basically means that you heap more points unto the poor thing.

For my thoughts, ive got a 1250 tourny coming up, and if i take my white scars, im running a Khan list, going super fast and trying to outflank everything means this unit would be very hand, especially if i have 2 of them and support 2 different units..... but yeah, the supersonic rule is a good one for games i choose not to outflank for, im going to have to test these guys out in a few games and see how well/bad they run depending on situations etc.

I have to agree with Draken what caught my eye right at first from a tactical stand point was the escort function. Let me explain my logic.

There is on thing in the whole of C:SM that can improve/change your odds for rolling your units in from reserve (Tigarius) and he runs 200 pts and doesn't even get termie armor or an invuln (mainly cause Ward is a tool but that's my personal opinion and a rant for another day). So using this to support a good outflanking squad. Your garunteed to drop in twice the fire power! Not something to be overlooked.

However using escort you can get a 2 for 1 so to speak on rolling your units in from reserve. As to Draken's point on outflanking that would work well with a Khan army since you have a whole army of out flankers. If your not running Khan the trouble is the best outflankers in the codex are already in the fast slot (squad of scouts in a LSS) so it creates some competition for that slot. Similar to the Eldar in that everything anyone wants to really use is either Elite or Heavy.

So I also agree it would have been nicer as an elite slot but again its trading one head ache for the other. The elite slot is already jam packed with good units.

The other thing I found odd and and I posted this in my thread is the lack of weapons options. Particularly the lack of a MM weapon mount option it can seriously hinder its role as an anti-armor gunship. I know in the description they say light armor but really short of  SM/SW speeder happy lists, Dark Eldar, and Orks nobody else really uses light armor. However I can really see this thing being the bane of existence for orks in trucks and dark eldar with enough ranged fire power to pop all the tin cans and stay out of range.

Not sure what to think. It is for sure balanced I don't see this making any army "unbeatable" just by virtue of having them. The weapons options, lighter armor (11 but melta proof just means you get str 8/9 shots gunning for you), exposed position (flying base), volume of fire, and special rules make it unique. It's worth trying out and seeing how it will fit in an army.

I plan to try running one with a land speeder storm. I See the mix of speed and firepower being a boon for a five man scout squad. They seem awfully fragile and the hover rule and ceramite plating don't add much to the vehicle. If I can mitigate the shots going towards it with other high risk targets I can see it being extremely helpful. Using supersonic to contest on the final turn is going to be a nasty trick. I also like the fact that it's a fast attack choice.
